I finally got the chance on the Friday night before Halloween. Parking is available on the street and in the Norton Museum lot next to the cemetery for $6. The tour is given In Woodlawn Cemetery on Dixie Hwy. in West Palm Beach. Woodlawn was created in 1904 when Henry Flagler purchased 17 acres of a pineapple grove for burial grounds. The cemetery was very beautiful with trees and landscaping and it actually became a tourist attraction for the society ladies of the day. Henry Flagler actually intended to be buried here in the center circle but changed his mind when two associates attempted to incorporate Palm Beach behind his back so he instead chose to be buried in St. Augustine. In 1914 the cemetery was deeded to the city. Two more acres were purchased by the city in 1975 for the creation of the Woodlawn North Cemetery. This is the area where you will find the more recent burials. The entrance to the cemetery used to have an iron gate with the inscription "That which is so universal as death must be a blessing." When Dixie Hwy was widened the gate was lost and it was replaced with a cement arch that bears the quote although no one has been able to determine where it came from. Woodlawn is the final resting place of some of the pioneers of Palm Beach whose stories you get to hear on the tour as well as a mass burial site for the 96 victims of the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane. Over 10,000 people are buried here. The cemetery is actually made up of three cemeteries, Woodlawn Cemetery, the Jewish Cemetery, and Woodlawn Cemetery North. It is thought the name for the cemetery was taken from the famous Woodlawn Cemetery in New York. The Norton Museum of Art across the street used to be a 200 grave cemetery. The bodies were supposed to be moved across the street to Woodlawn but not everyone made the trip before the museum was built. Some of the notable burials at this cemetery include Charlie W. Pierce who was a barefoot mailman and the first postmaster of Boynton Beach, Charles Edward Merrill founder of Merill Lynch, and Joe Sakai who was one of the Japanese pineapple farmers in the colony that became Boca Raton. One of the sadder stories involved little Our Louise who was murdered by her mother's boarder. One of the more famous stories was about a gravesite for a couple whose bodies are not even buried here. Judge Chillingworth and his wife Marjorie. The last time the couple were seen alive was at a dinner party on the evening of June 14, 1955. The next day the couple were supposed to meet with a carpenter to build a playground for their grandchildren but they never showed up for the meeting. Inside the house there were bloodstains on the stairs. The police believed the Chillingworth's were kidnapped but the case went cold for 5 years. The mystery began to unravel in 1959 when the people involved began talking. Eventually it was learned that Floyd Holzapfel, a West Palm Beach garage attendant and a pool room operator named Bobby Lincoln murdered the couple in a plan masterminded by corrupt Municipal Judge Joseph A. Peel. Holzapfel eventually confessed the plot. Peel had been accepting bribes and offering protection to criminals. When Judge Chillingworth found out he started making plans to have Peel disbarred. To prevent that from happening Peel orchestrated the Chillingworth's murder. They couple were thrown off a boat in the ocean while professing their love to each other and their bodies were never found. The grand finale story was about Lena Clarke, the first woman postmaster of Palm Beach. After her brother's death by a snake bite Lena's grief stricken mind unraveled and she stole a significant amount of money through her job. She tried to make her older married lover take the blame and when he refused she murdered him. During her trial she became a national celebrity. Tickets for the monthly cemetery tour are available for free in Eventbrite October through April. Our hosts were Janet DeVries and Ginger Pederson who are Palm Beach historians and authors of several books about local history. The tour started at 7:30 and finished at 9:15. Be prepared to walk the entire time and bring a flashlight. The ground is uneven in places so wear comfortable shoes. As a a fan of history I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about West Palm Beach from these knowledgeable and entertaining ladies. I saw the graves of some people whose stories I knew and I learned some new stories as well. Although the event is free they do collect donations at the end of tour for the upkeep of the cemetery. There is also an upcoming day of service where volunteers will be cleaning the cemetery. If you enjoy history as much as I do, I highly recommend this tour.

Rob was extremely experienced and patient and made the whole event one of the most enjoyable things I have ever done. The landing was so smooth. I didn't even know we had landed. I would love to come back and fly sometime, but I live in California so unless I'm visiting my friend again, I won't be seeing you guys but hopefully one day soon.

I was a bit unsure of my balance, but Andrew, the owner, was great at demonstrating and explaining how to use the Segway. After a few tries, I was zipping around the parking lot getting the hang of things. My husband too had an easy time of it. Our 9 yr old, caught on like most kids do and was running circles around us. The young lady took us on a lovely tour of the park on paved pathways and even had us try it 'off road' on a flat meadow. We'll definitely be back next time we're in town.
