I first want to say that this review does not reflect on the many excellent trainers who rent this space and are responsive and talented. It only reflects on the owner and manager of this gym and their lack of clear policies and terrible communication. The facility is poorly maintained. A huge hole in the women's bathroom wall has been there for a year. There are no rules about wiping mats or machines after use, and I have repeatedly seen trainers and clients pick up mats they just sweated on and put them back on "the pile." Finally, there are often so many people jammed in that it is an obstacle course of weights, balls, and benches to work around. Second, when I started there using a Groupon, there was no "orientation" or contract discussion. I had to ultimately ask my trainer if I was supposed to be paying him directly or paying the gym. (He suggested I pay him). The engagement was completely unclear and nobody from management EVER spoke to me. In fact, the owner did not address me (not a "hello") in the ~8 months I worked out there. Which brings me to my final issue - there was a big disconnect/miscommunication about "whose client I am" that led to them telling me that my trainer of choice could not train me. Despite the fact that I had no contract with the company, they accused the trainer of trying to poach me from them. Fine. You have unclear policies. But after receiving this news from the owner, I tried to reach him four times via email and text to try to work something out. I never once received a response. So I tried his sidekick - the so-called manager. Same result. No response. As an aside, I do know that the owner is consistently absent and either terribly late or a no-show for his own clients. There is clearly something not right there. Sorry to flame this place, but it really is a mess. read more

I started going to Fitology since it opened in 2013. I frequented the Trader Joe's and saw the sign for personal training. I contacted them, and the rest is history. I've been training with Nick, the owner, since then. I must admit, I have "guns" like no other! Well...for a petite asian girl...lol! I'm super lazy when it comes to working out. I don't have a gym membership because I'll never go! I NEED someone to watch over me and tell me what to do. Otherwise, I'll do 5 sit ups and pat myself on the back. Growing up, I was that girl that always got picked last for kickball - I was scrawny and often referred to as skin and bones. I'm on one of those DC softball leagues, and usually when I'm up to bat, the whole infield and outfield move in. Little do they know I have arms of "pseudo" steel!" I haven't hit a grand slam yet, but that's my goal! I can even climb walls and break into my own place apparently (true story). Nowadays, when I reach for that glass of wine...and when I'm just about to take a sip, I sometimes get a comment on my biceps, and I have Fitology and Nick to thank for that! read more

This was the first time I've ever tried "boot camp". I didn't know what to expect but after a month in I feel stronger, more alert and healthier than I have in a very long time. Our 13-year-old son was interested in boxing, and I had trouble finding affordable one-on-one lessons for him to explore this interest. Enter Fitology and Karl Lataillade, the young man who wound up training him. While not cheap, the price was fair and the lessons our son received from Karl were worth their weight in gold. Karl built up his confidence as well as his skills, encouraging him in every way possible. This was not easy for Karl, as both our son and I have ADHD and frequently forgot lessons or had to reschedule. Karl always handled our disorganization with grace and understanding. The trainers at this gym are great. I work out with Nick and have also done individual boxing training with Karl. I highly recommend both of them! Nick is one of the best trainers in the DMV (believe me, I've had at least a dozen in the area). He's extremely knowledgeable about the body and how to improve it, and he's really into safety. In fact, he helped me to heal beautifully from a sprained ankle. I can run faster than I did before the sprain! He's awesome! Also he walks the talk and lives a life centered around fitness and health which is inspiring. Karl is also great. I had never done 1 on 1 boxing training but I loved it. I will do more sessions with him as soon as I get some gloves (although they do provide some if you want to use theirs). Bottom line: these guys are safe and effective. read more

I wish I could write a review about my massage session, but that's hard to do when you can't schedule it because no one will call you back. I bought an Amazon Local voucher for a Swedish massage. I own a business. I'm stressed. I don't want to be stressed trying to schedule the damn thing that's supposed to un-stress me. I called three separate times over a two week period the last part of August and got an answering machine each time. I left two messages, a week and a half apart, clearly stating I wanted to schedule a massage and would appreciate a call back. Nothing. Nada. Zero. Crickets. I run an extremely busy business too, and the rule for myself and my employees is to return all calls within 24-48 hours. I'm a reasonable person. Two weeks and no one has the respect to call me back? I should not have to take time out of my day multiple times and beg someplace I technically already paid to get the services owed to me. This has happened a few times when I've bought vouchers (not from Amazon Local exclusively, all the companies) and I figure there are two major options at play here: 1) The business offering the voucher simply did not do its homework and is now inundated with requests they cannot honor because they are overcapacity. 2) They do not care about my business since I only bought a voucher and am not a "full-paying" customer. (Though that is the point of these vouchers, to try and MAKE me one!) I am extremely disappointed at the time I have wasted with this business. I am a reasonable person, but two weeks and nothing? That's ridiculous. There's thousands of other massage places in the DMV- can't wait to try those out instead. read more

