    Fantastic restaurant in SMA! This place truly lives up to the buzz. The ambiance is impressive as soon as you step inside. We visited for lunch on a Saturday. Their guava cocktail was absolutely delicious. We ordered the edamame, beet salad, burger, and roasted chicken breast. The beet salad was excellent with its mix of textures and flavors, while the chicken was perfectly cooked. The burger was just okay. Service was a little slow, and the prices were on the higher side, but overall, it was a great experience.

    11/10 amazing ambiance. Absolutely beautiful restaurant, and very cool bar. Was a little disappointed that the menu was mostly burgers. The sea bass and scallops we saw online were not available, but they had at least 8 different burgers. We did order the pulpo, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower soup, and tuna dishes which were all very excellent. Actually, the cauliflower and lemongrass soup was incredible and one of the most unique and delicious cold soups I have ever had. Drinks were very sweet and kind of weak? I felt the cocktails could be way better. Overall, great and special little restaurant with something for everyone.

    Pasta Primavera

    This is a top notch restaurant with delicious food and ambiance to match. I was staying nearby and this place was recommended. I had the most delicious shrimp or corn chowder. It was really perfection. Then I had the pasta primavera. I've had that dish in many a restaurant but this was amazing. Beautiful as well as very tasty. I was honestly so full I didn't have dessert. I would've gone back except for the host of amazing restaurants to try here. This one is a must. A bit pricey for the area but worth it.

    The Restaurant, a highly touted fine dining-ish spot put a lot of mysterious smiles on my face: The first came when I stopped by to make reservations, as recommended, and found the place both open and empty. The night of my reservation I was one of only 3 parties in the place the entire time I was there. The second mysterious smile came shortly after I was seated. The waiter approached bearing an enormous wooden menu that he then propped up on the empty chair at my table. Try not chuckling over that image. The menu was all over the place but not in a bad way. Many items sounded good (and were) but they just didn't go together. You'll understand when I tell you my party of 2 ordered Vietnamese Spring Rolls as a shared starter then two entrees, "Chicken Curry" and "Pasta with Lemon & Prawns". I was going to share the delicate, exquisitely lemon pasta but one bite of the very good Indian curry told me that neither dish would benefit from being shared. The Restaurant had been described to me as a "splurge" but the prices were comically reasonable. That pasta which would easily run $30+USD at home was about $13US. There's some rumors that Anthony Bourdain either dined here and liked it or knew the chef and liked him or his food. I tried deep-diving and could find nothing to confirm either rumor but I think that story has brought the place a certain cachet. The Restaurant was a bit of an enigma but happily, one which served quite good entrees. I'd be happy to return.

    The best meal with the best service during our entire trip to SMA. The Restaurant was fantastic. Make reservations as they get busy! We were seated right away in the beautiful main dining room. The retractable roof gave us perfect levels of light throughout dinner. The decor is gorgeous! The service was great and we never felt rushed. Their servers are well trained. Food: Appetizers were amazing. My beet salad with goat cheese was WOW! Delicious! My husband had the cheese plate appetizer and it was huge and amazing. So many cheeses but his favorite part was the honey. Our main entrees were dream worthy. My salmon with Moroccan barbecue sauce on vegetable couscous was perfect. I absolutely recommend it. The pork chop with potatoes and swiss chard was perfectly prepared and the perfect mix of savory and a little sweet. We LOVE desserts but we were so satisfied with our meals we didn't require dessert. All of this for under $100 USD. Super happy with this place. We will recommend it to everyone we know who travel to SMA. Our favorite meal of the trip!

    The Restaurant was closed when we arrived for dinner at 6:30 pm on a Friday night. Very disappointed!

