We saw the sign for the Imperial Valley Desert Museum on our last trip and it sounded interesting...but I didn't really expect that much being so far away from any towns. We weren't sure we were even heading toward the museum since there was no sign and road was gravel and bumpy. But around the corner there was the terra cotta roof of the museum. No sign for the entrance either but they were glass doors so in we went. No one was at the desk but there were people looking at exhibits so we went in. The museum was not large but had areas with different exhibits and historic artifacts. The exhibits were very informative and well done. They have a beautiful collection of pottery by the Kumeyaay, a local First Nation tribe (who had bands that covered north from Escondido to near Ensenada and east from Yuma, AZ. to the Pacific Ocean. There is a movie that explains how the different bands lived that was so wonderful and informative that I would watch again. We were there about an hour and didn't see everything in detail. I really enjoyed learning about the Kumeyaay people and the desert area of Imperial County area. We will definitely come back to go through it again. I highly recommend making the stop to see the museum.

For years, this museum sat vacant. Finally enough money was raised to build out the interior. When it opened, I just had to go see it. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. For its size, I was surprised to see the number of displays they had and the quality of them. They also have a nice bookstore with trail maps and other informative desert literature. If you've driven on interstate 8 eight between San Diego and Arizona, I'm sure you have seen this museum. It has an outdoor trail with many native plants. There's also shaded sitting areas. If you have an extra 30 minutes to an hour, drop by the Imperial Valley desert museum. I'm sure you would enjoy it.

The tunnel has many local businesses, face painters, and a bar which sometimes is the place to see Godfrey the Magician performing feats of magic for kids of all ages. Then the buildings begin with an art building being first. Great to see what creations those in the community have put forth each year. Next is my favorite building with great art displays and police/college booths. Many years there are S.T.E.A.M. displays and creations and other years the focus is the community or livestock. This year you can often find Godfrey performing magic in front of a magical patriotic cow. So much fun. Further North is the commercial building full of vendors selling all types of goods and souvenirs. Beyond that is more carnival food booths and the carnival - run by Helm and Sons Amusement, a great company with amazing rides. The main stage always has great bands. Beyond that is the rock building full of gems and minerals. Beyond that is the livestock barns - nearly a dozen buildings full of animals and show arenas. Doc's handwashing station is now a building featuring science exhibits and big games. Finally, there is a building full of exhibits turned in by local children - artwork, Lego builds, etc. A smaller and very windy fair, but one worth visiting. Lots of ground entertainment - magician, juggler, balloon artist, musical act, stilt walkers, etc.

The grounds people were active during the day but friendly as well. They keep the grounds clean but the road is rough coming in. The rooms are outdoor and one side of the building faces a field where migrant workers are busting their butts. The gate that separates the workers from the parking lot of the resort is less than 50 feet, and perhaps less than 200 feet from your front door depending on your room. So I was able to watch them as I sat in my car to witness something I've only read about (R.I.P. Cesar Chavez). It helps you appreciate how you get your food....But the room had a balcony where I could tuck away my American guilt to find two chairs with a nice view of the golf course which is well-manicured. And I could see a few people playing golf. It was peaceful sitting out there. My room was spacious, clean, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, work desk with chair and lounge chair and a separate bench ottoman tucked under TV. The bathroom was surprisingly small. I can get to El Centro in less than 15 minutes for restaurants. There is a restaurant on-site but I did not eat there (and recommend just going into El Centro) And 7-11, a small market and Family Dollar is 3 miles away if you want snacks or bottled water. Overall, good stay. I'll return.

When we got in the room the pillows had brown hair all over them, the bedding did not look clean, and the room smelled like dank air. Only good thing about the room, was the toilet and sink where brand new. Thank God we only have to sleep here a couple hours before we continue our drive to San Diego. Stay as far as you can away from this hotel, it is not what it looks like online and is not any sort of resort or country club. Buyers beware.
