Imagine you're sitting in the congregation with your 4 year old son. Its his first service and you want him to learn to appreciate church. Lately he's been cursing, using the F word and such and you're trying to get him to stop. "It's not right to use those words" you keep telling him. Imagine then the priest gets up to the podium for his sermon. All of the sudden he starts dropping bombs. You're shocked, you start feeling uncomfortable next to your son, but you stay because you think maybe he'll stop and maybe there is a point. But they don't stop. They just keep coming. You look down at your son feeling helpless. Obviously you don't want him getting the message that men who are supposed to be spiritual leaders speak this way. But there's more when the sermon ends the congregation applauds, even whoops. I've never been in any church service where people applauded ANYTHING, and there's a spiritual reason for that. Well that's what happened to me when I attended a service here. Awful. As people applauded I got up with my son and left feeling very disappointed that that was his first introduction to church. A priest who shows no respect for the tender ones who may be in his audience. A priest who speaks with crude language and is more interested in showing off and writing a nice piece than in passing along anything spiritual. Sadly we will never be back again. This happened many months ago, but I have been meaning to write a review since then because it has stuck so sharply in my mind. read more

I found Trinity Cathedral over 7 years ago and have enjoyed my experience throughout this time because it is a warm welcoming congregation and I love the services which help me with my connection to God and provide me an avenue for worship and prayer. The choir is stellar and the whole music program is superb! The Rosales organ is so beautiful and such an amazing instrument. The Dean and all the clergy are truly welcoming and make themselves very available to all congregants. Sunday sermons are always thought provoking and interesting. They have been a great help throughout the pandemic in helping people to carry on. The outreach ministries are a very important part of who the Cathedral is in the community. Food Pantry and other food provisions made available to the less fortunate are wonderful examples of "faith and love" working to help our neighbours. I first went to Trinity because it was the closest Episcopal church to me when I first moved to Portland and I am delighted it has become my church home. I couldn't have found a better fit for me. I discovered Trinity 3-4 years ago around Christmas time, and after attending their Christmas service, I could tell it was a very special place. The choir sounds amazing and I never get tired of hearing them. The community is very kind and friendly. The pastors are extremely intelligent and well-spoken people; I always enjoy listening to their insightful sermons on Sunday mornings. They also have lots of volunteering opportunities and free classes that you can attend on the weekends! Even if you aren't religious, I would highly recommend that you check out Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. They aspire to a "radical hospitality" that welcomes everyone, no matter your faith. read more

What drew me to Trinity and keeps me there is the outstanding music program. The choir and organists equal those I have heard in England and France. The music repertoire ranges from composers of the Renaissance, such as William Byrd and Thomas Tallis, through current works of the twenty-first century. The music and the cathedral itself are both beautiful. I attended two Sunday services and Easter Vigil last year when I lived in Portland. When I went here with my friend in October 2011, the priest gave an amazing sermon. Also, they supposedly have a young adults program--which in my experience is rare at Episcopal churches in Portland (Washington DC, where I live now is another story!). However, the size of the congregation feels a bit impersonal to a newcomer. read more

Trinity is a very inclusive church with beautiful music and thoughtful sermons. There are great musical programs for kids at 9 AM and godly play at 10 AM from Sept to June. The kids return from the Sunday school class to the cathedral before communion. All are welcome at the community table. There is also a family service in the Kempton Hall next to the cathedral on the first Sunday of the month from Oct to June where the kids do the readings, participate in the service, and the "choristers" kids music ensemble is the choir. Whether you have kids or not this is a great service to meet people of all ages in the parish. read more

As a sixth-generation Episcopalian, I appreciate the expansive traditional beauty of this cathedral. It is a peaceful and timeless spot for reflection and for taking in the music from their exquisite organ and top-notch choir. Nathan's sermons are always inspirational, thought-provoking and humorous. Why only three stars? While this church gives lip service to being friendly and open, on a personal level, I have found them to be anything but. At coffee hour, I find myself awkwardly standing around, trying to make eye contact and smile, with all the luck I had at my middle school dances. Old money and true hospitality are not mutually exclusive, but Trinity Episcopal Cathedral apparently hasn't gotten the memo. What turned me off forever was participating in the open choir one Sunday. In the summertime, they sometimes let people join the choir, for fun, supposed fellowship and because they are short on singers. In the rehearsal room, no one so much as said "hello," "good morning" or "welcome" to me. A little strange, but oh well. I enjoyed singing in the choir, but afterwards in the dressing room, I told a regular that they had such a wonderful choir and what a nice time I had had participating. She answered, "Well, many of us are professionals, and THE REST OF US ARE JUST DAMNED GOOD," and then she stomped off. Seriously. This was two years ago, and I haven't been back. read more

An inclusive church that has great programs for all ages. It's a large cathedral so it's easiest to meet people by diving in and finding your activities. My daughter got us into the food ministry outreach, which is a great way to help people and meet fellow parishioners. The music is awesome, but if it's not your thing, try the 8 am music-free service in the chapel. My teens have done the Nicaragua mission trip. Classes are always interesting. Don't be reluctant to throw yourself in--you'll get as much out of it as you put in. Outstanding dean and great, truthful interesting sermons. Love this church! Characterized by a respect for shared worship but no particular beliefs are mandated. Great place for your spiritual journey, wherever you are! read more

Beautiful church! The music is wonderful every week. The church does a lot for the community and there are many volunteer opportunities that anyone can get involved with. The services are all very easy to follow along with if you are a visitor. The sermons are honest and inspiring. Everyone is very kind and welcoming and coffee hour is always cheerful. It is a great church for families and they have amazing programs for all ages, including mission trips, youth groups, classes, and more. They also have many events and opportunities for people to get together outside of the regular services. Everyone is free to explore their own spirituality and beliefs and there is never any pressure to conform. Love it there! read more

We love this church- they have a great childrens program. Our 2 year old plays in the nursery and the 4 year old goes to Sunday school class while adults get to listen to Nate's excellent sermon and enjoy the beautiful choir music. The first Sunday of the month has an alternate family friendly service that the kids attend with us. read more
