There are courtyards and patios, even a screened in porch is available for residents and families. It has been refreshing to experience a facility that is attractive with attractive caregivers inside as well. I've lived in this area for decades, and this facility has always been named NHC. The fact that it has never changed hands has meant a consistently good reputation throughout the community. While no facility is perfect, they do seem to strive for perfection. My mother moved into the then brand new Brandon Wilde. She loved her apartment and found a "best…read morefriend" she was with daily and that all made me very happy that she was so happy there. The place was beautiful and I thought she would have the life care they promised so it was a win for her and me until the truth came out. I did find it annoying that when a light bulb blew it would be replaced with a lower wattage bulb giving less light so I would replace the replacement with a higher wattage bulb and wondered if the electric bill was more than they expected hence the lower wattage. But that was a minor correctable problem. Things hit the old fan when my mother must have had a mini stroke leaving her confused and she was not allowed to go back to her apartment. So OK, that happens but instead of moving her to the next step of supervised care she was moved to nursing where she was miserable and afraid of her room mate. I expressed that but she still remained in the same room. They told me she wasn't eating and I wondered how hard they were trying to feed her. I was told that the middle or supervised living unit was full then learned that they were taking people from outside of Brandon Wilde for the extra income. So much for buying in for life care. At the time I had my hands full with a life partner that said they wanted to go back to Connecticut otherwise I would have sought legal advice to address the broken promise of three levels of care promised at Brandon Wilde. I pulled my mother out of there and she lived with us for a while in SC until the move. My mom had been in diapers at Brandon Wilde supposedly because she said she was constipated and they were giving her a laxative but with us I was able to get her to eat and no more diapers and she was using the bathroom normally. We all went back to CT where my mother lived with us happily and soon recovered to a degree where she was quite functional but not able to live alone or independently. A few years later when she must have had another mini stroke and then she needed nursing because her brain told her she could no longer walk. All in all it was a heartbreaking time because my mom loved her apartment and cried when she couldn't return to it and she was so miserable in nursing. I don't know if things have changed there but I would make it a point to get an iron clad guarantee that a full three levels of care will be offered so nobody ever has to go from independent living to nursing when there is no need for that drastic a move. I would also say to checkout the intermediate level of care as my recollection recalls that I was never given a full tour and it seemed minimal to me especially when I asked and was told that mom could only have one piece of small furniture she had in her apartment. Not seeing it all was my mistake but my impression was that it wasn't that different than the nursing section. The place was beautiful, new and had enough to enjoy but perhaps not that well organized back then so I'm just saying to use due diligence, ask questions and tour the other areas where your loved one could end up. Obviously this is just one review of my experience from around 1991 so take it as that. Just be sure you know what you will be getting now and when a loved one can no longer be safe without supervision.

Some of my favorite residents were put in situations I wouldn't force upon my own family. I have nothing against the nurses, they were stellar, especially Ms. Tonya. (if she's even still there). It had gotten progressively worse after the virus hit and quarantined residents would roam, touching surfaces, and cough on my coworkers and I. At the time new management had not done much for the safety of the residents or the workers (exceeding only to-go or delivery orders for foodservice (my dpt.) and hand sanitizer in the kitchen). Hopefully they have recently met the standard for the safety of their employees as well as the residents I had grown to love.

There were several other things the doctor said that were equally as horrible but I am putting all of that into a letter being sent to the Medical Board! COMPASSION AND EMPATHY SHOULD NOT BE OPTIONAL IN ONCOLOGY!!! An oncologist shouldn't tell a 56 year-year old to go home and die because there's no other option! CRUEL AND HORRIBLE!! I'm sure his entire staff would be mortified if they knew he also came into the room complaining about them to us (which is how he started the conversation...not with hello...complaining about the staff and their incompetence!) The residents are clean are well fed. I've visited several times during lunch and dinner time to feed my aunt and observed the dining hall, food prep and presentation ... all good. The reason for a 3 star rating is because some of the staff can be extremely rude, have awful attitudes, and also because most of the residents here are either elderly and/or incapacitated in some way they are not able to watch or secure their belongings. Things walk out of their rooms. Poof ... gone! We no longer give my aunt money nor anything super nice or of value. She and her roommate have told us that staff come into their room while they are asleep or away from their room and things disappear. Gone! This is not uncommon for these types of facilities but not good. Bottom line: I would recommend this facility because I have seen and smelled a lot worse! overall, I like this facility and the residents are clean, well fed, and appear "content".
