I mailed my uber-expensive lace jacket (that I loved, but had sun bleach damage) to the company on Nov. 2, 2017. I received the jacket back on Aug. 29, 2018. Unfortunately, I had chosen an uncommon dye color (mink), and so it took a long time to process my jacket. Am I mad? Not at all! The jacket was returned in perfect, non-sunbleached condition. I have been having True Color dye my clothes for about 16 years now, since the owner had her business in Santa Cruz. I have always been happy! I now send my clothes to her in Oregon! I just recently got back a tank top that had grease stains on it, and it now looks brand new; a pair of shorts that were faded to no color at all and are now a rich brown; and a pair of beloved white sweats that shouldn't have been white for dog walks on the beach!! True Color has always done a great job. The only negative is that sometimes I have to wait a long time for a color I particularly like to come round. I would give them a zero if I could. She held our fabric for 3 months, the first excuse was that due to fashion week the dyer was busy with fashion week dyeing. She never reached out to us, I had to call her to ask about my material after she promised it in 5 weeks. Then 2 weeks later the excuse was that the dyer dud t want to risk the job. For three months of delay she offered us $20.00, total joke. Poor customer service and lousy excuses. read more

I sent a sun-faded sofa slipcover to True Color and the results are fantastic! It was clearly explained to me that there could be a long wait due to the wait for enough of that color request, and it did take about 2 and a half months. Sherry was wonderful on the phone explaining the process and the possibility that due to the cotton material, the slip cover could shrink. Tired of old clothing? Get it dyed at True Color! Once upon a time, I had three shirts and one pair of jeans (green... what was I thinking?) which had awkward stains or colors and wasn't wearing at all -- that is, until I discovered Sherry Smilo's local dyeing service! You can choose pretty much any color you please (they have samples on the website), although I just decided to go for the always reliable and classy black, which was apparently an excellent call, as it also covers bleach stains (!) and looks amazing. Warning: Sometimes the stitches don't get dyed, if they're made of different material or fabric than the rest of the item, and shrinking may occur (due to hot laundering & drying), as they duly caution you when you place an order. Essentially, you go on their website, print and fill out an order form, place it with your clothes in a package, and ship it off to them. They'll contact you upon receipt to go over your order (I got impatient and called myself shortly after sending it out, but I'm assuming they would've contacted me soon after). They calculate the cost based on number of items, dye and weight, and they send you a bill. After you've paid (by cheque), they proceed to dye and send your "new" clothing back within two to three weeks. Et voila! Very inexpensive for great results. They're local, they're kind, and they know how to dye. Absolutely worth it! read more

I only dye black. I used two other services to dye before and they are much more expensive per item. True Color dyes by weight. The turn around time is a bit longer but its much more worth it to me to wait than to pay a ridiculous price. So far I have done two batches of black and all the results are great! Alot of my older black color items are faded and dying them has revived them. Also most of the clothes i found in my closet i never wear.. but now that i dyed them, i wear them all the time. read more

I tend to keep my clothes a long time if they fit well. I have salvaged many items of clothing that I otherwise would have tossed or replaced by sending them to True Color Fabric Dyeing. Mostly I've dyed tee shirts and cotton chef pants. Once I had silk blouse dyed purple because the original navy dye had faded unevenly. Results have been excellent. Caveats: The turn around time for colors is longer than for black. As another reviewer pointed out, most thread is polyester, and it will keep its original color, so expect a top-stitched look. They say so all over the web site, and results really do vary based on the condition of the fabric and what it's been stained with before. If it's been exposed to bleach, dye it black, (or, TIE DYE IT by tying it up with self locking plastic straps!) read more

I would recommend never doing business with this company. Run a front page article and rent billboards to advertise as much. I have an article of clothing there since mid July. Promised in 6 to 8 weeks. Since the 8 week mark, I have called 3 times - 3 weeks apart - and the narrative is the same as a script. I'm wondering if I'll receive it by Christmas. read more

I sent in a dress that was difficult to dye bc it was from the 40s and a little fragile. The pattern on it had a lot of white and pink. I wanted it to be all black. Sherry explained that it was at my own risk, and the process of payment, dyeing and return would take two months or more. The dress came out perfectly. It's jet black and I love it! I know this took so much skill and care. And the fee was so reasonable. I'm definitely gonna send in more clothes! read more