I've been working with Nick for just shy of two years now, and really look forward to my workouts! We never do exactly the same routine, which keeps things interesting for me. He's always good for tips and advice too, either during our session or if I have any questions throughout the week. I tried out a trainer once at a chain gym, and hated the experience. This is so much better! Not only is Nick great, but all the guys who train there are very friendly. I dropped down to once a week during my pregnancy, and Nick was great about finding ways to modify workouts to keep pace with how I felt any given day. I'm sad to have to take a break now, but I will definitely be back in a couple months when I'm cleared to exercise again! read more

I bought a groupon for a stretch session for one hour. I was kept waiting for 20 minutes for my appointment which I thought was a long wait. No one sitting in the office came over to me to say one word while I was waiting. Then the treatment was in a room with people exercising and music blaring. The person who gave me the treatment said she hoped to be able to use the massage room for the session but it was not available. She said that in the future she'd be able to use it. So I purchased three more sessions on Groupon. I gave the place an honest review on Groupon. Next thing, i get an email from the owner saying that he is refunding my money and basically to go find another place that would suit my needs. What a lousy businessman. I'd never step foot back in there again. The guys got No class. read more

I worked with Nick for 1 year at FITology. He is an excellent trainer who is very knowledgeable about fitness and nutrition. He was able to get me a lot stronger and increase my muscle mass. I went from bench pressing 45 pounds to 140 pounds. He is also a very friendly and easy to work with. He is EXTREMELY motivational in a positive way, I never thought I'd enjoy working out and he actually helped me see that I was wrong. I signed up for the boot camp classes last summer, shortly after they opened. Nick was great! He is so knowledgable and accommodating and pushes you to what he knows you're capable of, but not too far. The workouts were exactly what I was looking for in terms of diversity and intensity. He changes up the drills so you're not doing the same thing everytime you come in and you're able to work on different muscles. Sometimes, when the classes were a bit smaller, he really personalized it towards whoever was there and it felt more like a personal training session, which was a nice perk. I absolutely recommend this gym and paricularly the personal training and boot camp classes to anyone trying to either get in shape for the first time in a while or push yourself even further to gain more strength. Nick is a really friendly guy to work with and you know he's done his homework and knows exactly what he's talking about. I've taken boot camp classes throughout DC and it was well worth it for me to travel up to Bethesda on weekday mornings to get these workouts in because they really worked and I noticed the difference. read more

If you are a new working mom, stay away from Fitology. They don't take into consideration a new mom's limitations on fitness and nutrition. I went to Nick Singer at Fitology as a new mom trying to get back into shape after having a baby. I was seeking nutrition and fitness guidance. What I expected was a workout that would be appropriate for me, 6 weeks post partum, with nutrition and diet suggestions that would help me to be successful in achieving a healthy balance and getting back into shape. What I got was the complete opposite. Let's discuss his nutrition program first. Nick has a complex diet system that he sells for an exorbitant amount. As a working mom with two kids, forget it! His requirements were unrealistic and when I asked for an alternative, something I could ease into his response was that he didn't have any ideas and then proceeded to say that I "wasn't ready" and "wouldn't fully benefit" from his exercise program without "buying his diet." All I was looking for were a couple of tweaks to my current diet, I needed to ease in slowly. The exercise regime he put me on also was inappropriate. In fact, my back would often hurt after sessions. He specifically told me that he did not have much experience with new moms. Honestly, when I started seeing another trainer she was appalled by the exercises Nick had me doing and said they were wildly inappropriate. The customer service is also disappointing. The trainers don't send reminders for appointments. Every business from a hair salon to a doctor's office sends automated reminders. I also always experienced that Nick and the other trainers were often distracted, on their phones during sessions and making conversations with other trainers and customers rather than paying attention to their clients. They also never remembered specific pieces of information about injuries or limitations that I had mentioned, I always had to remind them. Other reviewers have mentioned that the gym is dirty and cluttered with boxes and that Nick spends too much time in his office to notice. I agree, definitely not a clean and comfortable environment. If you are looking for a trainer you can trust, who won't cause you injury and will respect your limitations, at a clean and comfortable gym STAY AWAY from Fitology. read more

