Love Love Love Treats. I am there at least once a week, if I have any money/time, I stop when I drive by. The owners really focus on good interesting offerings, things you can't really make at home. Sandwiches are amazing, the coffee is top notch and local, and you can even buy some there to take home. My daughter makes us take her every saturday morning for the little jar candies, like an old fashoned 5 and 10. Great people work there...So welcoming and warm and friendly. And the atmosphere is exposed brick, old wide plank wood floors...tin ceiling and scatterd antique counters .....But , best of all the food is very high quality, organic farm fresh, beauttiful looking......and beyond delicious. The very Best soups I have ever had. Rustic artisinal breads....Baked goods spilling of fresh fruits....( fabulous offerings of glutin free, vegan treats to die for!!!!) A great place for interesting items. Cheese salami and artisans bread for a quick picnic or lunch down by the water.soups and salad. Not your regular cheeses. This is more of a boutique bakery and gourmet food shop than overpriced tourist trap. I stopped by for some coffee and ended up getting a small loaf of lemon pound cake which was excellent. They also have sandwiches and salads that are pre-made for sale, although I didn't try these. The coffee is specialty (like I would suspect) and rich tasting the way I like it. I just wish they sold the whole beans. There is wine and cheese to sell, but the selection is not extensive as I would expect. The staff are extremely knowledgeable about what they do have and this makes all the difference. They have lots of treats in old-time glass medicine jars, such as chocolates, gummi worms, and rock candy on a stick so kids would love this place. I wouldn't be surprised if in high summer they sold ice cream (although I didn't see any). There also is the requisite tourist gifts/souvenir section all coastal boutiques have, however, none of these feature the word "Maine" on them and they are surprisingly affordable for the non-tourist. I would still go there for the food and not the gifts, though. read more

Yes, the scones alone are worth the trip. Blueberry and Maple Walnut scones are fantastic. The small communal seating table could be bigger. In the winter it is OK, but in the summer, not so much. When we travel up north to Maine for a summer retreat or even a weekend getaway, this little gourmet grocery store is one of our first stops to stock up on food and beverage supplies. I'll just say it up front: Treats loses a star only because of the random bad manners of certain staff. You can go into their shop 5 times over a single vacation and only be insulted once, but it stings all the more so because everyone else in the state is so dang friendly. I've witnessed the eye-roll, the major sigh, the piercing stare, the snap, the turned-back service, the snobbery, etc., but I still return because most of the folks there are helpful and knowledgeable about their great selection of wine and treats. Now, if you're going there to get a taste of old Maine, you might want to venture further down the street to Red's Eats for a lobster roll or back down Route 1 to the Sea Basket for some traditional fried seafood. Treats is more representative of the new Maine - that is, good quality, but overpriced, often healthy, always decadent fare. That said, def stop in AFTER your fried clams and whoopie pie! In recent years, the store has expanded and gobbled up the shop next door. This is a good thing. In this new addition, they offer all their sweets and savory items from gummy frogs and over-sized ginger cookies to vegetarian lasagna and mini-fruit pies to go. You can also pick up a few grocery items (many locally made) for pasta or pancake prep at home. In the original section of the store is where you find all the wine, beer and cheese, as well as a copy of the NY Times (or the Portland Press Herald... I mean, shouldn't you read THEIR big paper when visiting, you big snob?). If it's in stock, try the Phippsburg cheese from a nearby dairy farm. Otherwise, ask the counter person to sample a few cheeses you haven't ever heard of - they're all good. Same goes with the wine: typically, if you're not a pro, tell them what's for dinner and request a little tour of their selection (sorry, verbal only - no sampling). Last time, we got a fantastic Syrah and a Shiraz for under $20! Lastly, in the back lie a pile of empty cardboard six-pack cartons on the floor. The nearby cooler has a wall of single selections of good brew. Again, as with the cheese or wine, cherry-pick a few unknowns and a few favorites and make your own six-pack.