You will be making a huge mistake if you decide to do business with this company. Please read and re-read the negative reviews posted here. The owner of the business LOST the slipcover that covers the frame of one of the pieces of my expensive, discontinued Pottery Barn sectional sofa! Please refer to my attached photo! Since the sofa has been discontinued there was no possibility of replacing the slipcover. When I told the business owner that the company was responsible for replacing my sofa, she responded by sending me a check for $450 which does not come near the cost of purchasing a new Pottery Barn sectional sofa, which retails for $4000 at a minimum. She did not even offer to refund the money I paid to have the slipcovers dyed! After reaching out a second time with the hope of amicably resolving the dispute with the owner, with no response, I filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the Oregon Department of Justice, again with no resolution, other than the satisfaction that True Color Fabric Dyeing will now have a standing complaint on file with the Better Business Bureau. Small Claims Court was not an option for me since I live in Massachusetts and the business is in Oregon, so I am left with a ruined sofa with no recourse. I cannot emphasize enough, unless you want your property lost or destroyed, do not do business with this company... You will be making a serious mistake. read more

Beware deeply unethical company. STAY AWAY Sent them my sofa covers. I asked them to dye my sofa. They asked me to do a test to make sure that things would go well. They said that my tests proved that things should go well but that they could not guarantee that the color would be perfect. Well the color was fine. But the cover disintegrated in their process. They said it was due to poor stitched seams , really the covers actually disintegrated. The fabric was not compatible with their process and they did not spot this in their tests! I asked that they show some accountability. A token would have satisfied me but they told me that they are not responsible and refused any accountability. Every company seems to hide behind a blanket legal statement refusing any responsibility. Yet verbally they promise the world. STAY AWAY from this company. I now have a $6000 sofa with no covers. read more

I was searching all over the internet looking for companies that dye clothing. I'm one of those types that have that favorite pair of jeans/slacks, it's so difficult to find something similar and part ways with your favorite pair. I had 2 pairs of my black slacks dyed.... and they look so good. I'm gonna be sending one of the pairs back for a second dye, because I have worn them plenty! They were dyed September of last year. I will be trying to get my jeans dyed through Sherry (owner). She is super sweet! The prices are very affordable. For one pair of pants, it costs me $21 including the shipping back to me... you do have to pay shipping to get to Sherry. But it's so worth it! This is a negative review for True Color Fabric Dyeing. I sent in a Pottery Barn slipcover in early October after speaking with business owner Sherry Smilo in advance about my needs. My request was to have the slipcover dyed back to the original color (it had faded but was in otherwise good condition) to be completed in advance of the holidays as I had company coming. I followed Sherry's instructions, filled out her form, sent via Fed Ex, and prepaid for the service. She assured me she could do it. Long story short, Thanksgiving came and went and Christmas was approaching. I called Sherry multiple times and each time she asked again what item I was calling about, promised to look into it, but ultimately did not reply, or was not able to provide any information on when the service would be complete. Finally after I expressed frustration and concern about her ability to meet my holiday deadline, she told me that she is not a dyer and nowhere on her website does she claim to be one. She told me that she sends the items she receives to the dyer. She explained that the dyer she uses is a commercial dyer and that they fit in her small jobs between large commercial dying jobs and that there is no way for her to tell when an item might be done. After going back and forth, with no resolution, she ultimately mailed my slipcover back to me without notice and without having dyed it, after having it for two months, and left me high and dry with no option to go elsewhere in time for the Christmas holiday. She also included with my slipcover return an unpleasant note, that stated that she was refusing my order because I was "raising my voice, threatening and harassing her staff". To be clear, this is completely false -- I am a mom with kids who were listening to the conversation, the only thing I did was to persistently follow up and insist that she provide information on the status of my order, as any reliable business would do. Also I did not speak with any "staff", only Sherry directly. The good news is that she did refund my money as well as return ship fee. The bad news is that I was out the shipping fee to send the item to her originally, the time and aggravation of the 2 month process, and did not have the slipcover in time for the holidays. read more
