Sunday morning. Northern Liberties. I'm wrestling my bike out of the trunk of my car myself with the intention of biking to the Manayunk Bridge via Spring Garden and the SRT and back, in time for an event at North Bowl later that afternoon. After struggling to get my front wheel on and secure the quick release for the first time ever, I was almost in tears about not being able to do it. Trophy was not only the closest bike shop to where I was standing, they were also open at 10am on a Sunday morning, which is unusual, in my experience. I called to confirm before walking my bike the three blocks to their store (the wheel was on well enough, I guess). The guy at the counter was really friendly. He immediately put my bike up on the rack, and complimented me on it (a newish Public C71). He explained how to position the wheel and make sure it was revolving freely, then how to tighten it just enough in order to get the quick release to a point where I could secure it. My fender had also bent slightly in the car, causing part of the wheel problem, so he bent that back for me too. He didn't talk down to me (I'm a woman with a step through framed bike, and while I'm not the most knowledgeable about bikes, I like having things explained to me as if I actually know what the parts are, which I do! This place has changed!!! I don't know what happened, all the staff that I had come to trust and rely on, are gone!!?? (Where have you gone??) The new staff here seem friendly, but they don't seem very experienced and or knowledgeable. Too bad. I love the location of this place, it's exactly between work and home. From now on though, I think I'll make the trip to Philadelphia Bikesmiths where the staff seem knowledgeable, (albeit super young,) and extremely helpful. read more

Got my bike here lat week upon moving to the city. I don't really know much about bikes. Staff was helpful and friendly. Advised me in picking out a bike that felt good, and it was on sale so I got a good deal. Sadly week later someone cut my lock and stole my bike. I came in for for helped and they were happy to advice me on steps I could take to try and find it. Ultimately I found it on craigslist and Bob helped me pick out a better bike lock. Couldn't reasonably ask for much more from the staff, I've felt well cared for here. read more

Trophy Garage is one of my favorite shops in the city. The staff are super helpful and won't pressure you for a sale. We brought our three year old Bromptons in for a tune-up and new Ergon grips, and were very pleased with the tune-up and repairs. Taylor fixed my rear light and my husband's gear shift. Now the bikes are cleaned, tuned, and polished, and they ride much better. The staff were friendly, helpful, and competent. It was worth driving a long way into Philadelphia, since we ride our bikes 3-4 times a week and Trophy Bikes knows how to service Bromptons. Walked in with a newly purchased Craig's list used but good condition bike. I was clear with the guy about my intentions- I bought a random unsized bike to see if i will even bike as much as I think I would before making a real bike purchase. I needed the break tightened. Before looking at a thing, the guy told me to resell the bike and put it towards one of his $400+ new bikes because "if i didn't have a good bike I'd be more likely to not like biking". True, probably, but my purchase was $55 and compared to his $400, not what I was there to do. He told me that my bike was maybe an inch too tall and even later accidentally reinforced that size wise, it was fine for practice. He then proceeded to offer me a $60 tune up. I clarified that my dad is a bike mechanic who would be in town within weeks to do most of work, but that tightening the loose break would need to be immediate so I could maybe get a few commuter miles in before my dad gets to it. He took out his pad of paper and started some list of a la carte items the bike would need- coming to $55. When he realized his $55 was under the $60 package price, he got awkward and started counting every latch on bike that would additionally cost $6-7 to tighten. He showed me what tightening a latch looked like- one mini insert and crack that maybe took 5 seconds if I'm rounding up dramatically. There are plenty of reputable local bike shops who will listen to your needs. This guy went straight dishonest and desperate used car salesman on me- short, more than middle aged, white hair, glasses. Not today trophy bikes! Rode a few blocks down spring garden to Phila Bikesmith and got brake tightened for $12. read more

