We stopped in Springfield because friends kept saying how good the cashew chicken was. We looked into it and found it was invented here. We tried to go to the recommended restaurant where the chef owned but it was closed. We took a chance on triple eights and weren't disappointed. We ordered two Reg cashew chicken dinners and an order of chicken fried rice. Good portions all around and very tasty. I did expect more from the cashew chicken as ours seemed like the chicken was Popeyes but still good. The crab Rangoons were awesome plump and full of filling and not over cooked. The service was very attentive a lot more than I would have thought they would be so two thumbs up for them. The restaurant was very friendly well lit and comfy. Worst Chinese food I have had in a long time!!!! The sauce on the beef & broccoli reminded me of La Choy Chow Mein. The crab rangoon tasted as if it had been frozen, had no flavor, little filling & was not hot. The general chicken was decent. The egg roll (we were told took 5 min to make) & was the best part of the meal. The rice was terrible & cold!!! The menu says it is fried rice & we got white rice with soy sauce poured all over it. For Springfield, this place is a gem if you're looking for authentic Szechuan cuisine. We ordered off the Chinese menu and didn't regret the four dishes we got. I'm horrible with names but we got a salt and pepper shrimp dish, fish dish, eggplant dish and ma po tofu. Everything was tasty and not too spicy. You order first and pay at the counter and then you sit down. They still serve the typical Americanized Chinese dishes but I was very happy with what we ordered off the Chinese menu. Triple Eight's is the typical Springfield style Chinese food. It's fast, cheap and tasty enough to be my cousin and my auntie's favorite take-out Chinese joint. For me, I thought it was tasty but since I'm not used to eating Chinese food like this anymore, I have to say it's not my thing more than once a year when I'm home for the holidays to visit. No, this isn't like all the other fast food Chinese places in Springfield. If you're going to order the ordinary, cashew chicken and general chicken, they all taste the same. They've got a chinese menu and chef's specials on the board that you need to try. The regular menu is so boring -everyone makes the same dishes in town. My favorites are: black pepper beef (the kenny), salt & pepper shrimp, spicy beef, eggplant with pork (I think it's the lenny special- just ask) Their dumplings, shrimp frieds rice and hot & sour soup is also great! read more

OK! Now we're getting somewhere. For a city I think I've heard has more Chinese restaurants per capita than anywhere else in the country, I've been woefully dismayed with the quality of Chinese food in this town. Most severely underrepresented are some of the highlights of regional Chinese cuisine that I've come to love, like two of my favorites: 小笼包 (xiaolongbao, Shanghainese soup dumplings made popular in Taiwan) and 辣子鸡 (laziji, Chongqing-style dry-fried chicken). I guess I was spoiled living in Pittsburgh because we had pretty darn good and faithful representations of both (I basically lived at Everyday Noodle and Chengdu Gourmet). Before moving here, I had held out faint hope that there might be some semi-authentic representation of those cuisines at the very least. It turns out those hopes were in vain, lost among an endless sea of way-too-sickly-sweet cashew chicken plates from joint after joint after joint on virtually every street corner in the entire city. Triple Eights had been recommended to me by some local Yelpers as having an authentic Chinese menu, and so I was on my way to the nearby Tortilleria Perches for a torta when I decided to see if Triple Eights' authentic menu had anything resembling what I was hoping for. The first encouraging sign is that a menu I found via Google had a "Chinese" section...and it was all in Chinese characters. Some Google Translate work confirmed the presence of mapo tofu, which is an authentic dish that wouldn't be expected at an inauthentic place. There were also a couple of other dishes that Google translated as "crispy chicken" or "spicy chicken," though none seemed to actually use the characters for laziji. I hoped, though, that maybe they knew of the dish and could make it. Upon entering, I wasn't 100% sure that I had made the right choice, seeing as how the person manning the counter was very white. I decided to continue, though, because you just never know, right? I spotted the authentic Chinese menu, this time with pictures and words in English, stacked next to the cash register. Unfortunately, none of the ten or 12 dishes on the menu quite looked like what I was seeking, and so I asked the cashier if they had laziji, Chongqing dry-fried crispy chicken. She admitted she didn't know what I was asking about, but she immediately piped up that she would be happy to check, and I saw her go back and speak with an older woman of Chinese ethnicity. The older woman came out and it first recommended one dish, but then it was clear it wasn't quite what I was looking for. I showed her some pictures of what I had ordered in Beijing, and she commented it seemed similarly made as kung pao chicken. She assured me she would make it as similarly to my picture as possible, so I took the plunge. While the result wasn't quite what I was hoping for, it was actually pretty good, although the chicken didn't quite have the level of crispiness that the real dish demands, and the hallmark of Sichuanese cuisine--the flavors and spiciness of the mala and chili oil--was missing. The older woman came back to check on me and I said it was good but I was looking for something that kind of had a taste like mapo tofu (which I knew they had on their menu). She said I could ask them to drizzle the mapo tofu sauce over the chicken next time, which sounded good, but then I guess I said the magic word--that the chicken was from Sichuan province. Her eyes lit up as she said that her husband's family was Sichuanese and she knew just what I was looking for and whisked my plate out from under me. I then heard her shouting into the kitchen a lot of stuff about "mala," and I knew that she was speaking my language. Some sauce came out and was drizzled over my dish. As soon as she returned, I instantly got an aroma that confirmed what I had suspected. I bit into a piece and my taste buds were transported--well, maybe not all the way back to China, but at least to somewhere between here and Sichuan province. Maybe somewhere over Taiwan (where the owner is from). The chicken wasn't crispy enough. It was missing the typical scallions, garlic, cilantro, and ginger. It was too light on the mala and oil. But in this moment, it was heaven. At least a hint of the taste I sought was present. I'll give it another whirl soon now that they know what I'm looking for. And I might try some of the other things from their authentic menu. Perhaps someday the population base here in SGF will come to appreciate real authentic cuisine instead of a so-Americanized-it's-not-even version...and perhaps we can then support a true Sichuanese outlet here. Unfortunately, I won't hold my breath for that, but perhaps Triple Eights will be an adequate stopgap measure. read more

