Mike has been my trainer for a little over two years, and it's one of the best training relationships I've ever had. He's got an encyclopedic knowledge of the body and can answer almost any question I have about how my body has been performing in my workouts during the week. But the thing I like most about Mike is that he treats fitness with a relaxedness that has been very good for my motivation. Previous trainers I've had have given me workouts that were intimidating and that I had to power through. I have been going to BFF for 9 years now, which seems crazy since I could not keep a gym for more than a few months before that. One thing I really like about BFF is their focus on making you stronger and healthier without any of the weird attitude you sometimes see at gyms. They really understand how all the systems in the body work, and craft each workout session to the specific individual. I primarily train with Mark, who manages to be both a highly effective trainer and a genuinely nice and lighthearted guy. Under his training, I have gotten stronger, leaner, and have fewer back problems. I am in better shape than I was 9 years ago, which is saying something. I have trained a little with Michael, who also has a deep understanding of body mechanics and a very easy demeanor. I really could not recommend BFF more highly. Totally recommend BFF! It's a friendly place, with really skilled and knowledgeable trainers. I started training with Mark Lynn after going through knee surgery, thinking I'd just work with him for a few months until I could get back to doing my own thing, and 22 years later, he's still my trainer and I am so glad. When I want to push and work hard, he'll take me there. When I am injured, he's patient and helpful. And honestly, I've never had the same workout twice. In 22 years!!! What you'll get at Bay Functional Fitness: Trainers who are intellectuals, witty, informed and educated. If you have to sweat and strain, then trust me when I tell you that having someone with you who can carry the conversation or even get into a heated debate with, is awesome. My personal favorite, and they know it, so I'm not hurting anyone's feelings, is Mike Smartt. He is indeed "smart", and he doesn't make you count - he actually keeps track of the reps for you and can carry on a conversation. I'm not kidding - I've put him to the test many a time. He has a very scientific approach to the workout, he develops a program and works you out slow and steady so you can do nothing but succeed. It's nice that a local business is well-rated here. But they must be resting on that acclaim. I'm interested in expanding my workouts to gain strength in areas long-ignored. I haven't had the drive and thought that signing up with a local, convenient, well-regarded spot would be a good start. I called them on a Monday...left a message. No response in the next few days, so I called again on Thursday, was careful saying my phone number (twice) in case that was a problem and waited for a call back. That was 5-6 weeks ago! About 6 weeks ago I decided to couple my personal training sessions with the Bay Functional Fitness Boot Camp sessions that are held each Wednesday and Saturday. Classes of 5-8 women meet Wednesday evenings at 6:45 for an hour and Saturday mornings at 9:45 for an hour and a half. The boot comps are rigorous cardio and strength training. They are fast pace and hard hitting and you sweat your ass off and can't breathe most of the time. Katie and Lisa are the teachers and they challenge you and make you cuss uncontrollably during each class. I think that the BFF boot camps are relatively economical at $18 for Wednesday night drop ins, $22.50 for Saturday drop ins, or $90 for 6 weeks of Wednesdays, $108 for 6 weeks of Saturdays. After all the Christmas cookies, turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie you've been eating, do yourself a favor and check out the Bay Functional Fitness boot camps to get that ass back back in your pants in early 2010. read more

