This is hands down the BEST gym around. First off, the space is huge and has all the equipment you'd ever want or need. THE BIG: WOOO CROSSFIT!! Right off Jefferson Memorial Parkway, this Crossfit gym is perfect for any resident living in Alexandria. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I remember when this place in it's old spot down the road. I'm glad they moved because this space is 2x as big and 5x as nice. They've upgraded the restroom situation to 2 rather than a single unit! Gamechanger. My experience is mainly with olympic lifting competitions, namely Cap City Open. That competition is traditionally held in the Spring and on a Sunday. I participated this year and was pleasantly surprised at the new gym. More lighting and 2 platforms for simultaneous lifting made this year's event run very smooth. Aside from the lifting event, the gym has a plethora of equipment (aka toys). There are plenty of rogue rigs to perform squats, pull ups, ring dips, etc. There were also some unknown rigs (yeah i'm talking about the monkey bars) scattered across the gym. As for the programming, I would assume it is like a traditional crossfit class: warmup, strength, and then a VO2 max conditioning wod. That's something I would call and confirm with Trident Crossfit. I worked out here for about a month before I had to leave due to leaving the DC area. Bottom line: Every person I met here was fantastic. From the training staff to my classmates, everyone was phenomenal. I've never loved/hated working out so much. Your gateway to ultimate fitness lies in a row of industrial warehouses, so keep an eye out, it is somewhat hard to spot from the road. If you are like me and go to class at 0600, just look for the only place open with lights on. I'm the guy who loathes going to a regular gym, I can never find the motivation to push myself as hard as I need to, or even get my lazy ass to the gym. Typical gyms aren't for working out, at least not like this. Trident is like having your own set of personal trainers. The classes are small, the instructors have expert-level fitness and exercise knowledge, and are just all-around world-class people. CrossFit is hard. Really hard, especially for a fat ass like me. But when the going gets tough and you're the last person in the class to finish, you'll find the rest of your classmates coming over to cheer you on or finish your workout with you. It's a great feeling to know that those around you also want you to finish the workout, even though it has no effect on them. CrossFit attracts a truly remarkable type of athlete. Where do I begin??? Let me just start by saying that Trident Crossfit is one of the best decisions I have ever made. And forgive me because I may get a little sappy... yes, I love it just that much. I had wanted to join a crossfit gym for a couple of years, but was an avid runner, and I wasn't quite ready to take time out of my running schedule to lift weights. I grew up as a swimmer, transitioned into running, and wanted to get into triathlons... I love the endurance workouts and the last thing I ever wanted to do at the gym was lift weights. I thought it was boring and somewhat a waste of time b/c I needed to get in the distance and felt that I was dedicating plenty of time to "working out." But unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), last June, I broke my foot, which caused me to defer my entry to my first Tri in September. I was quickly going stir-crazy with all of my pent up energy and needed to find some way to exercise. I was trying to get back into running, but couldn't run back to back days without discomfort, so I sought out a low (foot) impact alternative... enter Trident Crossfit. Trident Crossfit welcomed me with open arms... the first day I walked into the gym, I was greeted by friendly, smiling faces... not just the staff, but the members too. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE is happy to be there b/c that's what Trident does- it makes you happy. I felt like a kid on training wheels the first week... I swore I was an athlete when I walked in the door, that I was in pretty good shape, but I struggled with the workouts and struggled to figure out why I was "struggling." I didn't know a "WOD" from a "burpee" from a "deadlift". There is a learning curve...but there wasn't one class that went by that I was discouraged enough to quit because my classmates, my coaches, the owners were there right next to me the entire time- encouraging me,supporting me, teaching me, coaching me and pushing me to do better. Now... time to put this into a bit more context. In the past three months I have learned/can now do the following (SAFELY*): 1. How to correctly do a push-up (Thank you T-Battle and Matt) 2. How to correctly air squat- with my knees out (Thank you Chriss and the rest of the Trident staff- ha!) 3. How to Dead Lift, Clean and Jerk, Push Press, etc... still working on the form, but I couldn't even tell you what these were, let alone how to do them, before I started (Thank you Andrea and Alyssa) 4. Pull-ups (note: haven't done one since High School) 5. Rope Climb ... and the list continues. *Note- I am so respectful of Trident Crossfit- they made sure my form was right before they would let me put weight on. Safety first- avoid unnecessary injury. What's suprised me most, however, is my running performance. I have been running races for the past 10 years. I have run a marathon and a series of 10Ks, 10 milers, half marathons, etc. Before I broke my foot in June, I averaged and PRed at an 9:08/mile pace in a half marathon. I went out and ran my first "longer" distance run (15K) 2 weeks ago at an 8:35/mile pace and this past weekend ran an 8K at an 8:18/mile pace (PR). This was with 3 x week of Crossfit... and a 3-6 mile run, maybe, once/week for the past three months. I have never felt stronger during a race. Since starting at Trident Crossfit... I have never been stronger. I have never felt more challenged. I have never felt more accomplished. I have never felt more confident that if I put my mind to it, anything is possible. Trident is my sanctuary from the whirlwind called DC and the community is quickly becoming my family and my team. read more

