7:30 pm and very closed. Banner says now open 24 hrs though. Shrug. Very confused. Google has them listed as 24 hours as well.

Super friendly and welcoming during my 11 pm run to pick up 3 fairly random items. So happy to have a 24 hour option so close to home!

Hedlund's Hardware has to be one of Indy's weirdest little gems. Located in practically the perfect…read morespot on the corner of 62nd and Keystone with a Broad Ripple Avenue address, Hedlund's Hardware looks and feels like a blast from the past precisely because it really is a blast from the past. Established in 1935 by Claude and Mary Hedlund, Hedlund's was at first a General Store but now limits itself to a somewhat broad definition of hardware and a personality that practically defies explanation. I avoided Hedlund's for quite some time. I'm a wheelchair user and Hedlund's Hardware is one of those places that practically screams out "You're going to break me!" as I delicately wheel myself through the aisles (or the ones that are passable, a fact that will change from visit to visit). The truth is that some people will hate a place like Hedlund's. It's a chaotic, eclectic, and seemingly disorganized (It's actually fairly well organized) establishment in a world where we want big box convenience and 19-year-old Tommy pretending he knows everything there is to know about plumbing or house repairs. HINT: Tommy doesn't know. At Hedlund's, though, they do actually know stuff. Hedlund's is not a big box store. In fact, it's not even a particularly big store though it's much bigger than it appears from the outside. Hedlund's is not a Sullivan's Hardware, a nearby behemoth that is also local but is much bigger and more contemporary. Hedlund's is, at least in my view, a bit of a cultural icon. It remains in the Hedlund family and is locally owned. I have no idea if this is the original building, but it's definitely symbolic of the history of the area. As I noted, if you need true accessibility it's not likely to be found here. You can get in the doors (most days) as they're level to the ground. That said, Hedlund's packs stuff in here and aisle passage is hit-and-miss. However, folks are friendly, helpful, and actually knowledgeable here and it's worth it to at least visit the place even if you don't completely fall in love with it. It's a unique space, a unique hardware store, and sort of an outcast right between Lowe's and Sullivan's on Keystone yet it continues to be a beacon of sorts and I'm sure glad it's here.

And if they can't guess it, they get more players (store emploees) involved, until the mystery is solved and the proper tool or gadget guessed and found for you. I have always heeded their advice and they have not steered me wrong yet. So much better than those huge stores where you have to beg folks to help you and run around finding them, which can take a few miles. In this ACE store, you won't make it to the first aisle without someone greeting you and asking if you need help finding something. Kudos to this mom & pop store.

So then I asked them if they also had cotton candy and a pony and that's when I finally struck out. A real true-blue old hardware place like I like them. It's basically the Tardis inside. Looks like a standard Ace - but don't be fooled. Also, everyone is helpful and nice. A huge bonus. This is a bit of a drive for me but so worth it.