I seem to have terrible luck with bikes. Ever since I've moved to Philadelphia I've been hit by three cars, wrecked due to pedestrians not paying attention, hit potholes, had to do an entire overhaul of my commuter bike twice, etc. Now in the midwest where I'm from, we had some kickass bike shops. And when I say kickass, I mean major brands (Trek, Specialized, Kona, Salsa, etc.) had flagship dealers near us. So I got accustomed to both excellent service and stellar craftsmanship. Coming to Philadelphia has been a different experience for me, in the bike shop world. I've had terrible luck with the majority of shops here including Trophy's other location. But we're no there to talk about that one. Now that I have my background laid out, I've had to overhaul my entire front end on my commuter bike, as well as redo the braking system, re-allign both wheels, and have several tuneups on my Specialized Roubaix. Trophy Bike Garage (not the other one) has been immensely helpful and always fairly accommodating of my needs. Adam and Peter are two great techs and I'm always glad when they're the ones working on my bikes. That being said, the reason I give four rather than five is that their repairs are fairly pricey. I need to learn how to true my own wheels so I can stop paying $17 a pop. In the old shops I went to it was $5. Regardless, solid shop, probably the best in Philadelphia. read more

I bought my Surly from the Trophy outpost in University City almost a year ago and have been very satisfied since. I went to the main shop on 2nd a few days ago to have new pedals put in and cleats fitted. The staff are excellent mechanics and very honest about what your bike "needs" vs. "should have done." They seem to just enjoy seeing happy people on bikes. Mike is a wealth of information - he will answer any question in detail and provide super useful tips for all levels of cyclist. Prices for labor and components are pretty competitive. read more

Just bought a Brompton at Trophy Bikes. The salesman, Mike, was incredibly knowledgeable, patient and just all around awesome. It was a very relaxed environment, no pressure for the sale, and I really enjoyed that. He was fun guy too, very cheerful, and not at all putting up a front. Had super up-cycled bags for the front - I'm all set for a better urban commute! I recommend Trophy Bikes and especially Mike without reservation!!! read more

Don't get it twisted this bike shop is dope super polite & super helpful. They're not snobby you just gotta speak up and be clear with what you want. They replaced handlebars for me and gave me great advice on maintenance. Preface, I bought a bike pump and that was it. However, it was a great experience. To be clear, I ride a road bike that costs a bit to maintain, so they know they can get me with a $50 bike pump. We head into the shop with flat bike tire in hand and state that my pump no longer works. He didn't try to sell me a pump - instead, he said that I could always just head to the shop and pump up my tires with their pump. Since I live a mile away, I felt it was worth it to invest in a pump of my own and they were knowledgable for what I needed. No attempt to have me buy more or anything after that - just rang me up and off we went. I'll definitely be back when my bike needs a tune-up! read more

what an awesome experience! I came in looking for some grips to replace the handbag gripping on my jogging stroller. The guy who helped me was SUPER NICE and even sold me some smaller stripes from the back as I wouldn't need very much for my stroller project. I cannot express how grateful I am, the smaller stripes worked great, and the whole trip took less than 5 minutes. I don't currently own a bike but if the biking bug ever bites me, I know where I'm going for all my bike needs! this is place is wonderful, will definitely be singing your praises to all the mamas around the neighborhood! read more

I've been going to this shop exclusively for almost two years now. Initially I had a really beat up piece of junk I'd bring in regularly. They were always nice and helpful and never complained about keeping up a bike that should have been scrapped long ago. Six months ago I bought a new Surly from them. As always, they were helpful and patient with me in the process. They really go the extra mile, even if it's something minor you may not think to ask them about. For example, the plastic covering on my shifter was slipping off. I more or less ignored it, but when I went in for a tune up, they glued it back in place, unprompted and for free. This bike shop is my go-to in the city and the only downside I can possibly think of is that it's a bit difficult to get your bike fixed here in the summer because it's so busy and for people who work M-F and use their bike for work it can be very tough to get a bike fixed over the weekend. Maybe this is due to not enough mechanics-- the ones they have there are very nice though and do a good job. read more