It's cold, almost 8pm, I'm still doing some work, but starving. I don't want to dine in at a sit down restaurant and I'm craving Chinese. With the 100+ Chinese-American restaurants in Springfield - they are mostly mediocre at best. However, Triple 8 was suggested by many for an "authentic menu." I really try to avoid Chinese food around here. I mean, what does that even mean in SW Missouri - b/c authentic Chinese runs a huge range from Northern Chinese, Cantonese, Taiwanese, so I figured I would have to figure this out for myself. Things to Note: 1) This place is Taiwanese. They speak Taiwanese and Mandarin. 2) Spicy beef noodle soup is NOT Spicy - but decent flavors. It's salty - but properly pressured cooked tender beef. They are extremely skimpy on the beef, scallions, and vegetables. It's mostly all noodles - but you can pay an extra $1 for more vegetables to balance out the flavors. Do it. 3) There are two menus, but the Chinese one comes with pictures. Beware that there are no price tags on the Chinese menu. This honestly is strange - but the prices are similar to the other menu with items under $10. 4) Yes, there is Cashew Chicken, all white meat cost extra - and don't eat the rice b/c it is awful. 5)The owner is rude. The cashier is nice, clueless but nice. Might I add that I am 2nd generation Cantonese - American. I can speak Cantonese, and my Mandarin is passable - but I know I can yell back at this lady in Chinese, English, Spanish, whatever she gives me. I realize once I yelled at her in Chinese - she finally said thank you to me in English. This is the midwest - manners please! I'm not even this rude back in Boston and NY. 6) Nicer fast food interior than any Chinese restaurant in the area for a non-higher end establishment. 7) Drive thru window. I got broccoli beef from here today, and it was totally inedible. It smelled and tasted like cigarette smoke. The rest of our order was mediocre, and they no longer have crab Rangoon but cheese Rangoon? This place used to be decent 4 or 5 years ago. And it's really expensive for what it is. We saw one lone Asian guy pull in to the parking lot which left us with a glimmer of hope. 3/4 of the patrons inside were Asian so we knew it was the right place. *Ask for the Chinese menu. I am new to Springfield. The number of Asian style restaurants in this city is astounding! All seem to have Cashew Chicken as the special. Triple Eight's is just down the road from my new residence. The restaurant was full when I walked in at 2:00pm. Very clean, not overly decorated. Ordering is simple. Menu selection is provided on a board over the register. I did feel rushed to order, but I knew what I wanted prior to arriving. I ordered Sesame Chicken. The plate came with a side of fried rice and two rangoons. Only $4.89 for a nice serving. I added an egg roll for $1.19 extra. I could have done without the egg roll as there was plenty of food. My only complaint would be with service. The lady taking my order wasn't very pleasant, and when I asked her to repeat something she said, she proceeded to say it extremely slow as if I were ignorant. I can overlook this, however. It didn't seem intentional, maybe just a disconnect. I'll take just one star for that. The food is the star of the show though. If you don't mind a gruff service experience, then you will appreciate everything else about this little place. Simple menu and a great value. Oh, how sweetly fantastic! The food is affordable, the place is clean, and the taste! It's Springfield Asian food at it's cheapest best. That's not a bad thing--that's a very, very good thing. I've been living out in Buffalo, NY and I've missed Springfield Asian food. The rest of the country just doesn't get it and the food isn't as good. I've heard many times that this place is a Springfield favorite. I now work in the area so I decided to try it out. It's actually quite small inside. You order at the counter and then they bring you for food. I ordered the sweet & sour chicken. Although the menu does not say it, it comes with rice and 2 crab rangoons. My meal was less than $6 which was nice. The meal was fairly large. There was a decent amount of chicken, all small pieces. The sauce was almost cloying it was so sweet. The breading was alright, not golden enough for my liking though. Overall, the food was decent and service was quick. It's definitely not the best Springfield has to offer, it will fix that Chinese food craving! read more

