I saw that this was voted to be a finalist for Oakland's best gym, but to me, having visited several gyms in the Bay Area, this should be the best gym period. Not only are the instructors friendly and intense, they also embrace the principle that you can always do a little more than you think. Allison greets me by my name, and there is a sense of community absent from most (if not all) the gyms I've been a part of. Online registering is a life-saver, the facilities are clean and well-stocked, and location is ideal. If you're ever curious, you should certainly visit and get a feel for the place! YES! Truve=love. I love everything about Truve. I am almost done with my 10-class pass and I have loved each class I've tried out. I travel a lot for work and wanted to make sure I would be able to get the most out of my membership when traveling. So when I called and spoke with the owner, Alison, she as very nice, informative and said bottom line, they want their clients to come back and value them. So I went in and tried a class. When I checked in for class Alison was with a client but saw me come in and asked if I was me- based on our convo earlier that day. She was super welcoming! Every time I go into Truve and she is there, she addresses me by my first name. Love that the owner makes a point to get to know everyone by their first name! I have tried the Spin class with Sheena and I loved the bikes. Sheena also took time to do some core work and roll out with us after class. The Barre class is another one of my favorites. I totally felt that workout in my lets/butt the next day and I loved it! The bootcamp classes have been great as well, wonderful workout that is always changing and challenging. Now the showers. AMAZING- there are only two but I have never had to wait for one. Truve isn't too crowded and I have gone in the morning, at lunch and after work. Due to the location there are a lot of folks that live in the area so I am assuming they just go home and shower. So back to the showers, they are super clean and everything is provide- at least in the women's shower. There is shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, body scrub, lotion, feminine products, razors, hair ties, hair driers, hair gel, i mean the list goes on! And they provide locks for you to use. I work in the area and this is the perfect, convenient gym for me. So far the trainers are all very welcoming as well as the clientele. After visiting Truve now about four or five times, it has become clear that the experience I wrote about previously is not the norm. The owner reached out to me the same day via phone and on Yelp to apologize for that experience, and the additional times I've returned for the kettlebell class and training have been great. Amazing family like studio, with some of the best instructors I have had. I use Truve when I work in the area, and cant say enough good things for the team. Classes are challenging but not intimidating, and there are many instructors that just want to see you succeed in whatever your fitness goal is. I would highly recommend the spin, fit camp and any other HOT they do... I have not done the reformers but its always busy so that is a good thing. I live in LA, the mecca of snobby gyms and pretentious fitness crazes, so when I travel to Oakland, I love visiting Truve because it's the antithesis of any over priced gym I attend while I'm home. At Truve, the facilities include state of the art equipment and the space is always spotless (no yucky sweat smell or stack of dirty towels anywhere!) The group classes are always really fun and a great work out. I love Luz's Spin/Core class, she always plays the best music and pushes you to work hard, and Power Yoga, which includes a healthy Vinyasa flow but also a meditative cool down to help you unwind from stress. I've also received massages at Truve from Morgan who is FABULOUS! She has magical hands and always gives me tips on how to strengthen my weak/sore areas. I would highly recommend this gym to anyone in Oakland and I wish they would open one in LA! read more

I love this facility for a number of reasons: It is easy for me to get there from work thanks to the free parking; it is always super clean; there is no additional membership fee - just pay-as-you-go classes, training or massage sessions; it is naturally-lit; the bathrooms are stocked with towels and all the toiletries and hygiene products one could need; free-weights galore! Even at peak times, this place does not get crowded. I work out with my trainer Jordan Smith here, who is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his job. He also referred me to Morgan McRae, the on-staff massage therapist, who is helping me significantly with my posture, alignment and staying injury and pain-free with all the working out and running I do. I work and travel a lot but I am always happy to take a respite at Truve to get a good work out or relaxing massage in. read more

