I had taken Tripper Bus years ago but more recently switched to other transportation options to get to NYC. However, after my recent trip on a Tripper Elite bus I'd highly consider using this company again. What I liked: the biggest plus, which accounts for the higher price of your ticket for this bus, is that one row of seats as two across the aisle, and the other row is of single seats. Since I was traveling by myself, it was a complete joy to sit alone and not have to fumble with a random seatmate's power cord or backpack on the floor. The seats are pretty plush and all have power outlets. They also give you a bottle of water when you get on board. The bus was also quite clean. The pickup stop in Arlington is on a quiet street tucked into Roslyn. It's Metro accessible or very easy to get dropped at via car. Dropping off is at Penn Station in midtown Manhattan. Fysa: we stopped in Maryland to switch bus drivers. I don't know if this is standard. We also made a 10-minute stop at the Delaware Welcome Center. I appreciated this, because it was nice to use the bathroom and grab a snack. But if you're in a super hurry to get to New York, it's something to consider for adding in time. My dislikes: the Wi-Fi wasn't working, even after the bus driver tried to reset it. That was a bummer since Wi-Fi is advertised as a perk of the bus. But it's not enough to keep me personally from booking again. read more

I'm honestly shocked that Tripper Bus/Gunther is still operating the way they do. For a company in the transportation industry, it can cost anywhere between $100 and $400 just to acquire a single new customer. That's a huge investment -- and yet, with the way they treated us, they're throwing that money away. We experienced delays, unprofessional staff, and unreliable service that forced us to dispute charges with our credit card company. Tripper bus have us the address to report to. We did in front of the building, others arrived, elderly and a couple with a son with special needs. The bus driver parked a block away watching all of us gather where we were directed to be. He didn't call us over, one if the others went to ask him and he said to go over to him. He did not assist with bags, in or out. As a matter of fact, when we arrived in NYC, we all had to get our own bags, which entailed me crawling into the bus to retrieve our bags. I was literally crawling in the under storage area. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars is the return trip on Tripper Elite driver was the complete opposite. Very attentive and helpful. If I were to compare Tripper to the various other bus services traveling between NYC and D.C. I'd have to say this one is middle of the road. The one perk about the service is every 6th trip is free -- which is nice if you use it often. Another plus is stopping at Bethesda and Rosslyn, though I wish they'd stop in Vienna instead. Do NOT use this company for the ELITE service!! They don't understand what it means to run a luxury bus service that is charging more than twice the going rate! The bus started 15 minutes late because the greeter decided to wait for 4 people who didn't show up. It stopped within an hour to change drivers, wasted 10 minutes in the process. 2 guys got on the bus. Unknown to us, one was a trainee - driving the bus. The other was the trainer. About 45 min later, the trainer announced they were stopping for a 15 minute "stretch" break. When I asked him if we were still reaching NYC at the advertised time of 12:30, he looked at me incredulously, and said, No, probably 1 pm I told him the bis had started late, and we could afford more delays, and he just shrugged. Came back from the break, and realized the trainee couldn't turn the bus on. More than half an hour later I convinced my husband to board another bus that had stopped for a break. The trainee driver told me he never stops for a break, but his trainer had insisted. He said he keeps the bus on, but his trainer told him to turn it off. It's one thing for delays to occur if there is traffic en route, but for a so called "luxury" service to be so lackadaisical, (trainer was down right rude), and have not regard for schedules, is inexcusable. If you are looking for a luxurious, cleanly bus, take the Tripper Bus and ask for Larry!!! We took a tripper bus from NYC to Bethesda Maryland and our driver was AWESOME!!! He had such a great personality and a great sense of humor! We forgot to grab our backpack off the bus when we got dropped off in Bethesda, so we called all night and through the morning and finally got through to an operator who gave us the driver's phone number. We called him and he gave us his personal address where he kept the bus with our back pack still there! We met him and he have us our luggage and I was so thrilled, I thought our luggage was gone forever. This was truely a Christmas Miracle!!!!!! I am so thankful, this bus is so nice and the driver was so sweet and caring, his name is Larry! Everyone needs to take this bus as a fast, reliable transportation service! read more

