It has craftsman cottage details. The Rev. J. R. Cason moved to Florida in 1905. He founded the first Florida orphanage in Volusia County. He also served as a municipal judge and as the Chairman of the Palm Beach County Board of Public Instruction. Cason United Methodist Church is named after him. The Cason's son, J.R. Cason Jr. also came to Delray in 1905 and set up a medical practice while his brother in law James Love opened the communities first pharmacy in the post office. The city of Delray Beach and the Delray Beach Historical Society worked together to restore the cottage in 1988. The house is furnished in pieces that were either purchased or donated. The cottage is operated as a museum by the Delray Beach Historical Society. It is open November through April and tours are $5. Also located in the same area are two other historical homes that the Historical Society operates, a 1926 Florida bungalow and the Ethel Sterling Williams Archive & Learning Center in a 1908 farm house.

The African American citizens of Linton which was later changed it's name to Delray in 1901, petitioned for a school and teacher in 1894. In order to have their needs met officials required the community to supply a school building and to maintain the canal in a clean condition for the teacher to be able to travel. The school opened in a thatched hut on the east side of NW 5th Avenue, south of NW 1st Street. In 1907 the hut was replaced by a one room wooden school house which would later become Spady Elementary and Carver High Schools. BF James was a minister and the schools first principal. Frances Jane Bright was a teacher at the school. There is an educational display in the park that honors the history of this landmark. It provides historical background on Delray Beach. There is also a parking lot so that you can leave your vehicle while you tour historic 5th St. Across the street from the park is Donnies Place, a soul food restaurant and up the street is the Spady cultural museum.

Pickup was easy and convenient at a location near the Miami airport, and the clean, comfortable van made the drive across southern Florida along the Tamiami Trail enjoyable. The airboat ride was a highlight--we got up close and personal with alligators sunning themselves despite the chilly weather, which was unforgettable. The day ended with a phenomenal boat ride with an excellent captain on the west coast through and around the mangrove islands, where we saw dolphins, white pelicans, cormorants, and an impressive variety of other waterfowl. Overall, this was a highly educational and entertaining day from start to finish. A perfect way to experience the Everglades and Florida's unique ecosystems.
