We were seated in their expansive patio where we could hear the invigorating live music coming from the adjacent restaurant. We shared two dishes, both reasonably good. First up was the MX$220 Salad with Pistachio Dressing, which was basically a Caesar salad with hearts of romaine, parmesan, and roasted garlic croutons (Photo 9). The second dish was the MX$320 Swedish Meatballs, a surprisingly bland choice for us as it offered cardamom & dill gravy, sliced pickles, and garlic mashed potatoes (Photo 10). Neither blew our socks off, but they provided us the needed nourishment. Half of our group ordered the Juicy Lucy, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. We also shared the beet salad and the burrata with their house-made mole sauce, both of which stood out. The kitchen is open, so you can watch the team cook over a wood-fired stove, which adds to the overall experience. The staff was excellent, and everything felt thoughtfully done. The menu is truly farm-to-table. Even the pickles are made in-house. If you are looking for a great burger and a well-executed, casual dining experience in San Miguel de Allende, Bastardo is absolutely worth a visit.

Only a half-block from the social epicenter of Jardin Allende, it provides a nice view of the top of the parroquia from their rooftop terrace where we were seated (Photo 3). The restaurant definitely had a more refined ambiance than the previous four places. We could tell it was a popular spot among wealthy American expats because the ambient voices sounded more like Chicago than Mexico. No Spanish, just English. The cocktail was a tangy treat though, a Tamarind Margarita (Photo 8), and the Jicama Taco was a satisfying veggie ending to our evening (Photo 10). The only downfall which is not the restaurants fault was that we got visited by bees. The staff tried to do their best with them, but we also did not want to make the bees mad.