I initially tried Trident because of its proximity to work and the flexible class schedule. I was, admittedly, hesitant at first being new to crossfit and just getting back into working out after a ~two-year hiatus. Trident is perfect for those who are new to the sport and for those who are seasoned veterans. The coaches come to know you and your skillsets, and are true friends from day one. They will help you to scale the workouts both to what they think you can do, based on your experience, and to help push you to achieve more. They recognize your weaknesses (and appreciate your strengths) and will push you each week to go beyond your physical boundaries. I cannot say enough good things about this place. One of my favorite things is that they are continuously improving the gym. They are purchasing new equipment for the box (new ropes, Atlas balls, etc), building 12-foot walls to climb over, introducing new classes (like SEALFIT) and becoming involved in various events in the crossfit community (31 Heroes WOD, FGB, etc). I have met numerous friends here who I interact with inside and outside the gym. It is a fantastic, fun and loving group of people. Everyone that I have met is supportive and encouraging. After three months, I upped my membership from 3 times a week to unlimited. I've lost 17 pounds and I am in the best shape of my life. This is an amazing gym. The workouts are intense, the instructors are motivational and expertly trained, and the people here truly make up a community. There are people of all levels, and though I'm in the lower tier of athletes, I'm never made to feel that way, and improvements are noticed not only by me, but mentioned to me by the coaches. The other thing that always impresses me is that they run on time, use all the time allotted (and more), never have dead time, and spend a measurable amount of it on instruction, without feeling like you are missing out on valuable time working out. The cost is high compared to a regular fitness center, but not higher than Crossfit gyms in the area. Even though $170-200 monthly may seem like a lot, it is less than having a personal trainer and more effective, and far more effective than trying to do it on my own (as I'm not a fitness pro). My one wish is that they one day build showers. It would make things much more convenient for me and streamline my day. But, this would be above and beyond, because most Crossfit gyms do not include this. If you live in the area (or even if you don't), I suggest going to the free session and seeing what it is about. I've been to two others (locally and in other states), and they do not come close to measuring up. read more

Major back pain! I been having back and knee pain since my last crossfit workout. I joined Trident Crossfit about a month ago. My plan is lose 20 pounds by spring of 2013. My back start hurting after my second group class. I thought a little pain can't be that bad. Mind you the classes are pretty big so the instructors can't watch every single member. My back pain progressively got worst, the kicker was i felt my knee doing jump squats!!! NOW I have excruciating pain in my back and knee!! I like the staff, but stay away from crossfit gyms. I made an appointment to see my doctor next week. I hope I don't have a bad injury. read more

I sit at a desk or a conference table or tethered to a conference call 10 hours a day. TRIDENT IS MY RECESS. I'm hooked! I'm closing in on three months in Chad's bootcamp program and I've never been stronger, worked out harder or had this much fun at 6 AM. I am hooked on the positive and engaging instructors and the crazy challenges every day that I arrive at Trident! As soon as one workout ends, I'm thinking about how excited I am for tomorrow's WOD. Word to the wise: the later in the day, the more crowded the classes. I have felt welcome and well monitored as a newbie no matter which class I have dropped in on but with the smaller crowds ensure that your n00b poor form is easy to spot and correct, to be sure. Every instructor is involved and positive and if you're feeling lost or confused your questions are never met with rolling eyes or a half-cocked answer. I drank the kool-aid and it was oh so good! Trident Crossfit is fabulous! The coaches, the space, the work outs, the other clients... ALL great! The coach to client ratio is perfect; there are times when I feel like I am getting a one on one workout! The coaches see everything and will work one on one with you if they know you need help with a certain movement. They are all knowledgeable on the all movements and will often give a little anatomy lesson to explain what muscles you are using. The coaches know each clients strengths and weaknesses and will you scale the workout to suit you. They also know when to push you to do a little more then you think you can do. The workouts start with a warm up and end with a "stretching session" to help with the muscle soreness that can occur the next day. I find new places can be often scary and a little overwhelming, Trident Crossfit was no exception the first day I walked through the doors. There were tons of fit people mulling around the first day, which was intimidating, that scary feeling only lasted about 2 seconds before I was greeted by Andrea and Chriss who are forever in cheerful moods! They know everyone by their first name and will greet any new person that walks through the door that is looking for an initial free workout. Trident Crossfit is conveniently located off of Route 1 near Potomac Yards, there is always ample parking. You will find the gym easy to locate, just look for the open bay door and listen for the music! read more

