Security there is very racist and assumed I spoke Spanish and also was fighting with me about not having an appointment and I told him that that doesn't show up on my phone and he got mad at me and so I let him keep talking so I got a ticket and waiting my turn the lady at the front said I needed an appointment but I told her it didn't work and they insisted so I left I have proof I've gone 5 times in two years trying to figure out this and the same people can't even help even when showing them proof why work there as a security and front desk lady if you don't help anyways get a new job then. I'll be back tmr to see if I can get a manager or someone with importance to help cause I've gone 3 times this year and it's the same situation every time and it's exhausting I can't do nothing in America without a social security and they make it hard for us. If you wish to see a reflection of the US, stop by a SS office. All sorts of people, attitudes and vibes. Since I needed to provide verification of date of birth to start Medicare, a trip to the office was required. Fortunately, there is a location just 2 miles from us in SW Austin. The facility is large, clean and institutional. Wouldn't expect anything different. The waiting area is large, with lot's of seats. There were clean restrooms and water dispensers. You cannot bring in food/drink, no biggie. Once we arrived, I expected a decent wait time, so brought the spousey to join me and we just enjoyed each other during the wait. When we entered, not really knowing next steps, I went to ask the gentlemen in a uniform for direction behind a counter. I barely got out, Good Afternoon, I was.... well cutoff.. and told, check in at the kiosk as he pointed to the thingy to my left and went back to what was more important than helping me. Look, I feel for these folks who have these jobs. I'm sure they work with a great deal of angst from folks, not getting what they think they deserve from the system and may be the target of their discontent. However, it would be nice if he would of let me finish my statement, perhaps a smile, but not today. Hit up the kiosk, checked in, got a ticket and we sat and watched the monitor for when it was our time. As you are informed, your wait my be longer or shorter then others already in the room. Depends what you are there for. My number was called and we were greeted by a smiling agent, who took it from there. He eliminated my fears that I may have been a little late to apply, took my identification, including my Dutch birth certificate, passport and TDL to make copies. Came back, let me know I was all set and would be receiving stuff in the mail. Polite, efficient and pleasant interaction. I believe we may have been waiting 25mins. It was pretty quick IMO. We headed out and I made a point to walk out by the counter, smiled really big at the same gentlemen and thanked the dude and wished him a good afternoon. I came in everything was ok and seemed good then I saw my ticket number some up on the board so I got up and went to the window it said and she said I didn't call a number. So I asked so I don't come until You call the number? And I was going to sit back down and then a guy at the next window said oh you are assigned to window 13. Don't know how long it will be. They have served 6 people after my number. Plus the other people have come in and left. There is no way for me to verify if my number will ever be called because they passed me up. Although I already filled out forms online and had a confirmation number, we were still required to fill out a paper copy for SSN application (for my kiddo) on the spot. Thankfully it's only one page and I got it done in less than 3 minutes. The guard was serious but helpful, he's doing his job right and perfectly. No mask no entry. No food or drink allowed. I think that's pretty simple. We originally went up to the location on La Posada and it looked like we'd be there for days. We asked the security guard his thoughts and he said the south location had a shorter wait and more capacity but the guard was a jerk. He was right about all the things. It definitely had fewer people and was a bigger office (although it seemed few windows were open). The security guard made me take my water out to the car because no drinks were allowed even though I didn't see any signs saying that. If you're in the place for a couple hours, don't you need to keep hydrated? You have a constant 30 to 50 people sitting around in chairs waiting to be served with just one or two windows open out of a possible 20 ,as usual with government services. It's slow , disorganized and they're unprepared to help you, they just take information. This is another government agency Trump needs to shut down or revamp. Be prepared before you go. You have to wait outside, with no shade, for quite a while, before going inside to get a number and wait to be served. I was outside for an hour. Wear sunscreen, hat, bring an umbrella, something to sit on if you can't stand for long periods of time, and a bottle of water. In total I was there about 2.5 hours, and that was with 12 people in line ahead of me. I expected to wait but waiting in the heat/sun was rough. Make an appointment if you can, I wasn't able to make an appointment for what I was doing. Once inside there is A/C and waiting is fine. He then proceeded to come to my chair and act as if I'm a criminal for having a water. His customer service skills are nonexistent. SSA is hidden behind another building off Industrial. GPS makes it easy to find. There's plenty of parking. Your best bet is to make an appointment in advance through their website. If you don't you'll have to wait. On the day I went my wait was 1.25 hrs. If you don't make an appt the line moves faster if you arrive at 8:45am. You're assigned a letter and a number when you arrive. The staff are all specialists and you can't tell how long the wait will be to see the specialist you need. Might as well take your phone and earbuds for entertainment. Don't plan on making any noise, no talking on your phone, and don't bring in any beverages, including bottled water. You should also find out in advance what forms and documentation you'll need. Fill out forms at home to save time once you're there. Good luck! read more