She went to this particular traditional restaurant known for their signature dish, Molcajete. The term first refers to a Mexican mortar bowl made of basalt volcanic rock standing on three stubby legs. The same term also refers to the food inside. It's quite simple because it's all about the ingredients and the execution. Jamie W and I ordered the MX$550 Mix Volcanic Bowl where they grilled large amounts of arrachera (skirt steak), chicken, and cecina (cured beef) while heating up the molcajete. The meat was then layered in the bowl along with nopales (cactus), green onion, chiles, peppers, and queso blanco cheese. A spicy green chile verde sauce was drizzled all over the gluttonous mix (Photo 7). Fresh guacamole and creamy refried beans were served on the side (Photo 4). A stack of freshly made tortillas was provided in order to gorge on all of the hearty indulgence which continues to stream well after its arrival at the table. The total amount could've easily served four ravenous people with both the arrachera and nopales the delectable standouts. Out of blissful ignorance, we both ordered salads as if the volcanic bowl wasn't going to satisfy us. Jamie had the MX$135 Mixed Salad with lettuce, grape tomatoes, cucumber slices, red onion, pasilla chiles, mushrooms, and a rosette of avocado slices (Photo 8). I went with the MX$200 House Salad with lettuce, hearts of palm, cubes of chihuahua cheese, green olives, grape tomatoes, and red onion (Photo 9). Both were more than freshly satisfying as we were filling up on housemade tortilla chips with red salsa and fresh pico de gallo (Photo 5). The space was cavernous with plenty of room for large parties as families converged on this place. We could totally envision live music performances in here, especially with a long, fully stocked bar beckoning. Although I've seen mocajetes on random Mexican menus around San Francisco, I agree with Pati that this type of place would be quite successful stateside. If you're planning a trip to San Miguel de Allende, I recommend following Pati's advice. This obscure place from outside, when you walk in becomes what appears to be a Hacienda along with a patio, Terraza and balconies all around and cantina where you walk in! Not only was this place beautiful in the most traditional of Mexican styles, with tiled and wrought iron stairs to upper balconies, built in shelves and niches withing stone, wallpapered and muralled walls, a typical bar inlaid with the structure with magnificent woodwork and an excellent bartender I might add, clay flower pots galore hanging from the balcony flooring, and an incredible full skylight, wall to wall, but that's not the best of it. The food. The food was magnificent. I have had many a meal in Mexico, I have tried many, many styles of regional cuisine, but I had never ever had the specialty of this house - the Enmolada! The unique specialty of the house at La Cocina Café del Viajero are Enmoladas which are a dish consisting of tortillas in mole sauce... stuffed with fillings of almost any inkling! Enmoladas are a established indigenous dish made with corn tortillas that is coated in mole sauce. This is what I had to have. First let me mention that the food here is incredible, overall. We obviously started with bottled water, a couple of okay Margaritas and some Modelos. As is the custom, we had the Guacamole, which was extraordinarily excellent, with homemade chips, really, really good chips. Someone at the table ordered the Enchilada Capital with Mexican rice - extraordinary and very picoso! To make a long story short, my order of the Enmolada was exquisite. Most folk like me, were only familiar with enchilada sauce, but Enmolada sauce is unique. The enchiladas are smothered in mole sauce, offering a exceptional merge of flavors that stretch from spicy and sweet to savory and smoky. Totally overwhelming the palate, as your tastebuds go in a freefall. They compacted shredded chicken, then rolled it, then garnished it with fresh toppings of crema and cheese. Wow! Needless to say, this was an experience! An exquisite location, excellent service, terrific atmosphere and one of the most life changing taste adventures I had in Mexico. Try an Enmolada, maybe here, it's terrific.

Staffed by three buddies who have all worked in high end restaurants (here in San Miguel as well as the US and Europe), this tiny establishment doesn't even have a sign outside (just take down the address and you'll see a sign that says "Hotel" by the door. Enter and ascend a flight of stairs and it'll be on your right. The meal begins with chips and a warm black bean dip (made with exotic ingredients they'd needed to pick up the previous day in something that sounded like a drug deal!). Next order the mushroom soup--a highlight of our 7 day trip to San Miguel. We also shared an order of guacamole (excellent as you'd expect, with thick chunky chips), and an order of Requeson (never heard of that, but turned out to be a cheese log with spicy/tangy flavor, served with hot corn tortillas). For mains, we had the torts de lingua (delicious if you're not weirded out by beef tongue), duck floutas, and the pork dish (Costilla en Abodo Oaxaqueno), which had excellent flavor but was a battle (large bone in the middle so difficult to eat). They've only been open for a few months and they have a few kinks to work out--the menu is not organized in a logical way (green salad and mushroom soup appear at the end rather than first). Meals did not all arrive together, but to be fair we were a large party (8), and ordered multiple items per person. They also need to update their Google entry, which failed to note that they're closed on Tuesdays. And as noted before, having a sign would be helpful. Remember to BYOB because they don't serve alcohol, but in the end that's yet another thing that makes this place an incredible bargain! We managed to eat VERY well for less than $16 per person. Just wish we'd discovered it sooner because we would've returned if we had time. Maybe for breakfast, which I hear is also fantastic.