UPDATE (3/30/15): Their service has definitely improved! I had the same driver this past Friday and Sunday and he was timely, courteous and I felt very safe. I, unfortunately, did not catch his name, but my whole bus loved him. Note: make sure to examine your seat if you have multiple options. Some buses have seats with less legroom, backs that cannot move forward or backward, plugs can be between the two seats, against the wall or not available at all. Check for everything you may need. ORIGINAL (6/19/2012) --------------------------------------------------------- I've taken pretty much every discount DC/NY bus and Tripper Bus is one of the better ones. The only problem is that they are ALWAYS late. But, you can do this little bit of math to determine your exact schedules... just add 15 minutes to their departure times and add 30 minutes to their arrival times. They always stop at the halfway point, which is good or bad depending on how you feel about that. I kind of like it, but it's sort of a waste of time. Especially with their lateness. Their power outlets work maybe 60 percent of the time and their wireless is pretty much useless. Just use 3G. Had a great experience with this company even though my bus was cancelled due to heavy snow. The on-site agent who checks passengers in and communicates with the bus driver and company went above and beyond to help my daughter and I. Mr. Majid let us know very apologetically that our bus had been cancelled and asked about how we were getting home. We had been dropped off and didn't have a plan and really didn't want to bring anyone out in the worsening near-blizzard conditions. He kindly offered to take us home--even though we lived quite a bit from him. Traffic was extremely treacherous with cars and buses sliding on icy roads and getting stuck. Mr.. Majid was not only a kind gentleman, but also a very good driver. The 20 minute drive took over an hour and a half. Mr. Majid went above and beyond the call of duty and his chivalry reflects well on Tripper. Also, Tripper speedily refunded our tickets and were great to communicate with. Will ride with them again and look forward to seeing Mr. Majid! read more

Have you ever sat on a plane on Southwest airlines, head ducked down, hoping that nobody sits next to you? Imagine if someone taps you on the shoulder and says, hey, did you want a whole row to yourself? and as soon as you say yes'm they say, forget it... how bout a whole 10 rows? This company is pretty new, so I don't expect this to last, or they'll just close up shop. I'm sitting here again on my bus trip home from NYC. The trip up left me a little sour bc of the whole heating /cooling fiasco. But this time I wised up and sat at the very end of the bus after it seemed like another hot miserable trip. I got the whole back row to myself, wait, wait... I got the whole 15 last rows of this bus to myself. Damn, I forgot my headphones, so I can't jam to music... but there's nobody on this bus that is close enough to hear me bump the Backstreet Boys and N' Sync. Like omg. Crank up the music of the tinny speakers on my laptop. My laptop was about to die, but I just plugged this bad boy into their many power outlets. I'd definitely ride them again... oh, and I would book super early to get the cheap seats. If I change my mind, I can always just buy a full price ticket. It's that cheap. read more

I don't prefer traveling by bus though tripper bus is my go-to when I can't take Amtrak. I'm rating it 5-stars though because our driver Jerome on the Tripper Elite bus (11/21/18 6pm) was excellent. Jerome made it a very pleasant ride and kept all us passengers content and comfortable. He kept everyone up to date on traffic conditions and our ETA, and got a laugh out of us a couple times as well. He also drove smoothly and safely the entire time and avoided bad traffic (we beat the 5:30pm bus and pulled in right behind the 5pm). I'm often a cranky traveler and he definitely helped keep me in a good mood. read more

With the many options to travel from the DC region to NYC, I have found the Tripper Bus a good option. Busses are clean and rarely full to capacity. Drivers are usually friendly, yet on today's trip to Bethesda, the driver blocked out the two front rows. When I asked if anyone was sitting there, she said, "Yes". Of course I queried "Who?" And she asked if got sick...... where did that come from? As a paying customer, all seats should be available to passengers, and not a beverage stand or luggage compartment for the driver. Like all these busses, today's trip did not come with the advertised free WiFi, so yet again I needed to run my phone's hot spot so I could work on my commute. The bus departed at 10:23 and not the scheduled 10:30am, so now the driver is on the phone with dispatch as there were customers she left behind. As a passenger I am happy we got a early departure, yet of I was one of the paying customers who got left behind you know I would be Very upset! The driver's rationale was that she was informed yesterday that she had 13 passengers, well, I personally purchased my ticket this morning perhaps an hour before departure, so if she was told yesterday a count of 13, I would have made it 14, and who else knows if there was any other last minute purchases. So I recommend being on the bus no less than 15 minutes before departure. And a note to all city to city commuting busses, provide the WiFi you advertise, as the company who can accomplish that will get my business! read more