The only reason I give them minus a star is because I ordered a basket that didn't fit my bike, the girl was mistaken that it would but well...it didn't. I am a newcomer when it comes to bike riding; the staff at Trophy Bikes is awesome. Very good customer service, they fixed the front brakes on my wife's mountain bike in less than 15 minutes for a very good price. I visited 2 bike shops before stopping in at Trophy Bikes and I can truly say that this was the best one from the previous 2 bike stores that I visited in terms of customer service and price (Liberty Bell Bicycle, Bicycle Stable). Mike was the person who repaired the brakes, very cool guy, knowledgeable in his craft. The store was pretty busy, but that did not stop them from being able to get the job done on the spot, since it was a minor repair, but a repair that was keeping my wife from being able to use her bike. Recently purchased a Brompton folding bike working with Andrew. Could not have been more pleased with the test ride, purchase process and bicycle itself. Considered some other online Brompton dealers (NYCE mostly) and went with local bike shop. Pricing difference was negligible ($40 after adjusting for shipping and tax) and Andrew/Trophy really delivered as described below. Approx 18 months ago after becoming a train commuter, I researched folders so I could go multi-modal. I spoke with Trophy about Brompton versus Tern and opted for Tern based on huge price differential. At the time, Trophy advised, in a very low key/no pressure way, that I would probably be happier long term with the quality of the Brompton. The Tern having recently been stolen, I decided to take the "opportunity" to reconsider the Brompton. I went back to Trophy and had a great experience with the shop and process. Andrew very clearly went through the various models/options as well as two test rides so I could confirm gearing choices. After we narrowed it down almost final, I changed my mind on color. Andrew then spent some more time with his distributor to get me available options and colors. Once the bike came in, Andrew/Trophy then went the extra mile to have the bike brakes set up to my specs as the bike was shipped with them in reverse. (No fault of Brompton or Trophy - I got a bike that was in the shipment process prior to my order.) I'm sure it cost Trophy some extra labor, but they made it right. Throughout, Andrew was completely available and cheerful. Understanding this really isn't a Brompton product review, suffice it to say... the bike is fantastic. Only a few days on it, but the design and function are well worth the premium. Appears the cult-like status is deserved. In sum, great service and a great bike. Confirmation that LBS is way to go. read more

my favorite bike store in the city, hands down! i used to live real close to this shop but i don't anymore. i still make it a point to go here though when my bike needs a little TLC. really knowledgeable and friendly staff. they always make me feel welcome and care for my bike like it was one of their own. my only regret is not buying my bike from them but no matter, they don't care. they also carry plenty of bike gear to spend your hard earned dollars on -- t-shirts, bags from bailey bike works (i just ordered a new one), jerseys, shorts, lights, cables, locks... all the important stuff. stop on in, you know you wanna. read more

They quoted me a price and gave me a receipt for the cost. The next day, they doubled the price! This was for a simple repair for new gear shifters. Also, when I picked up my bike, the handles were half the size and too small for my hands. They didn't even mention it to me until I asked. I then had to pay even more money to have my handles fixed to the size they had previously been. Terrible service! I will not be returning there. read more

We bought used bikes a few months ago, and I've stopped by the shop 3 or 4 times for small fixes and general questions. I'm relatively handy but don't know much at all about bikes, and that has never been an issue here. Like other reviewers have said, lines tend to appear out of nowhere, but I've never waited more than 10 minutes to have someone help me out and they were always very helpful and down-to-earth. I would say that this place is just a pretty good bike shop, but my last trip really made this a 5 star place for me. I got into a little accident last week with my Schwinn Varsity and took it in, and the guy I was working with (wish I knew his name) actually was willing to say that there was another bike shop in town (Via Bicycle on S. 9th Street) that was better equipped to deal with the problem. Turning away business for the benefit of the customer is an amazing thing, and I'm proud to say I'll be a loyal Trophy customer until I leave Philly. Thanks for the help! read more

Stopped into TBG for the first time yesterday and was extremely impressed. Great staff willing to help out and patiently answer any questions I had. They had exactly what I was looking for in stock and didn't charge an arm and a leg for it. The hours are some of the best you will find in the city, and the shop is nice, spacious, and well kept. If you're not an absolute bicycle fiend, don't go here. The prices are the highest I've seen and the staff have never been terribly helpful.