So in general, here's the deal: (1) CrossFit is really expensive but (2) if you join a place as friendly and well-run as Trident, CrossFit is totally worth it and will change your life. I distinctly remember how uncomfortable I was the first time I ever stepped into a CrossFit gym. I was a swimmer in my past life and had spent absolutely no time around weights. I spent my first several weeks paranoid that I was always about to drop a barbell on my head or fall down or pick too much weight and end up hurting myself. At Trident, this is a total non-issue: the coaches are well-trained and attentive, which reduces the risk that you do something you shouldn't be doing. If you have any anxiety about getting started, trust me when I say that you should just take the plunge and sign-up for a trial workout. The staff will absolutely take care of you from there. I've trained at a number of CrossFit gyms over the past several years and have developed a pretty keen sense of when a gym is great in terms of community and when it's just OK. Trident is definitely great. People are friendly and span the whole range of the athletic spectrum from those working out for the first time in years to those entering formal CrossFit competitions. Even though all of the classes are ostensibly the same, once you've joined you should try out different time slots during the day and find a group that you look forward to working out with. Community reinforcement is what sets becoming a member of a CrossFit gym apart from trying to go at getting in shape on your own, and the folks at Trident do community as well as anyone. read more

Being an avid biker since finding out Big Wheels weren't as cool as they once were, I have always strived to be in better shape. I joined a globo gym near my home in efforts to go often and get in shape. I even started to bike to work! That lasted about 3 months.... in 2008. I evolved into more of a fair weather athlete as reality took over and found myself making excuses instead of doing. I mean come on, grocery bags and happy hours are NOT designed with bikers in mind! After joining Trident, my view of getting in shape completely changed. Initially I didn't know what to expect! Having a coworker as a crossfit machine is intimidating. 100 pullups? Can we try 1 first? What did you burpee? All of my inhibitions were put to rest the minute I walked in. Instructors/Peers - They are experienced, extremely knowledgable and natural motivating teachers. Instructors/teachers of any class really set the tone and energy level of the class. Trident instructors really encourage, educate, and motivate. Classes - Doing a little bit of research regarding all the CF gyms in the area, Trident does it differently. Aside from the WOD of the day every class has structure. Skill, WOD, Regeneration. --Skill-- Whether you're experienced or a newbie, the instructor goes over the important movements of the WOD and everyone practices the movement. Repetition and replication are the keys to proper movement. --WOD-- Your personal hell for however long they see fit. Terrible in a good way! --Regen--#1 thing people forget is to stretch out the muscles you just wrecked doing any sort of movement. Helps the soreness and readys you for tomorrow! Facility - Clean, well thought out, spacious, and a loud stereo. (questionable iPods at times) 'nuff said. Trident has become part of my daily regiment. I'm getting into the best shape I've ever been in surrounded by people who make it someplace I want to be.... sometimes in a christmas sweater/vest... or 80s clothes.... without my hands on my hips.... while doing a brutal workout! I've been doing Crossfit 4-5 days a week for over 4 years. I've been a member of 7 Crossfit gyms due to moves and overseas mobilizations. I travel a lot and pay to visit gyms when I travel. I've probably been to 40 gyms. I've been at Trident for a collective 2 years. They held my membership during mobilizations and provide a military discount. More importantly they have top notch trainers who are very very focused on form. I still receive productive corrections regularly. They have large classes so are a bit limited at times with space but anticipate issues and arrange WODs accordingly. They have newcomer, prescribed, and intensity levels for every WOD. They demonstrate each movement and have scaling options for everyone. Unlike some gyms they don't cater to only the best athletes and I've not seen any favoritism. I don't care for loud grunting gym mates who rip off shirts. There is none of that (at least in the morning classes) but rather a diverse demographic. If I had to say a negative it would be that I wish there were more long WODs. But that is a personal preference and most Crossfit folks would probably disagree. Crossfit is expensive, but if you want to join the community, this is your place no matter who you are and what your experience. read more

