I had a last minute work trip to India and was in desperate need of an outlet adapter and some mosquito repellant. My travel doctor recommended a specific brand of repellant (Ultrathon lotion) and TripQuipment was the only store I could find in the Portland area that carried it in the winter, they also seemed to be the only place that had the correct adapter. This would have been a double win, but the price was really steep. That being said, the cost of not getting malaria: priceless. If you are looking for travel gadgets, this is the place to go. They have something for everything. I'm not a big fan of gadgets, so I can't say I'd shop here too often, but if you are the type of person that brings a neck pillow on a flight you will love it here. In addition to the gadgets, they have some travel clothes. Their selection is very small, and the brands aren't great (mostly Ex officio). Their core competency here is luggage. I would say that about half of the store is dedicated to luggage. My luggage has a lifetime guarantee, so I am not in the market for anything new, but I'm sure their collection is excellent. If you find yourself in a state of pre-travel emergency, I would recommend calling here, they will more than likely have what you need...but be prepared to pay extra for it. read more

I visited looking for expert advice on luggage that would be as light as possible without sacrificing durability while also easy to manage through airports and other transit systems. That is exactly what I got -- several recommendations, pros and cons of each, plus time to explore the options with no hard sell. The salesperson even picked up on the physical reason I need light manageable bags and made a specific recommendation without making me feel self conscious or uncomfortable. Pricey? The first thing you should know is I found this place while vacationing in Maine, and since then I still buy all my stuff from them even though I live in Chicago. Everything arrives as promised right to my doorstep. I fly 3-5 days a week on average, so I am constantly in need of replacing items, or finding new and better items for my travel. There are two big things that impressed me about this place, and still do: 1. They have everyTHING for everyONE, no matter if you travel a lot or a little, a long way or a short way. 2. They give you honest opinions and straightforward answers on anything you ask. When you walk in you need to pause for a moment to take everything in. To the right of you are rows upon rows and a huge wall full of every possible travel accessory, I mean everything. From travel pack flat umbrellas to alarm clocks to wallets, money belts, ear plugs, digital travel luggage scales, and a huge section of TSA compliant things like how to get your liquids on the plane and not in the trash can at security. In front of you is a huge map of the world painted on the wall, I thought they would have little pushpins of where there customers had been but that is in the works I guess. In back of that is their little section where you can try on clothes AND where they take your passport photos too. Next to the left of that is there travel clothing section. Clothing for every type of travel, even travel underwear that you can wash in a sink and its anti microbial and you can wear it again on your next flight, and then a trek through the Sahara and then to church. In front of that is all their luggage; backpacks, carry ons, duffles, wheeled bags, hard cases soft cases and on and on. Now I am a firm believer that nice buildings don't sell things or make loyal customers, PEOPLE DO. Well this place is no exception. Sam and Kate know EVERYthing about everything in the store. Tell them a little bit about yourself and they will help you make some great picks. Long story short: Last year my luggage from Tripquipment flew over 200K miles domestically, and they look BRAND new. No problems. None. These are great people that obviously have a ton of experience in the business and are really dedicated to running a good honest business. + They know all there is to know about airline regulations, TSA regulations, carry on dimensions, everything you need to know to travel. So even if you live out of state you can give them a call and pick their brain. I really am happy to give them my business I think they deserve it but I am even more happy to tell everyone I know about this cool little spot in Maine where I buy all my travel stuff. read more

