Horrible service. They are trying to overcharge $7000 on my property taxes on the house that was in my wife's name when she died. They won't contact the Travis County Appraisal Office (which is even worse) to fix their mistake. Two people at the Tax Office gave me incorrect information about my exemptions for homestead, over 65, and surviving spouse. I have submitted all o f the correct paperwork. If I overpay $7000 they have no idea when I will get it back. If you have issues with property taxes, be ready. This Tax Office and the Appraisal District will give you nothing but apathy and point their fingers at each other. I am not at all anti-government, but these people could change my mind. I have now gone in twice to do a gift transfer of a vehicle title, and it STILL hasn't happened because I've been told something different every single time. Plus this is the 2nd time it's taken more than one visit to get a title tansferred for me. A few years ago, I had another gift title transfer to do and was erroneously told to do the exact opposite of what I was supposed to do in order to not pay taxes on a truck my parents had gifted to one of my sons. That took 2 visits to complete so, when they decided to gift another car to another one of my sons, we obviously filled the title title in on the back the incorrect way I was instructed to do the last time only to find out that it was, indeed, the wrong way, and I was told the correct way at that time. So I had to have my parents get a gift affidavit notarized and send it back to me. When I returned this morning to complete the process, I was told that I'd need a duplicate title that didn't have anything filled in on the back in order to do it as a gift - which the last clerk NEVER mentioned to me or I would have already gotten it. So now I have to have my 80 year old mother dealt with the DMV 5 states away before I can make ANOTHER appointment in order to finally get the title transferred. While I don't have any complaints of rude clerks, the ignorance and repeated incompetence on their part has caused me a great deal of needless work and lost time so., yeah, one star for that... read more

I came In this morning to do a title transfer on a BOAT trailer. I had the title signed from the SELLER as well as the 130 form. All legit stuff. Me being new to titles accidentally signed my name in a dealer blank on the back of the title... the man at the window told me that was unacceptable and could not be processed. And that the only way to ever get the title was to have an agency bond it. So thanks for being a huge pain in the rear over my own name written in the wrong spot. When the seller clearly signed and dated the forms stating me as the buyer. I then scribbled out my name, went across town and they told me that it would have been completely acceptable if I didn't scribble out my name and that people accidentally sign there often. I didn't open my vehicle registration envelope until I was walking in the doors to the HEB. Of course, that's when I read the three dreaded words that strike fear into the hearts of all vehicle owners: "*** NEW PLATES REQUIRED ***". I guess that's the disadvantage of keeping a vehicle too long. So, the next morning I called in late to work, and made darn sure I was here at the stroke of 8:00 (7:59, to be exact). I looked for the crowd on the second floor. Not to be found. One cashier window open. Amazing. To make a long story short, I was in and out in 7 minutes flat. The only reason it took that long is that the cashier had to count through her till before she could help me. Beats the hell out of the years I spent waiting in the old downtown office on Lavaca, where you often couldn't tell by the audience if you were at the tax office, in municipal court or at the deportation center. read more

There's a scene in a movie where the guy is trying to catch a flight to be with his girl and the flight attendant won't let him proceed until other passengers are called upon. Problem is there are no other passengers in front of him but he must wait anyway..........yeah, I saw that today at this tax office when no one came up when their number was called and only ONE guy was standing there. I was snickering like a 12 year old in church. They made him wait and wait and wait. All in all I was in and out in no time and on my way back to the office. New resident of Texas going through the process of registering our cars. With TX insurance cards and vehicle inspection paperwork in hand we headed to the Travis County Tax Office off Rt 71 for our new plates and windshield sticker. They are located on the second floor of building B, which is behind and to the left of Building A. No one was in line when we arrived so we were in and out in about 15 minutes at 10 AM on a Friday morning. Fantastic! Staff is helpful and efficient and make the process quite painless. So if you are new to the area and need to register your car(s) I would highly recommend this one. We checked out this link for information before we arrived: http://www.traviscountytax.org/goVehiclesRegistration.do (Scroll down to New To Texas) And we downloaded the 2 forms and filled them out beforehand. If you aren't sure about what to fill in, leave it blank and they will help you at the Tax office. Expect to pay $187.50 per car. If you have an out of state title for the car you can have them re-issue it in the State of Texas by surrendering it and having the new one mailed to you. The only advantage is if you should lose the title and you go to sell the car, you will need to contact the state where it was originally issued to get a duplicate before you can legally transfer ownership. If they re-issue at time of registration, you can get another one from these nice people if you lose it. (You still get charged a filing fee either way. AND you can sell a car in Texas with an out of state title as long as you physically have it to sign over to new owner. So it's just a matter of what you are comfortable with - I opted to re-issue to hopefully avoid any hassles down the road.) read more

I stopped in this week to renew my car registration and waited about 25% of the time that I usually had to at the other location. So these Jokers won't answer their phones, offices closed to BS Virus, so first time ever I sent in by postal mail a money order and registration. I had finally spoken to a clerk by phone after waiting an hour on hold and she told me what to send in along with a money order, so i did. I get everything back by mail 3 weeks later, saying i need to add a "transfer fee" of $2.50, no mention of this by the genius clerk. They could not bother to call me by phone to correct this, no that would be too easy. So, story short, have send it again by mail and add their ahole fee and wait another 3 weeks! I remembered to bring insurance. It was service with a smile. It only took about 5 minutes. Actually, it was so fast that i asked the clerk, are we done already? I waited about 20 seconds when i got there for my turn. And the icing on the cake is that there is a really nice view of hills from it's second floor location. I've never been to the main location but I am guessing this satellite office is much more stress free. read more

My mother had moved to Poland, given me a Power of Attorney, signed and dated the title and said- Here you go.... Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday! I was dreading getting all the paperwork done and dreading sitting for hours, waiting in lines, etc.. I had always had to go to another location- then today I searched and found the Hwy 71 location. To my delight, I got there, there was only 3 people ahead of me and then Vicky called my number. Lucky Me! She helped get all the forms, everything complete, and I got my new plates! If, like me, you lose or never receive your vehicle registration sticker, don't pay the $6 fee + $3 credit card fee to order a new one by phone from the main office! If you live out west just stop by here and they'll print you off a new sticker for free. read more