Best thing about this place is they are open on Sundays for those inconvenient flats. Also, there's no minimum to use a card! I've been to Trophy Bikes 3 times with flat tires on two very different bikes, and their mechanics are friendly, knowledgeable and speedy. The service is great - don't feel like I'm trying to be "sold" on anything - and the prices are pretty standard for the city. Not too much of a selection on materials like lights, fenders, gloves, helmets, etc., but they definitely have everything a cyclist needs. I appreciate the vibe of the shop in that I don't feel stupid because I don't know what the different parts of a bicycle are called and I can't fix my own flats due to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. These guys are straight forward, down to earth and super cool. I was already planning to write a positive review when I walked out to my bike one day to find a bright green piece of paper wedged between my brake cable and frame. I am a relatively new bike person, so I was kind of intimidated to take my bike to the shop for the first time (especially considering how intimidating mechanics can be, and I even know a little bit about cars). But this and every time I've been to Trophy, I have felt welcomed and happily helped for a reasonable price. These guys cheered me on when I bought stuff to try to change my own tire, and then a different set of guys didn't laugh at me when I had to bring it in because I couldn't get the wheel on straight (to be fair, it's not one of the quick-release kinds). I tell them how great they are every time I go in, and I've referred many friends, but I figured it was high time to get them an internet shout-out. Thanks guys! read more

I went into Trophy Bikes as a total bicycle novice. Seriously, I knew just about nothing except for a little research on the interwebs. Jess helped me find the exact right bike for me. She answered all of my questions in a real and patient way and had a good sense of humor to boot. If you're new to bicycling, this is a great place to go. I have taken my bike to this place every year for a tune up. I remember when they were at their former location on the walk. However, I was not very impressed with the type of service I received this time. The day I dropped off my bike which had a flat I carried it in without the front tire on it. I removed it so it could fit in my car. This older guy says to me, "We will need the tire to inspect the bike". Thanks Captain Obvious! I went out to my car to return with the tire then he is overbearing and taking over for the bike tech. He is telling him what needs to be fixed with my bike. Then I leave and a few days later I get a call that my bike needs additional work. The call was from the older guy who checked me in and he called to say he missed a few things and there would be an additional charge and a delay. I never got a call that the bike was done so after a week I called them. The person who answered said we will work on it now and you can get it tonight after work. I arrive after work and the bike is brought out and placed in a bike rack inside the store while I check out. When I was done the guy and other employees did not offer to hold the door open, help me get the bike to my car etc. I get through the front door even with it trying to close on me and my bike. Next, once outside I see a meter lady giving me a $51. ticket. Then the guy who rang up my sales slip comes out to help me get my bike in my car and to inquire if I got a ticket. Really dude? Really Trophy Bike? Maybe you should be more customer oriented, friendly, helpful and also have a sign to let people know that they cannot load bikes out front of your shop. I just dropped over $100. In your shop and with my ticket another $51. to be treated like this...I think not! I went to trophy bikes for years but this was my last visit here. I swear since it relocated the customer service which brought me to them years ago went away. read more

I signed up for Yelp just to rate this bike shop. I started going here just because it was so convenient (I literally lived right above the shop on Liberties Walk). The first time I went in I was a little hesitant to ask questions because I was afraid of getting patronized for knowing very little about bikes and I was asking very general, probably stupid sounding questions. The answers I got from the dude were the complete opposite. He took the time to explain stuff to me and was sincere in the advice he offered. He wasn't just trying to make a quick sell or give me abbreviated answers just to get me out of the store even though he had plenty of repairs waiting to be worked on (he stopped what he was working on to come talk to me). Even though I didn't end up buying my bike here (I bought a used one on Craigslist), every purchase/repair/modification I have made to my bike since I bought it in July has been at Trophy Bikes. Every single employee that I have encountered while in the store has made me comfortable and welcome. They are all knowledgeable and passionate about bikes and they don't nail you up on the cross for being a bike dimwit. I checked out a few of the bike shops up on Girard Ave and the atmosphere wasn't quite the same. Trophy Bikes may not have the cheapest prices, but when you do make a purchase from these guys you know you are getting top notch service and these guys back every single product they stock. These guys are about quality, they purposefully do not stock cheap bikes or parts because they don't want customers walking away with something that's gonna break or fail and then call into question the store they bought it from. The price for labor/repair I believe is very fair, considering these guys put a lot of effort into making sure your bike is in the best condition it can be in. I've brought my bike in numerous times for repair and besides doing a great job on the repair I requested, they always tighten this, or adjust that, or tell me what I might need to do next time I bring it in. Bikes can be expensive, and anytime you are throwin around a good chunk change you want to be able to trust the service/products you are buying. I whole heartedly trust these dudes/dudets and would encourage anyone in Philadelphia who is thinking of buying a bike or who already has one, to check this place out read more