I took Tripper up to NYC this past weekend and back down with Bolt bus. Prior to this trip, I've taken Tripper upwards of half a dozen times. To be sure, Tripper tix (now $27 but used to be $25) are more expensive than Bolt's (the return trip on Bolt cost me just $19). But this review is about Tripper so I'll leave the subject of Bolt for the time being. During all my trips, I've found Tripper to reliably leave on time. When picking up passengers at Bethesda, you always encounter who I think is the Tripper owner, who collects your ticket print-outs and wishes you a good trip. He's passed out bottles of water all the times I've used Tripper too, which is really nice. Many Tripper seats have plastic bags hanging from the arm rests, which is nice so you can toss your trash there instead of stumbling to the front of a moving bus in search of the garbage bag. Whether they take a rest stop seems less predictable. A few times, the driver has asked the passengers whether they'd like to stop or not and other times, they just stop and give you the 15-minute warning about returning. This time, it was a latter, which was fine by me. A potty break at around the midpoint of a trip is well-appreciated so that I can avoid the bus bathroom later (though, on the times I've used it, it's been clean and has always had toilet paper). Everyone returned to the bus on time and we were ready to leave. Everyone except a family of four. Like the variability in whether Tripper takes a rest stop, there's also variability in how the drivers do a head count of the passengers at the rest stop, if at all. This particular driver did not choose to, which is fine, but he also relied on asking "Is anyone missing?" (or something to that effect) before starting to pull the bus away. I let him know that the family of four, who had been sitting behind me, was missing and he decided to wait a few minutes, during which time the wife and the daughter appeared from around the corner and headed over to the bus. The driver had seemed pretty courteous up to that point, but his tone now became rather angry and stern ("You can't hold up my bus!") and he proceeded to tell the wife she had 5 minutes to get her husband, otherwise they'd be left behind in Delaware. He seemed pretty literal about that, too. The wife had just gotten the daughter situated in her seat behind me when thankfully, the husband and the son exited from the rest stop area and came towards the bus. The driver proceeded to chastise them as well. I felt bad for them b/c after they got seated and the bus was finally on its way, the parents began discussing the situation in Spanish, which I happen to understand though I'm not a native speaker, and it was obvious there was a language barrier and that the parents didn't really understand when the driver had said "25 after" that he meant 25 minutes after 11:00 and not a 25-minute break. The father told the son he had to help him understand but seriously, the son looked like he was maybe 6 years old. The whole situation was unfortunate but I'm glad we made it to NYC without further incident. There isn't a terrible amount of leg room so my legs did get cramped during the trip. Overall, nice ride and convenient pick-up points (Rosslyn and Bethesda but Rosslyn's a lot more convenient for me, which is why I opt for Tripper over Bolt Bus, which picks up from Union Station). read more

This was not a "luxury" bus. As indicated by the attached photos, the seats were very small and uncomfortable, as my knees were slammed up against the back of the seat in front of me the entire ride. The bus itself was loud and rickety. All of the cup holders were broken, or not able to handle the weight of a small water bottle - again, evidenced by the photos. The seats and floors were filthy, covered in food crumbs and trash. At one point during the trip a small child next to us peed on the floor and seat. This bus took more than 7 hours to arrive, when 4.5 to 5 hours was advertised. There was no unusual traffic that accounted for this two-hour delay. The bus was NOT a direct, non-stop route. It stopped four times. Once to pick up other passengers in Maryland, which was not clearly advertised. The driver then took a detour to pick up "paperwork" off route, delaying us at least 30 minutes. On the third stop, the bus driver pulled off the highway, in to an empty parking lot and used the bathroom on the bus for 15 minutes. The fourth stop occurred outside NYC, around 8pm, already an hour past the estimated arrival time, where the driver went behind the bus for approximately 10 minutes to do who knows what. Was this to deliver the "paperwork," or maybe the drugs he picked up at the previous stop? Something very disturbing was going on, and no explanation was given. Knowing that we were already long behind schedule the bus driver endangered all of our lives by driving extremely fast along the NJ Turnpike, and managed at one point to drive through the plastic posts dividing a highway median to cross into another set of lanes. This was extremely dangerous and highly illegal. In reply to their comments - they are clearly liars, proven by the photos I uploaded. I can also prove that it took them 7 days to respond to us, not "immediately" as indicated in their response. We first emailed on May 17, and they didn't respond until May 24. No driver ever swapped, and they still don't rectify the other 3 stops or being more than 2 hours late. read more