We were out for a Sunday drive when I asked my wife Alex if she'd like to see the great travel accessory store I had found in Falmouth, Maine. When we pulled in it was 11:45. We saw the sign on the door that said open at noon on Sundays...I don't blame 'em! Anyway, just as we turned to leave, Sam Hirsh, who owns the store with his wife Kate opened the door and greeted us and said to come right in! This store has everything you need for business or personal travel in one stop. More important, Kate and Sam know what they're talking about! I bought a wheeled briefcase there a few weeks ago and Kate talked me through the benefits and shortcomings of several models. She directed me to a case that was perfect...and on sale instead of a more expensive model; which she could easily have sold me. Next I was complaining about having to take my belt off going through security. My comment was, "Why does nobody make a nice leather belt with a plastic buckle?" Kate said they do, and she had several options! They know about carry-on regulations, sizes, how to streamline your packing and get you through security easily. I've driven past this little travel boutique a few times, and today my curiosity finally got the better of me. Since I travel about three months out of the year, I thought I would pop in to see what exactly this store carried. As you enter, the right half of the store is all high-end luggage, carry-ons and hand bags, while the middle is clothes, and the left are containers and travel gadgets, toiletry items, water bottles/mugs and electronic adapters of all kinds. While 90% of it seems to be business traveler or vacation-type gear, about 10% of it seems to be for hikers and backpackers. I was impressed with the range of gadgets they had. It was actually fun to poke around and test some of the items out! I never knew that they made towelettes in a 'Mentos' shape that you just drop into water to activate. Or that they had 'chewable' toothpaste so you could possibly get through TSA security without taking this particular liquid out. I was also very impressed with the level of attention that the proprietor was showing her customers. She certainly seemed to know (read: sell) her inventory very well. I overheard her giving 20 minutes worth of assistance to an elderly gentleman trying to pick out the perfect RFID-blocking wallet for his trip. I was not impressed with the price. I think savvier shoppers will be able to find most of these items on-line for about 25-50% less than the boutique markup found here. But let's face it - anyone who sets foot in this store probably isn't doing so because of the price - they're doing it to for the hometown convenience, the personalized customer service, and the recommendations. read more

I have shopped at this marvelous store many times and always see something new. I live in Falmouth and feel so lucky to have this store so close to me, my husband and I are out of the country twice a year, independent travel and cruises etc. The owners always find something new and interesting, last time it was an "Alka-Seltzer" sized compressed cloth in a packet of about 50.....just pour a water on it from your water bottle or a tap and voila instant wash cloth, sturdy too, and so handy to have one or two in your pocket. My next purchase is one of the lightweight suitcases they have, pricy...... but the older I get, the less I take and the lighter the suitcase the better. read more

I purchased a Roncato Cabin Luggage bag on the recommendation of the owner of TripQuipment. I went to his store asking specifically for a bag that would fit in the overhead bins of small regional jets. He assured me that this bag would fit. It does not, but only by perhaps a half inch - which is enough to mean that the overhead bin door cannot close and that the bag must be gate checked. I went back to the store the owner (who had recommended it) shrugged and said, well that's too bad - it'll fit under the seat, though. Yes, it does fit under the seat, but on small planes (and being 6 foot tall) this is a very very uncomfortable work around. It was an expensive, high-end bag that I purchased for a specific purpose. It did not do that job I needed. The owner and the shop failed to offer any solution or even sympathy for having sold me an item that did not serve the need I had clearly delineated. read more

After doing some research online, I already knew what backpack I wanted for a two week trip to Europe and found exactly what I was looking for here. I was hesitant to buy a backpack online because I wanted the fit to be right. So I decided to try this lovely travel shop in Falmouth. The owner, Sam, had the exact pack in stock and helped fit it on me, along with a few other packs for comparison. This store has everything you need to travel and Sam was incredibly helpful and friendly, even though I came in pretty close to closing time. They have everything and more. Plus the staff is so knowledgeable and will be happy to help with your trip. Exceptional store - locally owned by someone who has been in the luggage business for many years. I travel almost every week so I tend to go through luggage often, except for Briggs and Riley which I was excited to discover at this store while working in Maine. After speaking to the owner for a short period of time, it was clear that he knew the company and also other options for me to consider based on my use, not a price point or a special the store was running. We are thrilled to have this incredibly well stocked shop located so close to home! The high quality products are innovative and the owners have been consistently helpful. Following our most recent trip I requested a store credit for an item we purchased that we didn't enjoy using. The item worked fine, we just didn't like it. The owners agreed to issue a store credit even though I had already disposed of the original packaging and they would have to resell the product at half price. Let me start by saying I love gadgets! Anything that makes my life easier makes me happy. While enjoying a trip to Maine with my daughter to look at colleges I happened upon Tripquipment and I'm so glad I stopped in. This gem of a store was filled with fun accessories. I really was only planning to browse, but . . . wound up buying a number of great things that I don't know how I lived without. For starters, my daughter has a fear of bridges. However, thanks to the little ResQ Me glass breaker that I bought, my trip back to New York was a lot calmer. I also found the most wonderful travel holder for my iPhone. It is called Bondi and it reminds me of the Gumby toy I had as a child. It is made of the same bendable material and with Bondi gripping my phone I can now hang it from my rear view mirror, my purse, or my office computer monitor. I love it! Great luggage and even clothes that travel well fill this tasteful little store. And I loved how helpful the owners were, but without being pushy. Not enough time to explore all of the offerings but if we go back to Maine I would definitely stop back in. read more