I have had massages for the past 20 years and this is the worst I have ever had... Nene just puts on oil and rubs jumping from one part of the body to another without purpose and her phone was ringing 3 times and vibrating multiple times within the 30 minutes I stayed in that room.... please avoid Nene's massage by all means or you would regret it... I had 4 Personal Training sessions with Nick and 1 with Emmett (one session a week for 5 weeks). They are knowledgeable, patient (I often need routines explained/demonstrated), and professional. Each time we worked out for a complete hour, and I never felt short changed. By the end of the month I could see a noticeable difference in my endurance and weight. I had purchased a Groupon code for personal training with this place for about $100. They took my code via email before booking any of the sessions, cashed it, and never actually booked me for personal training. They only replied once after getting my code giving me a list of available days that were a month away on weekdays during times when I was at work. Then never responded to me when I told them those times wouldn't work for me and to provide me with alternatives or later hours. I tried calling them and their phone kept ringing endlessly. This is the only Groupon I had ever purchased that wanted my code ahead of time before providing or even booking the service. I guess once they had the money, I no longer mattered as a client. I was looking for somewhere to get fit with and start quickly. Their bookings were too far out for me to get started fast and were at times that most gainfully employed people cannot do. This is not the place to go to if you want to get in shape the right way. One of my friends had gone here in the past and they tried everything in their power to upsell him on shakes that he "needed to lose weight." If you want to get fit, I would suggest joining a real gym and definitely don't buy into any of their Groupon deals. read more

Two months ago, I got a Groupon for five one-hour personal sessions at Fitology - as someone who never really liked working out, I wanted to give it a try thinking that I will probably give up by the third session. I started training with Adrian, and my experience has been nothing but great! He is very knowledgeable and determined to find the right personalized workout plan that would be challenging without being repetitive. In fact, some of the exercises are really fun too! He gives very useful tips and advice and answers all of my questions. It's only been two months, but I am seeing the results already - my form improved, I gained strength, and don't get me started on the weight loss! I purchased a deal through groupon for stretch therapy. Getting the first appointment was somewhat difficult due to date/time availability however the first few sessions were very informative and educational so I would know exactly what I should do at home between sessions. The last session was with another therapist, Olga. This session wasn't as instructional but was more of a massage which helped a great deal. I always believed that I was just born with really bad genetics. Fitology has proven to me that you dont have to let your genetics dictate how you look or prevent you from getting the fit body that you want. After four months of training with nick, i have made the most progress I have ever made in my weight, measurements, strength, and physique. Nick gives great advice on nutrition, and how to improve your form to really maximize your workout and target certain muscles. He is extremely motivating and fun to work out with. If you are struggling with issues related to your eating habits - fatigue, cravings, weight gain or plateau, metabolic damage, etc. - using Fitology's nutritional services is the BEST investment you'll ever make. The owner, Nick, tailors a program just for you - and you can do this all online and over email. I visited Nick's gym for an initial assessment, and the rest was handled online - with GREAT success. The meal plan you receive is VERY specific (i.e., he tells you per meal: amount of protein, amount of veggies, amount of starchy carbs, etc.) - there was no guesswork, which I really liked - and it incorporates all the foods I told Nick I loved. Additionally, Nick has always been very responsive to any questions that I had along the way. And although the nutritional consulting is geared towards what you should eat to meet your goals, Nick - a personal trainer - also recommends an exercise regimen for you to use while on his eating plan to maximize your results. He tweaks the eating protocol and exercise protocol as he monitors your progress. After 8 months (I just hit my goal weight and am in the process of solidifying my results, so I am nearing my end of consulting with him), the result of my nutritional counseling with him is that I now have lots of energy (was tired all the time before), sleep better, have eliminated my sugar cravings (a complete miracle, in my opinion), and lost 19 pounds of fat. I feel amazing. Importantly, this is not a "diet." Nick doesn't believe in calorie cutting (I now eat more than I have in years), excessive cardio, or other types of "quick fixes." He works with you to help you change your lifestyle and to graduate to doing this on your own, without his help.