I am so thankful to have found Truve! I recognized I needed to prioritize health amid a busy schedule, but I did not know where or how to start. I shopped around a few other gyms and studios, but once I stepped in Truve, I knew then where I needed to be. Truve offers multiple classes throughout the day, allowing for flexibility for different work schedules. And Truve offers membership holds for when you need to be out of town for extended periods of time. In short, Truve understands that its members live busy lives, and it provides plenty of supports. For someone at the beginning of their fitness journey, taking group fitness classes led by amazing instructors has taught me so much about my body. Even though the setting is in groups, instructors will still take the time to help you improve your form and technique. Their attention and care is impeccable. Their spirits unparalleled to keep you motivated! Also, it is impossible to get bored with working out (which I must admit has always been my downfall)! You have a variety of options to choose from: TRX, spin, yoga, HIIT, etc. You'll end every class feeling challenged and proud of your hard work! But, I would have to say what makes Truve stand out is the culture of community and accountability. So I've been to Truve 2 times, but it was my first time driving there about a month ago. The parking situation is confusing because the lot says that you need a permit to park, but Truve says it's free to park. There was no attendant on the parking premise, and I spent time looking for one to notify him that I would be going to Truve. I was worried about getting my car towed because Truve said to notify the attendant that I would be attending class. So I ended up paying 6 dollars because no one was there. Anyways I was 9 min late and the instructor would not let me into class. Because of this experience I am not returning. I would of been a repeat member because I really like their classes. After determining that the gym I was attending was lacking in so many things, I decided that being close to home could no longer be a criteria for staying. After considerable research (and taking advantage of free classes throughout the City), I landed at Truve. This is a great gym - in all aspects. It begins with Truve's caring and talented owner, Alison, whose high standards gets reflected in the warm and inviting workout space; and energetic, friendly, and competent instructors. Truve, centrally located in Uptown Oakland, has a variety of "quality" classes and appeals to a wide-range of fitness and age levels. While I have not yet had an opportunity to take all of the classes, spin and body conditioning are excellent. I should mention that patrons are equally friendly - now that is a rarity. This is no doubt due to the tone set by Alison. She is awesome and oversees a stellar operation. I have been taking yoga/barre classes with Andrea at Truve, it is the perfect way to get started getting fit again after a long time out of a fitness regime. The class is definitely challenging - there are many things I cannot do, but she always offers modifications and no one feels stupid for not being able to do something. It is all seen as a work in progress, so there is no judgement about where you are, but there is still a definite focus on progress, which seems to be a general MO for Truve as a whole. read more

Alison and the other instructors constantly challenge me and Truve's outdoor classes during COVID have become the highlight of my week. I started taking classes at Truve in January and instantly fell in love with the community there. The first time I showed up, Alison knew my name! I was recovering from a stress fracture, so mainly focused on spin classes. That's how I met my (now) amazing personal trainer, Jessica. She's made me hella strong and motivates me to be my best self every day. She gives me advice on nutrition and mindfulness. And her great sense of humor gets me through our 7am workouts! I never feel out of place at Truve. No one judges. No one tries to show off. This is the BEST gym ever. Amazing trainers and a very unique culture. I usually go to Boot camp with Jessica Sandow who brings some fun at 6 AM! I'm so grateful a friend told me about this gym! I've attended the following community classes: mat pilates, boot-camp, and body sculpting-- they were amazing. The bootcamp class was killer challenging, just the way I like my workouts! It'd be great if reps were more effectively implemented in the body sculpting class; I just personally think I'd get more burn out of the exercises if we went through each exercise in more reps (for some reason the class seemed a bit choppy, but that's just my personal take). I am not a gym person. I've gotten by on genetics and occasional runs around Lake Merritt. But now I have a membership at Truve. Why? - The group class instructors are welcoming and friendly - Andrea and Dee are strong women - and the variety of classes held throughout the day works with most schedules. - If you need to take it slow, there's a hatha/restorative yoga class, a stretching class, and a self-massage class, so you don't feel like you're wasting your money because you can't do another weighted squat. - The facilities are great; women's restroom is always stocked with lots of amenities. - Location is central, there's free parking, ask for details (duh), BART/public transit is close by, and it's walkable. - They have other services! Tinah is a great message therapist. - Lastly, they accommodate vacations. Allison adjusted my billing cycle when I was out for almost two weeks - how many gyms do that?! One thing: I would love if staff upped their music playlist game. Andre is probably the best at this. Maybe make some pre-made playlists for staff? In any case, this place is great! read more

I see my trainer Jordan Smith at Truve Fit. The space is airy, clean and has a friendly group of practitioners and instructors. I come in the early afternoon when there is little to no traffic, making a workout very tailored and challenging. There are plenty of different kinds of equipment, but I mostly stick to the squat racks and free weights. The showers are clean, have a variety of soaps and conditioners, day-use lockers are available and towels are plentiful. Truve is right along the Free "B" Shuttle route, which makes it easy to get here from pretty much anywhere in downtown Oakland. I usually bike, though, and there's always space on the racks out front. Truve provides a comfortable space for me to work directly with my trainer. There is no membership cost - I simply pay as I go. I have never tried any of the group classes here, but it's nice to know there are options: TRX, Spin, Pilates reformer and Yoga. Although I am mostly a lifter, I can see how Truve can fit to anyone's needs for a fitness facility. read more