As a frequent NYC to DMV traveler, I circulate between Tripper, Mega, and Greyhound. I like that Tripper gives a free ride for every 6. That is a great perk. The outlets and WiFi has become standard across carriers but the bottles of water are a nice touch to set them apart. I travel later in the evening when leaving Arlington so the limited hours restrict me to taking Tripper only on my trips out of NYC. In any event, I enjoy my rides each time! read more

This was my first trip taking tripper. I usually take vamoose because of the convenient pick up location in Arlington. I was excited to see another bus with a (cheaper) arlington pick up location. I had a very positive experience. We were able to wait on the bus at the Arlington location prior to departure. The pick up location is right next to an office building on a side street away from traffic. We received a free mini bottle of water when we boarded the bus. The ride was smooth. I appreciated that the drivers made and effort to avoid traffic and take alternate routes. The only negatives were that the bus on the ride up was SO hot, and the stop in Bethesda made the trip longer than anticipated. I wish tripper provided an option that skipped Bethesda. The drop off location in NYC has to be the best out there. Although the streets of NYC are always busy, tripper has a semi secluded area behind the post office near penn station. If you don't mind a bit longer trip, take tripper for the price and capable drivers. read more

1st time Tripper Bus traveler and LAST time Tripper Bus traveler....I'm very disappointed with yesterday's evening Tripper bus ride from Roslyn to NYC and will seriously consider NOT using Tripper Bus ever again. My experience was NOT as advertised on the Tripper Bus website...Here's The Good: Plenty of seats to choose from and a clean and stocked bathroom .....Now The Bad: The Bus was 30 mins. late in arriving at the designated pick up point in Roslyn (I really don't fault the Bus driver who doesn't control the pre-Thanksgiving holiday traffic exodus from Roslyn and he did try to make up time on the way to NYC even though we arrived in NYC over an hour later than scheduled)...in addition the arriving customers who were dropped off left their trash on the bus and didn't take it with them or stash it in the garbage bags provided by the driver...(resulting in trash and half empty water bottles rolling on the floor of the bus during the trip back to NYC) Sometime after leaving Roslyn our driver heroically fought his way through traffic, myself and a bunch of Georgetown U. students traveling for the holiday finally arrived at Bethesda MA for a pick up of more customers to NYC and the cursory bus ticket confirmation by a Tripper "employee" wearing a jacket with the Tripper Bus emblem on the back of the jacket...when he arrived at my seat I showed him my ticket confirmation which was on my cell phone...I enlarged it for him after he questioned the validity of my E-ticket confirmation...I explained to him that I had purchased the ticket through the GoTo bus site which directed me to the Tripper website where I purchased and confirmed ticket on line...The Tripper employee continued to question the validity of the ticket (which contrary to his statement it clearly was valid and confirmed in the E-ticket voucher I received) however he continued to interrogate me about the ticket and it's validity... I was particularly offended after I re-explained and offered to show him the money for the ticket had been taken from my bank account and clearly visible on my online bank summary...and he commented "I don't know about anything about that" which i found both offensive and dismissive. (Ladies and gentlemen for those of you who have read this review this far ... F.Y.I. I'm 65 years young, well educated, happily retired, have traveled to parts of the world and just recently spent a couple of wonderful days visiting with my son who lives and works in DC in the service of this great nation....so in summary this is not my 1st bus trip and in addition I'm fluent in the following languages English, Spanish and B.S.) I am very disappointed that I had to endure the treatment as here over a $30.00 ticket which I legitimately bought, paid for and confirmed electronically I have done with so many other normal travel transactions on buses, trains and planes in the past...(I think this sets a very bad example and image for the students and fellow customers on the bus who were puzzled and found it odd as to how I was being treated) So in summary I would advise anyone planning a trip using Tripper Bus in the future to consider my experience not as the norm, but if it's worth the hassle if you encounter the same experience as mine....I would also encourage Tripper to drop the hype and make it easier for customers by re-training your staff and improve your company's employee/customer relations services....Until then I will just move along and use another Bus service for my travel needs. The best part of this bus is that it is rarely full; therefore, you might get your own seat. On my way up, the bus they rented did not have reclined seats. Even though we arrived in NY on time, the second driver had road rage and honked the horn a LOT. My husband and I have pretty much tried all the bus services between DC and NYC. This is definitely our favorite! Getting on at Rosslyn or Bethesda is just much more peaceful than catching a bus in the hectic DC/Union Station. The staff is friendly and on time. The busses are clean, offer wifi & charging stations and serve a decent crowd. And you get free bottles of water. Recently I took Tripper bus as an alternative to taking BestBus/GoBus and I can confirm that I will never be taking Tripper bus again. If you live in Northern Virginia especially, there is honestly no need to take this from Rosslyn station. It is more convenient to catch the bus from Vienna or Manassas stations. So the only reason I took this bus is because of their repeatedly advertised claims of luxuriousness on their website. On their home page, you see phrases such as "Enjoy the comfort and convenience of first-class coach", "Deluxe Bus Travel", "Luxury reclining seats", "AFFORDABLE LUXURY TRAVEL DC TO NYC & NYC TO DC BUS ROUTES DAILY" which leads one to obviously assume that their normal buses offer such quality. This is because they fail to mention that all of these qualities they are advertising ONLY apply to a certain tier of buses called "Elite" buses. Convenient mishap. Thus I was very disappointed to have booked a ticket for a higher price than BestBus or GoBus and sit in a bus that is the exact same quality as BestBus or GoBus. They even failed to serve water bottles to customers like BestBus or GoBus do. read more

