I would actually give this lunch a zero. The salad was like a deli sandwich in a bowl but actually a sub would be better. I've been a customer here for more than 30 years. The "customer service" was horrible when I called back and was told that they don't refund or credit because "I didn't like it". I stopped in this afternoon for a quick lunch on the go and these folks were great! I was greeted and order was taken quickly. There is a nice dining area with many seats available. It seemed very cozy like you could curl up with a sub and a book and just have a nice afternoon if you had time for it. I ordered the Italian sub and had it warmed up. There is something about local food that draws you back until you become a regular coustomer. Willy's Sub has that quality . Ordered steak sub and roast beef turkey subs. Just add mayonnaise and mustard and you got one of the satisfying subs. Love this place's vibes . There is a retro game table to play , and there is a newspaper / magazines corner to enjoy reading with your meal. The cookies are giant and good. Just ask them to warm it up for you. Looking for a new lunch spot and found Wally's on my map. If I wasn't looking for it, I would've drove right on by. Outside, wouldn't think to stop. Inside is smallish. Go right when you enter the door to order. I got gyro. Pretty good, could use a little more meat but that's just a personal preference. The sauce was pretty good. Worst experience with a business. We ordered two sandwiches and when the server started adding onions to a sandwich, we said no onions. She said I'm making the sandwich the way they are supposed to be made and was extremely rude. We let her know we didn't need her to be bothered and we wanted our money back and would be on our way. She continued with her attitude and the other girl at the register in a hoodie said she had to call a manager to give us our money back. 5 minutes later, the rude server opened the register and gave us our money and we left. We will NEVER be going back. There was no reason for this behavior as the place was empty. If they were busy, I might give them a pass. I've been a fan of Wally's since the late 80s when my office was located on S. 9th Street. I literally ate there once a week and tried all their sandwiches. After my office moved to Portage, it wasn't as convenient so I didn't eat there much. A few weeks ago we were in the Oshtemo area and we both looked at each other when we saw the Wally's sign and stopped in for lunch. The section where you order hasn't changed at all. Loved that they still had the old Pac Man table. The dining side was just being converted over when my office moved so it was nice to see this addition. We each enjoyed our subs. Mine was the Sunday Turkey special and D had the Italian. We both sighed as we bit into our sandwiches. They are still the absolutely best subs. read more

Had Italian sub. It normally comes with mayo. I asked for no mayo to reduce calories and because mayo isn't Italian. Two bread choices. I got wheat. All tasted fine. Reason for only 3 stars: A good quality Italian sub should contain cappicola (peppered ham) and hard salami. This one had the expected pepperoni but regular ham and Genoa salami. Those are cheaper so I understand why proprietor uses them. Also, soft, mass produced bread. I'm not necessarily complaining: Just giving potential customers a heads up for what to expect on an Italian sub. Finally, in January, with temperature outside 43, dining area was cold. Wearing a wool jacket during my sit-down dining, but from the knees down I never warmed up. Hoped to hang out and use the free WiFi, but don't know how long I'll endure the chill. read more

You guys, Wally's Subs is fantastic! After all the cooking and cleanup and ordering out and paying big bucks to get a decent meal for take out, this was a refuge for us. Substantial subs and sandwiches, a plethora of choices and combinations, daily specials, friendly and patient staff, proper protocols in place and extremely fair prices. Decor is very late 80's but we are here for a good sandwich, not a side show. I wanted to get both specials for Friday (Medium tuna and drink, regular gyro and drink. Each around $6!). That sub was piled high and really hit the spot! And the gyro was extremely flavorful and surprising! We couldn't leave without my husband's beloved pastrami so we split that as well. (I was pretty hungry) Thank you for keeping the quality of your food a priority! We keep coming back for more and are continually impressed with your consistency. read more

Pleasantly surprised. When I think of sub-shops and sandwich shops I am usually comparing either larger chains to grocery store deli' in my experience. While I will say the price was comparable at Wallys the experience was superb over the others. Bottom line, these people are not cutting corners anywhere; from freshly cutting my meat before, to piling it high and thick and no extra cost, event the big chains cannot compare with the sheer quantity. The vegetables were all crisp and fresh and the bread was super tasty. I was impressed to learn that they have about 70 sandwich options already on the menu and I am sure if they didn't have you liking you could "make your own". :-) Beyond that they had a great selection of chips, cookies and drinks, from glass bottles to plastic options. The staff was very friendly and hard working. The location is great, and the place is bigger than I expected. You could definitely fit a good amount of people in this place. When we get the desire to come up to Kalamazoo from Lawton, we seemingly always take Red Arrow Highway because it turns into Stadium at the county line, and it was a straight-shot to Western without having to go fight through the traffic beast that was and is Westnedge during daytime but especially at rush hours. We passed this place for years, trip after trip, even through my four years at Western. Finally, though, we were heading back after a fun day in Kalamazoo and decided that we'd stop and get some sandwiches to take home and finally try this place. First off, getting into this place? It's a pain in the rump to get into, especially in the dark, and we had just as bad of a time getting out of it. I wish they had a better driveway... We got inside, and well... it's obvious this place has seen much, much better days. There were overhead lights out, and the place just had that, well... comfortably lived-in feeling. There was a bit of stuff on the floor, too. I mean, yes, it's like a half-hour until closing, and the staff is just standing around- maybe get your sweeping done while you wait? I will give this place perks on something- an honest-to-Iwata tabletop version of Ms. Pac-Man, dating from 1981. You don't see these still in working condition that often- and it still had a credit on it, so I was able to burn off some of the time we spent waiting for our sandwiches. (It turns out that I still stink at most anything Pac-Man, though. I didn't even break 5,000.) As for what we ordered... I got a large steak sub- I thought that it meant it would have hunks of actual steak meat on it, not shaved beef covered with cheddar, hunks of bell peppers and onions, and a slight dousing of A1. We got a few other sandwiches, too- turkey and roast beef with banana peppers... we think? We think that because when it came right down to it... those sandwiches just really weren't much to remember. I mean, they were edible, yes, and made for a good dinner, but... nothing about them really sticks out, to be quite honest. Not even for my sister, for me, or anyone else we got a sub for. If you get a sandwich here, you'll get filled up, and the sandwich is okay, but... really, that's all this place is, in the end- okay. Maybe our palates are just different sandwich-wise, but I don't think we'll be back to this place now that we've sated our curiosity. 3/5. Expect a decent meal, if not a memorable one. read more