I have been searching for the longest time for a gym that would satisfy my short attention span while still providing the kind of professional, knowledgeable trainers I (and my various injuries) need. Big corporate gyms have variety but they don't pay enough to hire the best trainers. Truve is the perfect balance. Allison, with whom I've been training, is terrific. She not only knows her stuff, but she has the gift of inspiration. Mary, the Pilates trainer, is also wonderful. And there are lots of classes to allow you to build a program that keeps you coming back. The bathrooms are impeccably clean with tons of products and nice fresh towels. I absolutely love this gym. Before I can talk about Truve, I have to talk about Alison, the owner of the gym. She is one impressive lady. In addition to starting her own business and offering FREE community classes in OAKLAND (my city), she also is involved in several different charities, including one she founded in Costa Rica. How could you not love a gym that is based on this amazing foundation. I started training with her one-on-one about a year ago and that quickly transitioned into taking the other group fitness classes they offered. You will not find a more welcoming or supportive gym than Truve. One of my absolute favorite classes is the Monday night Tires Ropes and Bands class. The instructor, Soora, is another main reason I keep coming back to Truve. The class is hard, but fun! He also makes it a point to focus on form, which I greatly appreciate. My friends and I were prepping for a Spartan Super and this class was a staple in our training. Try at least one class here.. and I am pretty sure you will keep coming back. read more

Truve is THE BEST! It is my home away from home. I came to Truve at the most nonathletic point in my life. I was out of shape, had extra pounds, and my metabolism was seriously lagging. Finding Truve changed all that, and a lot more quickly than I expected. Truve is the only gym where I have been able to fulfill my personal gym-going attendance commitments, meet my fitness goals, achieve those goals, and then adjust them and keep going. I have gotten stronger and leaner over the past year and a half than I imagined I could, and I can now confidently say that I have established healthier, more fit habits and routines. Alison treats you like part of the family from day one. While I wince when she subs for a class I've signed up for, I always walk out feeling very accomplished after she pushed me to the next level I didn't know I had. I have taken just about every group fitness class Truve offers, and they are all exceptional. Fernando, Jessica, Andrea, and Dee all bring a different style of instruction to their various classes (30-20-10, TRX, Body Sculpting, TruveBarre, Lean Power Series, etc.) but the consistent factor with them all is the supportive environment they offer to push you beyond your limits to get stronger. They are all top-level instructors and you are sure to find a class at Truve that fits what you are looking for. I also love that I can park for free in the lot right next door, have clean showers to use if I need to run (back) to work or out, and can stay after my workout to get some body work done. Oh, and I can branch and take a Brazilian dance class if I'm inspired! I really appreciate what Truve has brought to the community and to my life. I can't recommend it enough. read more

Your first class is free, there are Community classes (free) and First Friday events for you to check out and new member offers that work. Truve offers more classes and more variety of classes than the big box gyms and the beauty of it is that the size of the classes are small enough that you don't have to fight for a spot and everyone is always friendly. Truve also offers lots of extras (parking, showers, lockers and even hairbands!) but it doesn't offer a treadmill so if that's what you are looking for, then look elsewhere! read more

I have been going to Truve for Pilates and have taken classes on different days and times so have had a chance to work with different trainers- and they have all been great. special shout out to Wendy Adler and Mary Cobb! I have never had a class be unexpectedly cancelled (and that can be so common at other places) Allison seems to know EVERY client by name. And I have had personal emails from her as well as the Pilates instructors following up on class experience, etc. The gym, shower/locker area, equipment all well maintained. I got a 60 min Prenatal massage from Amanda and loved it. She was careful and attentive to creating a comfortable environment and made sure all my aches and pains were attended to. Amazing gym, in the East Bay- owned by fitness guru Alison. I've been training here for two years with Fit Mom Dee (a motivating trainer whose passionate about her craft). My body with patiences and hard work has created incredible results. From the owner, Allison, who remembers everyone's names and does incredible things like free community classes, food drives, toy/clothing drives, etc, she is definitely committed to her Oakland community. To the teachers who are all so incredible. Love Amy's boot camp classes, spin is great, Fernando's lean power series destroyed me in a good way. AND my newest obsession are Andrea's bar classes -- so stinking good. I hadn't done bar in forever and it shows -- it somehow works out your innermost muscles and turns you completely into jelly, but she also starts and ends with lots of yoga moves, weights, and stretching. I love this place. It has everything you'd want in a gym/training facility - the people are nice and welcoming, the clientele does not all look like extras in an Abercrombie commercial (instead it's a diverse group of real people from Oakland), and it smells like... nothing. There, I said it - it doesn't smell like sweat or body oils which is normal gross gym smell, and it doesn't smell like incense and confusing candles, like a spa, or a gym trying to not smell like a gym. I train with Alison, the owner, about 3x a week, and take the Volt class with Kristarae 1-2x a week and feel like I get both a good workout and a good time, every time. read more
