Being so happy with her care from Sea Otter class to Penguin class, we chose to enroll our youngest as soon as we could as well. We've spent the last 3 years with Challenge and just had the joy of seeing our daughter graduate and be ready for K. Reflecting on how we chose to enroll initially, I did extensive research and tours of the Mandarin immersion programs local to Fremont in 2020/2021. Challenge, despite it being on a somewhat non-traditional school campus, was the best choice to us. I appreciated the smaller teacher:student ratios. After starting, it was also really clear that there was a good balance of schedule/routines but also new topics introduced to the students over time. Personally a big fan of project based learning (PBL) which is broadly what the curriculum follows. My impressions were that the preschoolers are introduced early and exposed frequently to letters and numbers and my oldest has naturally grown curiosity in reading - this is super important to me - as opposed to a rigorous academic environment. We're very happy with the experience at Challenge. So much so that although we are moving to the Peninsula, we'll actually be transferring to another campus for my youngest to keep up with the great experience we've had with the overall Challenge program.

She had previously been in a home daycare, so we were a little anxious about how she would adjust to a new and much bigger environment. Thankfully, everything turned out wonderfully! The teachers in the toddler room were so kind, patient, and supportive, which made her transition very smooth. She also became potty trained fairly quickly after seeing the other children use the toilets independently, with lots of encouragement and help from her teachers. After transitioning to the preschooler room, she continued to have wonderful teachers who were caring and patient. The teachers, together with the director, Ms. July, were always there to help whenever we had questions or needed support. We also loved the activities at school, they were fun and engaging while helping her learn about numbers, phonics, the solar system, and so much more. As a bilingual family, we especially appreciated the bilingual environment. It allowed our daughter to feel comfortable expressing herself in either Mandarin or English, which was very important to us. And perhaps the most special part of her time at Empire was that she made her best friend there! When graduation came around, the staff made sure she was fully included in the ceremony, which says a lot about the culture of a school. Our younger daughter spent a full year in the 2s class, and while it's always hard to transition to school at that age, she truly enjoyed her time there. Her Mandarin improved drastically, and so much of that credit goes to Ms. Ying, Ms. Lisa, and Ms. Kari, who are warm, attentive, and genuinely care about each child. As a busy family, we also appreciated that Empire provides meals and plans so many fun activities throughout the year, including a petting zoo, bounce house, water play, holiday celebrations, and more. It is onsite at the school, having a dedicated classroom and a dedicated playground. It's very convenient. All staff are bilingual in both English and Mandarin so they can offer Mandarin support on homework for kids in the Mandarin immersion program. They also provide academic support on Math and English. Things like helping students review materials in preparation of a test that the teacher will give. The kids do get play time at the playground. They provide some small snacks if kids are hungry. But we usually bring ours. They offer some extracurricular activities like coding or chess or art or dance with additional fee. What class to offer at the site depends on the number of students who are interested and signed up. But they do let kids trial the first class and see if they are interested to continue. Overall the staff are great and they create a safe environment for kids to learn, play, and socialize. The academic support on Mandarin and other subjects is also a plus to the program even for a native Mandarin speaker like me.

We love that they learn both English and Mandarin, and the Montessori approach encourages them to be independent and curious. It goes well beyond the basics. Kids get exposure to STEM topics, Spanish and even yoga, and there's still plenty of time carved out for outdoor play every day. It doesn't feel rushed or overly structured. The balance is just right for this age group. The food situation is also worth mentioning because not every school gets this right. Maple has a no microwave, no fridge policy, which sounds strict at first but it actually encourages parents to send fresh, healthy food. The school also provides healthy snacks. And if you're a working parent who doesn't always have time to prep a lunch, Ms. Radhika launched a fresh hot lunch program. You enroll at the start of the month and your child gets a freshly made hot lunch each day. The price is very reasonable (around $5 per meal), and even though we haven't personally used the service, we think it's a fantastic option for busy families. Another thing Ms. Radhika introduced is a partnership with Amazing Athletes, a dedicated sports program that comes in once a week. The idea is to introduce kids to a variety of sports so they can figure out what they actually enjoy, rather than being pushed into one thing early. It's a great way to get them moving and curious about athletics. The program runs about $80 a month and is totally worth it. On the practical side, parking is never a headache here. There's a dedicated lot with plenty of space, so you're never circling the block or rushing to a street spot at drop-off. Our kiddo and her friends sometimes hang out in the parking area after pickup for a little impromptu snack party, which tells you something about how comfortable and unhurried the whole vibe is there. The campus itself is really well set up. The playground area is nicely shaded, surrounded by trees and has a solid fence so kids can run around freely without you worrying. With only six classrooms, this is a smaller campus compared to some of the bigger Learn and Play locations, and that's honestly a plus. The playground is incredible and recently renovated with a Tiny Town and a little garden that the kids help tend to. The snacks are healthy and they try to mix it up. The bathrooms are really clean (weird thing to bring up but says a lot!) as is the whole facility. It's nicely air conditioned in the summertime and each classroom has its own HEPA filter. Doors to get into the lobby and another set of doors to the classrooms are keypad locked so it feels super safe. We loved all the opportunities we got to participate in (mother's/father's day breakfasts, Christmas musical, Halloween/Trunk or Treat, Easter egg hunt, etc). One of our son's favorite activities each Wed was chapel time led by Pastor Doug where he got to sing and dance with the whole school. When it came to COVID, the school always kept us updated on any changes in public health guidance and any exposures. We also really appreciated their approach to discipline which was firm but always loving and respectful. KH and FCC invest so much into the kids and if they expanded their program to elementary school, it would be a no brainer to stay. But alas, our son has aged out and we are sad to leave. If we ever find another teacher half as amazing as Mrs. Rana, who taught our son over the last year+, we will count ourselves lucky.