Finally decided to try Triple Eight's today, since it's right on my way home, and I'm glad that I did! My Lady friend and I went in for a later lunch and the cashier was friendly and offered suggestions since I was being a little indecisive. My Lady Friend had the cashew chicken and was pretty pleased with her portion size and the (admittedly rather basic) crab rangoons. The sauce that they use for the Cashew Chicken is definitely better than most places in town, without question. I, on the other hand, had the beef noodle soup (per the cashier's suggestion) and was pleasantly surprised! The broth wasn't the most elevated ever, but overall the flavor was there and the beef was succulent. For the price these guys are going to be pretty hard to beat. I will definitely be back, and will be trying out their drive through to see if the quality holds up when you're not dining in! read more

They shorted us a crab Rangoon. I then opened my fried rice and found a short black hair. They weren't wearing hair nets. Another person in my party ordered cashew chicken and white meat only. You have to pay more for white meat. No white meat and the chicken was fried too long. The other person in our party found multiple hairs in their food. I called and the manager stated they would look at the hair to determine if they would give us a new dish. They also stated they were sure they put a crab Rangoon in there. They didn't offer compensation or an apology. We will never eat here again. They also didn't use gloves when handling food. read more

Went there today on the recommendation from a friend. I ordered the Kung Pow Chicken and hot and sour soup. I love both but not from Triple Eights. Both were disgusting and I could not eat. Even the rice was horrible. The crab Rangoon had been under the heat lamps way too long and one bite was enough. I talked to the owner about it and they said they were sorry but made no effort to remedy. But to be fair, I have tried no less than 10 Chinese places and they all suck. I moved to Nixa from Southern California 7 months ago where I think there is the one of the best mix of Asian foods anywhere in the world. I am a big fan of Chinese food. Not sweet gravy on fried chunks of chicken - but real Chinese food with peppers, garlic, bean paste, hoisin, etc. Spicy and flavorful and hopefully a little authentic. When I eat Chinese food in Springfield there are a few go to spots: Happy China for NY style Amer / Chinese Leongs for Springfield Style Amer / Chinese Hong Kong / Lucy's / Canton for comfort style SPFG Amer / Chinese Yans and TRIPLE EIGHTS for Chinese menus that serve 'real' Chinese food. At 888 - so far I have had Spicy Chicken (Extra Spicy) #813, Black Bean Chicken #905 and Sauteed String Bean #821. My son gets Chicken or Pork fried rice and it is the same as Hong Kong Inn or similar. The people are friendly to me so far - and remember me each time - but I tip well so you get what you pay for in that regard. As an aside - when did going to a restaurant necessitate people being super friendly? I am not going for companionship but for the food. Yell, scream, be a jerk, but give me a consistent meal that stands up to scrutiny from visit to visit and that is a restaurant I will frequent. read more