The two people there working at the time didn't seem bothered or tired despite arriving hour before close. They knew their menu and offered great service. The food was good. I have been a customer of this establishment for over 30 years and it has never disappointed me until now. In years past the sandwiches were huge. You could order a large and it would feed you for lunch and there would be enough left over for dinner. I have not been there for almost two years because of the Coronavirus situation but during my first vist back I was sorely disappointed. The prices were the same if not slightly higher and the sandwiches were half the size. The big roll/bun was now the size of a bratwurst bun and the huge portions meat and cheese have been reduced to just slightly larger than Subway. Definitely not the same place. My husband got a roast beef sandwich, and I got the steak sandwich to try something different from my standard "club sandwich". I have to admit, I did not care for their take on a steak sandwich, but I have tried many other sandwiches there in the 30 years and this was the first time I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting chunks of steak meat rather than sliced steak meat, and I was expecting carmalized onions versus raw onions. I guess I should have asked more questions or realized I was at a sub shop not a restaurant. Unlike many places, they are very generous with the meat! First time being here, decided to venture out during Covid and try new restaurants to support. I ordered an Italian sub 7" sub and a steak 7" sub. The 7" is considered a medium. I'm surprised I was full off of the 7" because I can usually finish a foot long at subway. The meat slices are thicker, so this could be a reason. The bread was airy and pleasant. I came here for the first time in years. They have great basic subs at a good price. Basic but still lots of options for your meat and veg. And wheat bread! I will come here instead of a chain restaurant every time. The decor is old school but not worn out. And with a working pac man machine this is a great little sub shop stuck in time. I always get the number 19 and I've never once been disappointed. I've always gotten it at top quality. Every ingredient is fresh and never tastes dated. I introduced my girlfriend to it and its one of her favorites now. As for service, they're usually super friendly and one of the workers even tries his best to remember names and orders so you can get a swift order. The vibe in the restaurant is pretty classic. They keep it basic but not too dull. No complaints here. Prices seem fair and if you compare it to other sandwich shops, it's not far off, but what you may pay extra or less doesn't change the high quality! Always worth what you pay for. Wally's is a weekly visit for me. The first time I visited, I made the mistake of imposing my expectations on their menu, and I ended up disappointed. When I started a search for a new lunch spot between KVCC and town, I figured they were worth a second chance. This time I let them tell me what I want (they've got a sign that says "Try our Italian Sub!"), and I've been a devotee ever since. Wally's isn't fancy-pants, gourmet food -- it's real-people food for a real-people clientele. Free range quail confit and organic cress on ciabatta with truffle aioli? No. Ham and cheese on wheat? Yes. I've explored their menu only a bit, because I keep coming back to their Italian sub (on white bread, with hot peppers). I wouldn't change a thing about it, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. I should also mention that the staff are startlingly efficient. They've got the order taking-and-recording system down to a science. I'm a regular now, so they know my order, but before I was I rattled off my order as quick as I could ("large Italian on white with everything, add hot peppers, cold, to go") and they didn't miss a thing. Whenever I tell people I'm a regular at Wally's, they say "Oh, that place on Stadium? I've driven past it a hundred times but I've never been in." I tell them to stop driving past. Horrible customer service! I only have 30 minutes for my lunch and they made me the wrong sandwich (bologna and cheese instead of chicken salad). Those things happen in the restaurant world. It was the way that I was treated that was so incredibly inconceivable! Upon calling back the rude order taker was again rude. Upon going to pick up the corrected sandwich (because they can't seem to deliver after 2 pm which they say is because of staffing issues, but it has been that way for years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). I called at 2:06 pm with the wrong sandwich...really????????????????????? When I got there the staffer looked right at me and said "Is it really that big of an issue" Maybe someday when you have a big girl job you will undersand.
