After our scheduled pick-up time, I went to the counter and they had the food in a bag sitting on near the prep area with another water. That would have been good to know that we needed to ask for our food. The Thai Chicken Salad (ordered without wontons) and dressing was good. I usually order the Chicken Pesto Flatbread and the salad was a nice alternative. My go-to smoothie is the Island Green, substitute Splenda, and add pea protein (versus whey, which is animal protein). I was super excited to try this place, they have good options on their menu. I ordered the Thai chicken wrap with sweet potatoes. Wrap was good but had two slices of chicken just on the top. They messed up my order of no scallions so I had to pick them out. The sweet potatoes were GROSS! They served the sweet potatoes to me that were past their sell by date. Had a sticker that it was prepared 12/26 and serve by 29th. I went on the 30th and got 4 day old prepared sweet potatoes. Nasty. Went to the counter to talk and no one came up so I just threw them away. Disgusting to serve food 4 days old and past the date on the sticker. But a PRO- yummy smoothie. My wife and I heard about Tropical Smoothie Cafe through Yelp. It's pretty new to the Kalamazoo area, so we thought we'd check it out. We are very glad we did! The environment was fun and refreshing, complete with bright colors and pictures of fruit on the walls. We spent quite a while looking over the menu before ordering. I ordered a cilantro lime taco and a Korean bbq taco for a fair price of about $6, and added a 24oz (huge) smoothie for about $4 more. They were advertising their new fall smoothies (I would've never thought of that), so I tried the spiced pear. My wife ordered the chicken pesto flatbread with the Beyond Meat meat substitute, since she's vegetarian. We were grateful that the cashier let us have a sample (albeit cold) of the Beyond Meat. The tacos were good. The Korean bbq was delicious. It was sweet and spicy, and I loved the kale and cucumber added to the top to add some refreshing coolness. The steak was good, nothing unbelievable, but good. I thought the fish taco was good as well. There was a sweet pineapple salsa on top, which was a strong flavor. If you don't like pineapple, you won't like this. But I love pineapple, so I enjoyed it. In combination with the cilantro sauce (creamy, probably mayonnaise-based), the fish flavor was pretty much gone. I enjoyed it, but wished there was a little more subtlety in the sauces. My wife wished the shells had been more special - they were very ordinary tortillas. Nevertheless, both these tacos were very tasty. My wife's chicken (in her case, Beyond Meat) pesto flatbread was very good. The Beyond Meat was impressively tasty! We looked up what it was made of, and it is not exactly tofu, but it is similar in texture and flavor. There is some chicken flavor on the Beyond Meat, and I thought it was quite good in the sandwich! My wife really liked the sandwich, and I agreed that it was delicious. Both the smoothies were good, and good size for the price. I thought both were a little too sweet, however. I've never had a smoothie with pear before, and I think the reason is probably because it was a little grainy. I would probably not get it again, although I enjoyed it as a fun fall treat. The Island Green smoothie that my wife had was very smooth and very good (although a little too sweet in my opinion). Overall, we really enjoyed our experience and our meal. This place used to be my most FAVORITE spot in Kalamazoo but for the last few months the smoothies haven't been turning out right. I've gotten smoothies with chunks of fruit, not blended throughly, I've gotten a few so thick that that it was able to go through the straw, had to leave it there for a couple hours, if I ask for an B12 enhancement or other supplement, I'd get a pill coming down the straw. For some reason, the smoothies are not the same anymore. Usually like this place the very best for an easy, quick meal. I've been to about half a dozen Tropical Smoothie locations. Normally we are welcomed, greeted with a smile, and given quick, expert service every time. I typically add a few fruits to my smoothie and get less ice, because it tastes so much better that way. It is clear the staff here isn't concerned with customer service or attention to detail. All of the employees seem to be lost or focused on the wrong tasks. They are switching from cleaning or counting money into prepping food without any gloves on--no hand washing taking place either! I was in a hurry and it took 10 minutes to order, without any line. We went into Tropical Smoothie Cafe with high expectations, and at first glance they were met. It appeared to be a clean environment with a health-conscious menu. The cheerful employees who waited on us added to our hopes. My husband and I were leaving town after a quick visit to see family and wanted something that meshed with our gluten-intolerant, vegan-if-possible dietary needs. We both opted for the Health Nut smoothie with pea protein added. It looked great and at first sip all seemed well. Then the strangely sweet, artificial taste set in. What had we ordered? The ingredients listed on the menu board were all innocuous and we didn't think the pea protein posed a problem. We held off drinking more smoothie until we looked up the ingredients online. Listed among their ingredients was SPLENDA! Splenda!!?! That's right; an artificial sweetener that has been compared to DDT since the ingredients are closer to that than actual food. Otherwise we would've turned around and asked for a genuinely healthful smoothie. I had that gag-inducing Splenda taste in my mouth until we got to South Bend. Ugh. What a giant disappointment! First of all, I would like to start out by saying that the people who work at this location are nice, just VERY poorly trained. I say this because I placed an order in store today at approximately 4:15 and did not receive my order until 4:50. This was not because they did not have enough staff, in fact, the lady who was behind the counter said they were full-staffed to another customer who asked for a refund because she waited close to an hour for part of her order that she placed on the mobile app. They took this long to make my order because they do not understand how to prioritize orders. Orders should be made in the order that they come in, not by what order was placed most recently. Soon after I placed my order, a rush of people came into the store and I began to notice that everyone that came in after me received their orders before mine (1 smoothie). In what world do orders that get placed after someone else's get made before the person who placed the order first??? Please please please learn how to prioritize which orders get made first because it was extremely frustrating waiting over a half an hour for a single smoothie and watching everyone that came in after me get theirs before mine when I also had a place to be. Perhaps I don't know enough about it, but I use Splenda all the time instead of the blue or pink packets. I first visited TSC a few weeks after it opened and have been back many, many times over the past two years, with many different people. Everyone loves it! The smoothies are delicious, with options for everyone, and flatbreads are ALL winners. My favorite combo for a lunch or dinner is a Paradise Point smoothie with a Cali Chicken Club or Baja Chicken flatbread. My husband's favorite is a Sunny Day smoothie (with spinach and kale added) and a chipotle chicken flatbread. Their salads are yummy as well. The decor is fun, and there's always a spot to sit. One of our favorite places for quick, healthy takeout or for a 3 hour smoothie date with my best friend. Definitely a great addition to Kalamazoo. read more
