We had already done American (burgers), Cuban and Peruvian so we decided to move away from the Americas and try Japanese on this occasion. We both love Japanese fare and I have been spoiled concerning my standard of quality for this style of food with six or seven dozen trips to Japan in my lifetime. A less ubiquitous genre such as this is genrally a risk in a smaller town (compared to Mexican and Italian, for example), but the reviews were quite good. Hence, we decided to give it a try. We liked the downtown location for this restaurant in this lovely little SC municipality. It was in a ground level space within a vintage 7-story building located at Main St. and Riley Ave. The space was moderate in size and naturally semi-segmented by the large supports common in older multi-story buildings. It was nicely arranged with orange and black coloring, predominantly high-top tables, a small bar and Japanese-themed wall hangings. One of the impressive things about our dining experience was the welcome we received. We felt as though they were genuinely glad we came in. We were seated immediately as it was not terribly busy. Our server, Courtney, attended to us right away with a cheerful, upbeat attitude. She was also efficient and timely. The menu had some good options. There were some favorites although there was definitely some "Americanzation" applied to the offerings to cater to local tastes. We opted for one of those Americanized modifications with a Chicken Roll. While not particularly authentic, it was still a tasty twist. We split this along with an Hibachi Shrimp Entree, which was quite good. I also tried the Plum Wine and was especially happy with it. In fact, I thought it was noteworthy with a lovely spiced taste. The final bill with food, drink, tax and tip was $37. At $18.50 each, we were happy with the value. I am not sure if we'll ever have the opportunity to return, but we'd be glad to do so if it arises.