Wow! What an awesome Crossfit box! I dropped in for a week while traveling from Maui to visit with my daughter over the Thanksgiving holiday and I truly could not have had a better experience. The owners, Chris and Andrea Smith, are two of the nicest and most inspiring people I have ever met. When I first arrived, I was immediately greeted by Andrea and introduced to coaches Stacy and Josh who welcomed me to their class and led a great warmup and provided excellent instruction on the days WOD. During the week, I was able to workout with many of Trident's other coaches to include: Aby, Melanie, Donnie, and a few others whose names escape me (my apologies). I found all of Trident's coaches to have expert level knowledge in leading their classes and in teaching the skills required for each workout. Trident's facility is amazing, equipped with everything you could imagine you would need to get for great workout. I started Crossfit on my own. I thought I was pushing myself, working out as hard as I could. I was wrong. The staff at Trident has pushed me above and beyond what I thought I could do, and now I know I can do more. I have a lot of bad habits and improper form. They are working with me one-on-one to make me a better athlete. Each class is a total workout; warm-up, WOD, pre-hab/recovery. All skill levels workout together and are scaled appropriately. A great gym in walking distance of major hotels in Arlington. I dropped in on a 5:30 class and had a great time. I love when the locals welcome guests and these guys did. I was lucky enough to be there on a bench day (what guy doesn't love to bench press??). It seems they follow a good structured plan given the fact this was the last bench workout prior to testing 1RM. I appreciate the 'constantly varied' aspect of Crossfit...but also believe there should be some method to the madness. Seems as if these folks have it figured out. 10 stars, is that possible? The NoVA area is flooded with CF boxes so what is important in choosing one and making a commitment? 1. The coaches 2. The facility 3. The community 4. The cost I attended Trident for a month, and was impressed with each of the four. The coaches: they all love the sport of fitness, and truly understand the movements. Many boxes will take your money, sell you the shirt, but never really show you how to succeed/progress/get fit. Trident diagnoses errors in form, explains the science behind the, and then helps you to correct them. After one month with Trident, I find myself not only fitter but using better form. This correlates directly with fewer injuries. Every article you read bashing CF can almost always be directly tied to boxes that have coaches that allow their athletes to compete using poor form. Not Trident. The facility (which is about to relocate) is excellent. Lots of equipment, and I never felt like I was missing out because they were short of something. The community: every box has one, I enjoyed Trident's. Sometimes, as an outsider, it is hard to get accepted by long time members. After a few weeks of coming five days a week, people were asking me my name, cheering me on, and (even better) giving me tips on how to improve form and get fit. The cost: comparable and competitive. (Sigghhhhhhh) Where do I begin? Since January 18th, 2011 I have had the privilege of being a student at Trident CF. Owned by a former Navy SEAL, I can say that Chriss Smith has magnificently set the tone for an atmosphere that is at times nostalgic and always winning! Crossfit has been taking the USA by storm in regards to exercise trends. Trident CF has done a fantastic job at not only being an enjoyable place to come, but a conglomerate of team building, self-assurance, happiness, and friendship. I am still a current member at Trident CF and the plethora of bad ass people is ever growing these days. Monthly, or bi-monthly there is a large group of Trident folks that go out on the town and have the most creative of times, and I mean that in a good way. The fellow students here are always encouraging each other, driving one another, and the "box" is constantly overflowing with fellow comradery. Moving on, the rest of the coaches at this gym WILL COACH you. Often times, humans get into a groove and get comfortable, understandably so. Not at Trident. The coaches at Trident will strive and never stop pushing or working with a student who needs it. At times, I get sloppy and all of the instructors here seem to see it from wherever they are standing. Even bad form, which we all are guilty of on any given day are fixed on the spot!!! Trident Crossfit is AWESOME!!!! The instructors are top notch. Its not like a lot of crossfit gyms where you are just thrown into the workout of the day. The instructors warm you up, go over the movements before the workout of the day, and stretch you after for the cool down. The instructors are high energy, positive, but will challenge you to mentally push yourself over and pass what you thought you could achieve. The atmosphere is soooo positive and everyone supports everyone. We push ourselves while seeking motivation from the energy in the gym with the music pumping and how hard everyone else is putting out. I have played sports my entire life at all levels. I'm in a profession now where I must be in great shape. Trident Crossfit pushes me to a whole other level then I would be able to push myself alone. The workouts are as intense as YOU make them. If you put out 50% then expect the return to be the same but if you put out 100% the return is AWESOME. I walk into Trident nervous at times because I know the wonderful instructors at Trident and other memebers are going to push me and challenge me to take it to that next level. When I'm done with the WOD there is that wonderful feeling of accomplishment. If you are willing to give 100% of your ability Chriss, Andrea, Tom, Ellen, and Chad will help you achieve whatever goal it is that you have. It doesn't matter if you can't chew gun and walk straight. These guys are so patient and will teach you everything you need to be successful at crossfit. These instructors are AWESOME. I could go allll day long talking about how great TRIDENT CROSSFIT is but you really should see it for yourself. Very laid back and chill environment but when its time to get to work people are focused. Stop in and try out the free workout. What do you have to lose. It's only 30-40 minutes of your time. High-energy, very knowledgeable, and friendly coaches who spend a lot of time actually...coaching. Other gyms I've worked out at talked good game during the sell phase and during foundations classes, but once one was an "experienced" member, the coaching and emphasis on technique fell by the wayside. And mobility? Forget about it. Chriss, Andrea, Chad, Dave and the gang really emphasize good form/technique over weight and reps. And I've spent more time on the foam roller and tending to mobility in my short time there than I have in all the years previous combined. Other benefits? If I recall, the number of different sessions they offer each day is probably the best in the DC area, and they rock "You're the Best (Around)" from The Karate Kid in one of their iPod mixes. read more