I have been to one in Dallas before and it sucked. When I pulled into the office building from 290 I followed the signs around to the back and it was easy to find. I walked in to see maybe 8 other people. Literally in 5-10 minutes it was my turn. The agent I had that helped me was super nice and knew what he was doing. I was with him maybe 5 minutes. Grr. This is my 3rd time here within 7 days. Mission: replacement social security card for my son (minor). Prep: checked online what was needed; also called and spoke with someone to ensure I had everything, so I didn't have to take my kid out of school. Visit #1: 1 hr+45 min wait (11am arrival on a Friday). Declined, bc his school ID didn't include his birthdate. (FYI, birth certificate means nothing, unless there's an error with the name on the initial card issued). SSA person said, "If you have a health insurance card with his name on it, bring it next time and you'll be fine. And, show up at 9am Monday: there's an expedited line for replacement cards." Visit #2: Arrived at 9:08am (late, bc my son had taken his photo ID out to attend a football game - realized en route, so later than expected arrival). TOO LATE: the expedited window had closed, and I had to take a number and wait. Monday AM wait was about 30 minutes. At the window: "I'm sorry you were misinformed - this health insurance card doesn't have his birthdate on it, so it's not valid." Remaining options: get a certified school record with an administrator's signature AND bring everything else (school ID, application, my ID), OR, bring HIM (take him out of school). Visit #3: Thursday just after 1pm with my son. About a 45-minute wait. David was our teller (SO pleasant!). Thank you, David! FINALLY got it done! (Expect 1-3 wks for the card to arrive in the mail, but he said it can come as quickly as 5 business days). read more

The customer service has definitely gone down since the COVID-19 pandemic. You can't go in the office (which is weird considering you can go into the dmv & public aid office). I can't speak for all of agents however, the lady I spoke to today refused to give me the supervisors number after she was being rude for no reason. I didn't get my questions answered and now I am calling back and all of a sudden, no one is available to answer the phones. "If you don't like your job go apply somewhere else." What if I was someone with a disability or needed a different type of assistance?! If this is how you would treat an able- bodied person I truly feel for those who aren't able-bodied. Nevertheless, whether you are able-bodied or not you don't treat people like that. No one ever "wants" or "loves" going to the office of a public or government service. Sometimes it is a necessary nuisance. There is never a good time to carve out what may take hours of "hurry up and wait" for a 5 minute transaction. I need a new Drivers License. This time, I wasn't on the easy mail in a check and renew path. The letter said I had to go in person, take a new photo, etc. They need a current ID AND a Social Security Card. (sigh) After looking in the important documents file in the safe and finding EVERYTHING except my SS Card, and spending more time that I wanted looking for it, I decided it was time to bite the bullet and just go get a new one. I Googled Social Security, easily found a form, and then found I had to deliver it, IN PERSON, with proof of ID. (sigh) I was pleasantly surprised to see there was a new office (since April 2012) less than 5 minutes from my home in SW Austin. Hoping and praying that this would not take all afternoon, I parked, walked inside to find a computer that we sign in on. I was given the number A34. Looking around, I estimated there were approximately 15 people ahead of me and all the windows were filled. Much to my surprise, there were more windows down the hall. There was a flat screen "Social Security TV" with closed captioned commercials for all your Social Security needs including some dialogue with Mr. Sulu from Star Trek. It flashed on the bottom of the screen what numbers were currently being served. I noticed there were 3 sets of numbers (starting with A, B and X) that were based on the needs of the people waiting. 20 minutes later, my number was called and I was quickly helped and on my way in less than 5 minutes from being called. I was told the card will arrive in about 3-5 days (even though the website indicates 2 weeks). The service was friendly and efficient. The woman that helped me indicated that this office is just starting to pick up a steady flow of traffic. She advised to avoid Mondays and the first of the month, as that is when they are the most crowded. I also learned that we should not laminate our SS Cards, as that renders them invalid. Interesting - as prior to misplacing mine, it was also laminated. (oh well) So while no one looks forward to the operational element of our government at work, especially when it involves our filling out a form and waiting, I found the Social Security Administration experience to be A-OK. read more

I was a little afraid of coming here after reading the awful reviews of the north location, but I have to say it was an incredibly nice and quick experience. Recently I changed my name due to tying the knot, and I got here at 8:50am. There were already eight people in front of me! Once the door opened at 9am, the employees very efficiently gave us numbers and queues to go to. I saw someone immediately, and was out of there by 9:10am. This is one of the best experiences I've had at a government agency! I went on a Thursday around 10am, and was the only person in line. As others have mentioned, the security guard is super helpful and pointed me to the sign in computer. I was there for a name change and was in and out in record time...maybe 10 minutes at the most. Warning to anyone on SSI: There is a lot of incompetence and outright dirty tricks they pull even if the benefits are for your disabled child. Trying to call and get a human voice is near impossible and when you finally get someone after holding over an hour, they pick up long enough to hang up on you. No matter what I report every month, somehow they don't have the right amounts and determine there was a ridiculously high overpayment that you owe. Appeals are almost useless; they reduced some of it but there should not be any owed. Every year it is the same thing, no matter what I do. People there are not logging info correctly no matter how much I stay on top of this. Incompetence or corruption suspected here. As for retirement, I don't know but we will see. read more

My disabled son's benefits were suspended because they wanted him to come in and sign a form. No notice by mail just suspended his benefits. I pay for his utilities since he can't afford it. As a result, they lowered the amount of benefits he receives. He now cannot afford his apartment. He was to attend a educational program, having waited 2 years to attend. Couldn't go to doctor for a Metro Access form to be filled out because with suspending his benefits, Texas took away his Medicaid. So when he was able to attend the educational program, he couldn't go because of no transportation available. He is now moving out of Austin, can't afford to live in Austin. I will now be paying more for him to live and trying to find another program to provide education and job training for him. He was born with his disability but Social Security treats him horribly. His goal is to become dependent on himself one day but Social Security and Medicaid continues to prevent it for him. Sorry I am not rich to pay for him to obtain his goal privately. I already work two jobs to help him. They should pay us to move to another country since many help the disabled more than this country. read more