My company contracts with BFF to provide group fitness classes. These classes are some of the best I've ever taken. Hard. Full of variety. Never gets old. Kicks my ass. Brianna in particular is full of energy and enthusiasm. I am easily injured and am proud to be doing very well in her classes. This place is so great I'm actually coming out of my Yelp retirement to rave. In June of 2009 I met the four owners of Bay Functional Fitness - Katie Ross, Lisa Vonnegut, Mark Lynn, & Michael Smartt - to begin a training regimen and I'm not going to lie, the idea of personal training scared the holy crap out of me - I really wasn't sure I could handle this. I hadn't been any version of athletic since swimming in high school, which meant I had a LOT of work ahead of me! But they held my hand and eased me into a new life with strengthening exercises, cardio, stretching and a slew of fitness/wellness wisdom. Way back in 2009, the words "get into plank" made me curse. Now, they're just part of the routine. Running a few minutes on the treadmill used to make my skin crawl. But now? Not a prob. And hopping on the bosu for some balance work? Well, I'll be honest, that thing still brings me to the verge of tears, but it's getting better and really, the Fab Four are SO great that the bosu isn't SO bad. And that's why I love 'em. Mike, Mark, Lisa and Katie are all truly knowledgeable, professional, and way too much fun to work out with which makes it super easy to keep coming back. I was never a big fan of exercise but these four have converted and hooked me. If you hate meat market approch to fitness, do not like preening trainers and fee hungry owners of gyms, this is your place. Personalized training by, yes, knowledgable, experienced and fit trainers. No steroids here, a great combination of humor and sweat, sounds stinky but in an enviroment that really promotes your wellness. No need to push through the pain to more pain, better to work your way up from de-conditioned to conditioned, no judging, really nice environment that makes you feel like a private session is really private. I cannot say how motivating Katie Ross is. She is one of the Partners of BFF and I see her 1-2 times per week. She has a solid understanding, and made a quick assessment, of where my physical problems lie and always mixes things up for a session that is always fresh. I came in on a recommendation from a friend that has been seeing Lisa V for training and massage. I needed a massage so bad!! When I came in I sensed a calm energy immediately . I was greeted by Lisa and taken back to the massage room. I loved the way it was decorated... Lisa gave me the best massage I have ever had. The attention to detail and her intuitive sense on pressure and what part of my body needed extra care was so refreshing (I have had some bad massages in the past) She truly made me feel comfortable and relaxed. Ok, before I get to my review of BFF and my trainer Mark Lynn, I should note that I very rarely post Yelp reviews. I read them all the time, I just don't post much, even when I really do like or really don't like something. Maybe I don't think my opinion is worth broadcasting; maybe I don't want to bother publishing my opinions; I don't know. I offer that only to put this review in context. That out of the way, here's the deal. I DO NOT like exercising for the sake of exercising. I like being active, I like doing stuff outdoors, but I am not one of those people who loves to run, or bike, or play tennis. And working out in a gym? Ugh. Over the years, I've thrown away plenty of bucks on gyms and trainers. Supporting my distaste of gyms and trainers was my injury during just a few sessions with another Oakland trainer several years ago. (That was a fantastic rationalization for avoiding such strenuous activities in the future...) In his defense, I was not in great shape. Of course, that's being kind. His job is to assess physical condition and ability, and to train the client accordingly. But he is more about chiseled abs and conspicuous muscles. For many, he is perfect. Not me. I needed someone who could somehow, magically, convince me to show up twice a week and work out for an hour. Ridiculous. I looked for that for 15 years. Ain't gonna happen. And then one day I walked by BFF and, since they are located a few blocks from my house, I gave them a call. I assumed that whoever met me would want to sign me up as their personal client, for financial reasons. Not so. One of the owners, Katie, determined that another trainer, Mark Lynn, was better for me. And boy was she right. Mark is the only person who has ever gotten me to stick to a fitness schedule beyond a few weeks. Don't get me wrong: I still don't look forward to working out and I am not euphoric during or after my sessions. However -- and for me this is the amazing part (and I think important from a fitness/health perspective) -- I keep going anyway. Why? Because Mark keeps driving me to improve myself through an engaging interaction he knows I will respond to. Once I get my sorry ass there, Mark actually manages to get me through the workout in a way that is fun and interesting, making the time pass 1000 times faster than if I was doing it by myself at a regular gym or even at my own house. I have now trained at BFF for almost two years, all the while doing something I really don't want to do. As a result, I am more fit, I have less back pain, and I feel better physically every day. Last week my friend invited me to Bay Functional Fitness to take part in a group class called Cardio Booty Camp. At first, I thought it was gonna be super wack, but it was actually a great workout. It was a super fun class, I had a good time and will be coming back. The instructor took the time to learn our names and broke down the dances slowly for the "rythmically challenged". The instructor, Rae, was so full of energy, that her energy made you want to keep on doing it; even though you were dead tired. read more

Lisa Vonnegut's massage work is incredibly soothing but does not lack precision or strength when you have deeply held tension. Not only is she highly experienced and lovely to work with, she also has expertise in system that uses neuroscience to improve movement and performance. I first met Lisa Vonnegut when I was looking for a good massage therapist and later began working out with her. I had some trepidation about working with a personal trainer, but it was a very good decision; Lisa has been an inspiration to me. With her instruction and encouragement I've gone from a very sedentary existence to a more active lifestyle. She's approachable and motivating- beyond simply coordinating workouts she managed to get me to rethink my relationship with my body and with exercise. I worked with Brianna throughout my pregnancy up to my 37th week! I only stopped because I was advised by my OB to not go into labor. I lost all my pregnancy weight and then some 3 weeks after I delivered. Brianna is an awesome trainer AND an excellent barre instructor (she teaches that too!). Her knowledge of training me during my pregnancy helped me out so much and kept my energy level up. She is very patient, professional and energetic-what more can you ask for! read more

I would give this gym less than one star if I could. I don't know how this gym stays in business when their customer service is so awful. I contacted the manager of the gym - Mark Lynn - to ask for a tour and learn about their trainers and rates. I don't think I've met anyone whose job it is to sign up new clients, that seemed less interested in doing so. He appeared bored when interviewing me about my fitness needs, and unresponsive when I asked to be connected with trainers who could train me for $75/hour (which didn't seem like an unreasonable request)! I guess their gym isn't looking for new clients that aren't willing to pay $100/hour to be trained in functional fitness. read more

When I started with BFF 8 months ago, I was an absolute beginner. "Reps" worked in marketing and "hammies" were for Sunday dinner. Now I'm running, stretching, lifting weights, rolling on balls, and strengthening my core. A few months ago, I was feeling lousy and stressed out and had gone months without serious exercise. After meeting Lisa Vonnegut (based on her Yelp reviews), I decided that the expense of a personal trainer was worth it and it was probably a better investment that therapy. I have not regretted that decision. I feel great, and I've started running at least twice a week, too. I also attend the Bay Functional Fitness boot camp, although I wish the Saturday class were a little earlier in the morning. I've had wonderful massages from Lisa and Mark is my personal trainer. They are both professional and yet as friendly and hip as you can get. I've known and worked with both for a number of years now and am truly happy that they have a studio convenient for us in the Oakland area. This is a comfortable place to be, almost as good as home because you are one on one and don't have to deal with a lot of random personalities.