I cheated on Vamoose. You have to believe me, I didn't want to, but I had no choice, they were booked solid for all of last Friday, and Tripper Bus's Bethesda stop was just the tiniest bit closer to my office... Basically, TB is Vamoose minus about half the passengers and available pickup and dropoff times, plus a better website and wifi. I tend to be kind of last-minute with travel plans, so I didn't like that they require a credit card to reserve a spot, unlike the cash-only Moose. Took the tripper bus due to the abusive monopolistic pricing of amtrak which prices trains at fares higher than flying to florida. tripper bus is cheap, clean good and polite service by the staff, they leave on time from arlington and NY. its also close to the subway in both NYC and Arlington. 4 trips gets you one free ticket online. I can recommend this service for quick trips from NYC to Arlington or Bethesda. at a fair price. The Baja Fresh nearby offers delicous food that you can take on the bus from Arlington. After reading the other reviews, I am not sure that I could really add much more positive things to say about this new bus service. My partner and I went down to DC this past weekend and two round trip ticket cost us 20 dollars total! The bus on the way down to DC had maybe 15 people on it and the bus coming home had maybe 20-25. For their sake, I hope that it picks up because I would hate to see such a great bus service go out of business. the buses are new and every seat is equipped with outlets. The wifi isn't that great and didn't work with my iphone on the trip home, but worked on the way there. The drivers are very friendly and accommodating. We stopped for a short break on the way there, right after we crossed into delaware, but no stops on the way back. They are very punctual, having arrived and departed on time and they pick you up and drop you off EXACTLY where they say they do so there is no confusion, even though there are no signs, so just go to where it says and wait for the bus..it will be there. They even waited for someone! This is a perfect alternative to other expensive forms of transportation...or the notorious chinatown buses! read more