Let me start by saying that I am not a member of this gym. I have gone but I've moved and now go to another CrossFit gym. Trident is legit. They know how to run their gym well, they provide beneficial *SMART* programming that will improve the health and fitness of their clients, and Chriss and Andrea are genuinely helpful and amazing people. Oh, and their other coaches are great too ;) You need to know that Trident is the Level 1 cert location for the DC metro area. What does this mean? They know their stuff here. Their training makes sense, they focus on the movements rather than letting clients have bad form performed quickly. I don't recommend every CrossFit gym, but I 100% recommend this one. read more

I joined Trident in May after having a baby and taking 18 months off from working out... by September I was running a half marathon. The workouts are challenging, the instructors are fantastic, and the gym isnt just full of meatheads slamming weights. I like that they focus on form and that they will help you modify when you cant do the workout as written. There is no way to describe the unbridled energy and enthusiasm of the owners of this Gym, Andrea and Chris. I am recovering from medical condition/procedure (MVR and AVR) and am undergoing individual training with them. I am amazed at the progress I have made in such a short stent. They understand and respect physiology and push me to my limits. I have done this in place of physical therapy offered by the insurance company - which was a joke. I am much better off. Hopefully I will join regular class soon. These people are inspiring, hard workers and just good to the core. read more

This was a mixed bag for me. My brother has been encouraging me to join Crossfit- he loves it and I wanted to be a little more disciplined with my workouts. I have mostly been jogging, stair stepping and walking recently. I'm not in horrible shape but definitely could use a lot more work and strength training. I signed up for a free intro class. There had to have been at least 20 of us in the class, if not more, and the gym was filled with other people working out at the same time. They did mention it was the largest intro class they had, but I was expecting a much smaller group. The workout itself was fun and I got to try some new things. What I didn't like about it was that I felt singled out from the get go for extra attention. I had never used a Rowing machine before but I'm not going to learn correct form by someone hovering over me yelling instructions over the din of the gym. I tend to pick up a little more over each sucessive time trying- usually by watching demo's and others. I was told I was being timed to "baseline" my performance but then I had to stop mid-row so the instructor could explain how they wanted my back to look, how they wanted my arms to look, etc. I felt my time was completely meaningless. I wish they had let me just continue with poor form so I could at least feel my time had some value to me. Fortunately, after the first 10 minutes or so, the instructor who had been spending too much time correcting me found some other people to go correct their form as well. (The other instructors were much more low-key with their corrections and were also encouraging). Overall, I enjoyed the workout- I just wish the class had been smaller and that I hadn't been singled out for form correction from the get-go. I think I will try Crossfit again but I might try another gym in the area to see if they are a better fit for me and the instruction style I like. read more
