    Trestle patio

We tried here again as quite disappointed last time. While we enjoyed our stay, the service was great and the beer is always good, the food has tumbled this time again, despite the huge increase in prices. Ordered a Vegoner sandwich (almost $30 with tax and tip) and it oozed with grease, including the overdone fries. It certainly had no veggie taste nor feel. I felt bad after eating. While it's a great place in the summer with its nice big outdoor patio, I likely won't be returning until then, about six months from now!

The owner was quite busy running around, serving people, grabbing drinks from the bar, taking orders, cleaning tables & bringing out food. It would have been nice if he had a waitress to cover the customers who were seated instead of him trying to do everything. He would make us fish & chips with halibut even though it was not on the menu. The order included soup or salad so my husband got the house salad with dressing & I got the bacon potatoe soup. Both were a good size portion and I really enjoyed my soup! The orders came with 2 large crispy & very hot portions of halibut and fries. We probably could have shared an order but we didn't know how big they were. Excellent dinner and fixed our cravings for this. Was so hungry I slathered the tartar sauce on & was digging in so fast... so tasty & almost forgot to take photos. I will come back next time so try their Greek food...

Inside, one may order food and buy some knick knacks that are bohemian chic. There is also a clean washroom for one to use. I ordered a super bowl which was $17. The size was great, but I felt it lack some flavour and half the bowl was filled with quinoa. Not a big fan of it, I would have liked less quinoa. My partner had a veggie burger and he liked it. There was a spice kick to it. He wished it came with a side instead of paying additional for it. The following morning we returned to try their açai bowl for breakfast and it was delicious!! Frozen blueberries were provided instead of fresh berries. They could have used seasonal fruits. The crisp coconut pieces added a crunch to each bite. This dish, I would order again. They have a reward system if you sign up. Overall, a nice healthy place to stop by while one is up North enjoying some sports or a little get-away.

Unfortunately, the food didn't deliver. Between my friend and I, we had: Mushroom caps - too small to even actually be stuffed, so it was essentially just stuff on top of mushrooms. The stuff on top included shredded, chewy fake crab meat and what seemed like a pound of cheese. Very bad. Large Caesar salad - Very bland, aside from the fact that they dumped an entire container of Renee's dressing in it. Pickerel with vegetables and twice baked potato - The pickerel was a bit overcooked, but tasty. The vegetable was just 4 slices of zucchini fried in butter - simple, but not bad. And then the twice baked potato, which was essentially mashed potatoes smothered in cheese. No crispiness like twice baked potatoes usually are, and would have tasted better with some green onion and if it weren't so wet and mushy. The service was friendly and attentive. But that's not enough to make up for the crappy food.

Then there is the lunch buffet! Thin, flavourful fresh baked ravioli, fettuccine alfredo cooked to perfection, and penne in special red sauce with the perfect bit of spices. Italian meatballs, bruschetta mini burgers with cheese, bbq ribs, and excellent veal parmigiana in appropriately small, lunch- sized portions. All salads with six dressings, home style veggie soup, light battered fish and chips. Yes, it's "All you can eat" And, it's all good. Be careful. Wear your Magic- Stretch" pants. In summary, it is rare to partake of any buffet and find that nothing has been tortured under a heat lamp. This establishment creates the buffet choices in small increments so that everything is always fresh for everyone. Summer time And the dining is easy. And, by the way the price will make you smile. It is a very pretty restaurant, in a house setting, with outdoor patio seating. Our server was professional and attentive. The menu is extensive with a lot of interesting options. Prices are fair to the quality of the food. We ordered the Frito Misto and it was perfectly prepared: lightly batter, crispy, juicy and tasty. The arugula and fig salad was delicious and such a good combination of flavors. The eggplant Parmesan appetizer was so good: crispy yet juicy, and not greasy. The tomato sauce that came with it was different: fresh and crunchy. However the pièce de rèsistance was the wild boar: so tender and juicy, with a mild gamey flavor that came together with the light sweetness of the poached pear and of all the other ingredients that completed the supreme flavor. For dessert we ordered Panna Cotta: so well made and beautifully decorated. It is honestly one of the best meals from beginning to end that we have had in a long time. Can't wait to eat here again!!!!! SIDENOTE: the only thing that could improve is the bread.

While the prices are similar to a nice downtown Toronto restaurant, the quality of the food and, more importantly, the nuanced difference in taste that their new chef brings, make it worth it. My wife and I stayed at the Northridge Inn for a couple of days and went to Renard Room twice. For dinner we had: - Tomato salad: The tomatoes were so sweet and juicy! Apparently they get it straight from a farm 15 minutes away, and you could taste how fresh they were. Plus the serving size was pretty big for a salad, so we were off to a good start. - Fried chicken: The skin was nice and crispy while the meat itself was still tender. The side vegetables tasted really fresh (again, the nearby farm delivered!), and the chili cornbread added some interesting heat to the dish. - Gouda squash ravioli: Sooooooo muuuuccchhh cheeeeeese (which I love)!!! Also, very generous helping of squash and lots and lots of ravioli. There was so much of it that we even had some to take away :) - Apple crumble: While the 'crumble' part was well executed, the star was the apple - thinly sliced slivers of fresh sweetness. For the breakfast buffet, they offered standard stuff like pancakes, muffins, fruits and cake. Sounds like typical breakfast fare (which it was), though there were some interesting twists: pancakes were flavoured with pumpkin spice, the muffins were bacon cheddar, and the cake was a chocolate swirl coffee cake. Nice little touches here and there to differentiate a standard breakfast offering. So while it's a bit too far to make the drive just for the Renard Room, definitely give it a try if you're in the area. Produce, fruits and veggies are fresh and of the highest quality, and the chef has interesting takes on old staples. Highly recommend!
