KTA Express, you're a lifesaver!…read more I came to the KTA Express store twice in recent weeks, and this store/supermarket totally saved me from having to drive back in town (Kailua-Kona) to buy something I sorely needed. I was working at a local bank next door doing some lock work when I realized I needed a few 9-volt batteries to fix something. Being that I was traveling, and did not have access to all my normal gear, I asked the bank people where was the nearest store? Originally I was worried that I might have to drive all the way back to Kailua-Kona to get what I needed, but luckily KTA had a store in Kealakekua. Walked over to the KTA store, as it was just a hop, skip, & jump away from the local bank (where I was working). Got what I needed, and time & resources were saved that day! Last week Thursday I found myself back in Kealakekua working at a credit union this time. No, I didn't need anything in particular for the credit union this time, but after finishing the job at the credit union, the KTA store was very convenient for me to get some drinks & some grub. Apparently the KTA Express has a vendor - L&L Drive-In that does pre-made - ready to eat bentos. Some of the items looked pretty good, so I decided to give it a shot & picked up a mini BBQ Chicken & Noodle Bento. The mini bento was pretty tasty, and best part of it all is that I didn't have to go far to get my lunch grub. KTA Express in Kealakekua, you're a lifesaver! Lol!

Parking: They have a small parking lot. Very easy to find. Free parking. This was a large market. It had everything a grocery store provided, but products were a bit more expensive than usual. I walked around and noticed there were fresh fruits in their grocery section. They also had fun snacks in the freezer section. We found everything we needed to restock for the rest of our trip.

we saw the store sign as we drove by and decided to try it out…read more Found good prices for 1/2 pound Ono fish and a 1/2 pound ahi tuna fish; so far, the Ono fish was delicious. Good quality potatoes, fresh broccoli. Customer service: very good. Parking: easy Tip: take the scenic drive south from Kailua-Kona to Captain Cook area.

I phoned in a special order for a Yellow-fin Ahi block from the fish cutter himself. He reassured…read moreme that he would have it ready for me to pickup later in the day and that it would be readily retrievable by any of the available staff. He emphatically declared that it was not unusual for him to take an order over the phone. I should have realized that it was probably not going to happen when I had to give him my name before ending the call. In retrospect, I should have called him later in the day to see if it was done but it was the first time dealing with him so I was giving him the benefit of my doubts. Guess what? After making a special trip to the store, there was no order to be found anywhere. That was my protein for the next three days and what they had in the counter was not that appetizing and were much larger cuts of fish cuts and no guarantees that they were, in fact, yellow-fin tuna. He guaranteed that he was going to cut a specific weight for me of yellow-fin tuna caught fresh the previous day. I spent at least ten minutes on the phone with him having a very friendly conversation that sounded genuine. The staff offered no apologies or compensation of any sort for my ordeal almost insinuating that I was fabricating the whole situation.

A pleasant and comfortable camping experience on the Big Island…read more As a solo woman, I spent 9 nights in the Jungle Canopy at Gingerhill Farm Retreat in April 2026. I had an excellent stay, although I am used to camping, and feel that having a camping mindset is required for staying here. Yes, the chorus of frogs are very loud as soon as it's dark, and you can hear roosters in the distance in the morning along with bird songs. However, I enjoyed the noises and am an early riser. The Jungle Canopy is located close to the private residence, and I experienced little human noise. There was one nighttime rain and no leaks. The screened-in bedroom is functional, and the bed has a good (firm) mattress. The sink and toilet, screened off and behind the bed, are nice to have in this enlarged tent. The shower is a few feet outside the tented bedroom/kitchen, and is open to the sky (cool to look up at the tree canopy). The shower is very nice, and the water gets hot. There is no door, but the only way you can be seen is from the Jungle Canopy tent itself (you can hang a sarong if you needed more privacy). They provide face clothes and towels, two worn beach towels, as well as family-size liquid hand soap, shampoo and conditioner (decent quality). The kitchen, in front of the screened bedroom, also under a canopy, has everything you need: pots and pans (including a few that are stainless steel), a good size fridge with a small enclosed freezer (with 2 freezer packs), a sink with dish soap, etc. They provide a Berkey-like water filter carboy, a stainless-steel kettle to boil water, as well as coffee beans, a grinder, and French-press. There is a small table with two chairs where you can look at beautiful tropical plants. The only bummer is that the hot plate to cook food and boil the kettle can be slow to heat, especially if there is a slight breeze. Once the propane tank emptied while I was cooking breakfast and I had to text to ask for a replacement, however, someone came over right away and I was able to resume cooking. Like camping, you are responsible for taking out your own trash to communal cans located a fairly short distance away. You can't put any toilet paper down the toilet, so all paper used for #1 and #2 needs to go into a plastic-bag-lined trash can and you remove and dump. They removed the compost. Recommendations to Gingerhill: provide more plastic bags for trash, more toilet paper (I had to ask), and offer a larger compost bucket as it filled too quickly. Also, one day I came back in the afternoon and found the gate code didn't work. I texted and called and fairly soon someone told me that they changed the code, but didn't notify me. Next time they change the code they should text all visitors staying at the farm the new code. So, in all, I would give a 9/10 ranking, especially given the cost compared to other accommodations, and the tropical farm experience. FYI, there is snorkeling gear that you can use that is located next to the Sunset Cottage.

I understand mistakes can happen, but the way this property handled my situation was unacceptable…read more I reserved the Kukui Cabin, which was listed with two twin beds, an indoor flushing restroom, and an indoor shower. I provided documentation showing that I booked the Kukui Cabin. However, I was placed in a different accommodation with an outdoor composting toilet and an exposed outdoor shower. The property claimed I requested the Bamboo Cabin, but when I asked for documentation, they failed to provide any. They later denied my refund/dispute by calling the substituted room an "upgrade," even though I never requested or agreed to the change. I was also concerned about the lack of standard room security. Their website did not clearly disclose this, and their response was simply that it had been that way for over 30 years with no issues and that I should have read their reviews. I have filed a complaint with the Hawaii Office of Consumer Protection and am prepared to pursue appropriate legal remedies. I would not book here again unless you are comfortable paying premium lodging prices for what felt more like camping in the wilderness.