Was running pretty late, I called the phone number from the website at 6:00 on the dot (I had a 6pm departure time) and begged, pleaded, offered my first born child if they could call the bus driver and ask him to wait for me! The lady on the line was so friendly and nice, didn't make me feel stupid for asking a slightly ridiculous thing. The bus driver waited AND I don't have to give away my first born! It is very hard for me to write this review. The first few times I rode the bus it was ok. The internet goes in and out a lot and good luck traveling in comfort if someone has their chair back. The main reason why I had to give it only two stars after multiple rides is because of the drivers. I went to NYC on Dec. 26th and the weather was rainy the whole way up. We were SPEEDING by cards, literally going at least 80 mph. I honestly thought a few times we were going to crash. When we got into the Lincoln tunnel, we almost rear-ended another bus in front of us. The entire bus gasped yet that didn't stop the driver from slowing down. He also asked us if we wanted to stop half way yet only a few of us hear as he was so soft-spoken. The company has so much potential but I'd rather pay for the train. read more

By far the best company I have ridden with. There are pick up spots near both Bethesda and Rosslyn metro stations, and not near hectic Metro Center, which is great for suburban dwellers like me. Here's a list of all the positives: - Staff is very friendly - Since they just started the route and not many people know about it, usually get the row to yourself - Clean (even the bathroom) - Power outlet - Free Wifi - Cheap (pretty much same cost as Megabus and Bolt Bus) - Right on schedule - Drop off and pick up is right next to Penn Station in NYC Negatives: Haven't found any yet read more

For some random reason I wrote my last review for TripperBus in the NY location, so this is just a copy of my other review: I decided to pick Tripper Bus vs the other bus companies because of its pickup location in Arlington. I bought my ticket a day before I was supposed to leave for NY, and even though it was memorial day weekend, I could find spots at all times except for one. Due to construction the comapny has relocated its pickup location and therefore there are no signs that show you where the stop is. So, if you don't read the email confirmation carefully and have an address to look for, you'll prolly have doubts that you're standing in the right spot. Pros: -drivers seem friendly -free water bottle - internet connection was working fine (even if I got an email earlier saying it might not be available) -great pickup and dropoff locations in both Arlington and NY -made it from Arlnigton to NY in 3.5 hours. Seriously!! Some people complain that the seats aren't wide enough; I honestly didn't have a problem sitting comfortably, and on my way back, the bus stopped midway through and let the people going to Arlington move to another bus; didn't really mind that especially that I had like a million empty seats for myself and my bags :) Would def. use this company again! read more

Tripper Bus is a solid way to get to New York City, and I've been using them for years with varying amounts of satisfaction. Pros: - Departures from Rosslyn & Bethesda for the suburban folks - When the WIFI works, it's great, and you can charge your iPhone while you travel - Free bottled water, and friendly staff - Reliable pricing, and a free trip after 6 one-way trips - No fee and easy for changes to your itinerary if made more than 24 hours in advance - Reasonable scheduling Cons: - Some of the drivers are incredibly slow, some don't stop for bathroom breaks (although some take a poll of the riders, which is fair), some have been erratic/scary drivers - If you miss your bus, the next one may not be for an hour, as opposed to Megabus with its fleet of buses. - Like all the bus companies, when departing New York they're rarely on time Bottom Line: No matter what, unless you take Amtrak, getting to New York City on any day by road is painful, and Tripper Bus is less painful than others. read more

For years I've heard about the buses running back and forth from DC to NYC, but I had never experienced the ride for myself until this weekend. I was a tad overwhelmed by the number of bus companies to choose from, but ultimately settled on Tripper. I wanted wi fi, comfy (or as comfy as you're gonna get on a bus) seats and power for my gadgets and Tripper delivered on those fronts. The ride up on Friday took about 5 hours and 45 minutes, due to traffic and rain. Tack on two hours before that for my drive up to DC and that's quite a long trip. Thankfully, the ride back on Sunday wasn't quite as long, coming in at a little under 5 hours. I only used the wi fi on the way up and it worked fine for me. Probably wouldn't be ideal for streaming videos, but for checking email it did the job. As a total phone freak, I was happy to charge that baby on both legs of the trip (nothing worse than a dead phone if you're me). If you're looking for a cheap way to travel, and have time to spare without needing to be on a strict schedule, then Tripper's a great option. At about $25 each way, the affordability can hardly be beat. Would I take Tripper again if I were choosing a bus company? Sure. The drivers were nice and the seats were better than airplane seats. However, given that I live 1.5 hours south of NOVA (on the very best of traffic days), I'd probably prefer a different mode of transport next time. But hey, now I can say I've done it. read more
