In terms of dishes, we tried the Carpathian wild mushroom soup with black truffle oil, cabbage rolls, crispy potato pancakes, and the colorful party platter, which comes with an assortment of pierogis. The party platter was my personal favorite. They have many tasty cocktails, infused spirits, and mocktails to choose from. The Glory to Ukraine shot is delicious and highly recommended. First, a bit of context: my mother was born in Ukraine, so I grew up eating authentic Ukrainian food and have a good sense of what these dishes should taste like. Unfortunately, the meal fell well short of those expectations. The borscht was extremely weak in flavor and lacked the richness I would expect. It was also served without fresh dill, which is a classic accompaniment. When I asked for dill, I was brought parsley instead. The Chicken Kyiv was equally disappointing. It tasted like a frozen grocery store version that had simply been plated with a few decorative garnishes. It lacked the freshness, texture, and homemade quality that make this dish special. Updated review! Came for our anniversary and had a delightfully delicious time! I don't drink alcohol but I was supremely excited when I convinced our waiter, Dima, to serve us the wheel of fun with berry compote and uzvar -- which is a spiced dried fruit juice that tastes like a campfire. It's cold but intriguing. Though I might not order it a second time, I was glad to try it and a single serving is only $5 that they split into 4 shots. The wheel of fun honestly made my night! And the berry compote carafe is definitely worth $15. We had the party platter of varenyky and substituted the red beef ones for more potato ones. But next time I really want more orange pork varenyky! They're sweet and savory and I was reluctant to share the 4 on the plate! We also had barosh (polenta balls) and the potato pancakes (super circular!), which, much like my previous review, were a hit! The mushroom sauce that comes with both is just soooo good. I just realized the last time I wrote a review here was 7 years ago. In that time, I've been back at least 30 times, and it's one of my most favorite restaurants in the US. When I stepped into Tryzub, I felt like I was back in my Lviv. The restaurant was beautifully adorned with Ukrainian relics, books about Ukraine, and magical string lighting. The ceilings were a marvel to look at and the corner of the room was painted with a mural of Lviv's center. We had made a reservation as it was my birthday and Easter weekend. It was a good thing we did, because Tryzub was fully packed. When we got there, we checked in and were promptly seated. Our waitress, Vasylyna, took great care of us and I loved how I was able to order in Ukrainian. As far as the food, everything was delicious and tasted like back at home in Ukraine. I had the Chicken Kiev and my better half had the goulash. You cannot go wrong with either dish. For drinks, we had the kompot, a sour cherry infused spirit (which our waitress brought for me as a birthday gift), and a light Ukrainian beer. I really liked the infused spirit, and I loved the range of flavors that they have of these. Even though the restaurant was a 25 minute Uber ride from our hotel, we are so glad that we came here. Please forgive that which sounds funky in translation. I won't lie. I've been putting this review off and on. I've been here twice, tried a lot of things, and haven't written a review. So, this review won't have all the details that I usually include, where I take each dish apart and tell you everything I thought. No. But this review will be in Russian (I wish, Yelp, I shake both my fists at thee!) I have Ukrainian heritage. Although my parents came from the Soviet Union, they were in Ukraine. The dishes my mother cooked were Ukrainian and those that were eaten in the general Soviet Union. Therefore, although I am not an expert on Ukrainian gastronomy, I ate real Ukrainian dishes at home. This is what Tryzub does well. Their food is one hundred and ten percent based on traditional food that was eaten in Ukraine and the General Union. What is especially cool is that Tryzub not only cooks traditional food, but does something creative with each dish. The quality of the ingredients and the food is amazing. Everything is thought out very well and everything is very fresh. I will tell you a big secret, because my mother does not read my reviews, that the mushroom soup I had here was a little bit tastier than what I eat at home. Now let's talk about the atmosphere. The whole restaurant is covered with memorabilia related to Ukraine and Ukrainian heritage. The decorations take up practically every space on the wall. But even then, they did not overdo it. There are restaurants that throw a bunch of pictures on and the result is God knows what. This is not the case here. Here you feel like you are in a Ukrainian home. And I want to add, some of the decorations are even a little funny. Now I want to talk about the service. It was very friendly. The food came out of the kitchen quickly, and the waitress who looked after us did everything in her power to make sure we had an awesome time. I'll tell you what helps me: I see "salo" or "borscht" - I know what it is. These dishes don't scare me. I imagine an American might see "traditional plate of lard" and ask: "What is this?" They'll tell him: "It's a pork product that's so fatty that it'll melt in the pan." Some will probably look at this waitress as if she had three heads. These things don't scare me. But it's precisely what I know that gives me the opportunity that when I bring my friends here who don't have Ukrainian or Soviet heritage, I can tell them what it is and tell them not to be afraid. Outstandingly wonderful new generation Ukrainian food. * * * Before Tryzub, I had only had Old Grandmother Chicago Ukrainian food. Ukrainian Village on the West Side once had a lot of these. Buffet tables. Nearly everything was dumplings or had cabbage in it. This was food that was better on the second third or fourth day. Waiting on those buffet tables allowed the flavors in the food to blend. The results were wonderful. Yeah, way too many dishes had cabbage ... and I am no cabbage lover. Ukrainian Village would make me a cabbage lover for a night. If you had a nice beer to wash things down with, life would be perfect. * * * Those old grandmothers are long gone. The new generation of kids know how to cook - and their cooking has a modern sensibility. Before a certain unwelcome military event - a lot of this new type of cooking could have been found in Kyev itself. That new type of cooking is wonderful. Tryzub brings the modern kid's style of cooking to Chicago's West Side. Chicago is lucky to have it. I loved Tryzub so much I had to come back for a second meal. Both meals were legendary. * * * Among the many many fantastic attractions of Tryzub. a) A long series of homemade infused vodkas. The Horseradish is to die for. Watermelon Mint and Linden Elderflower are unique flavors whose taste can not be inferred by knowing the identity of the two components. The ingredients morph into something else interesting and intriguing. b) A flat dumpling (Not unlike a smashburger) that comes out of Crimea. It is one of the best Eastern European dumplings I have had. c) An insanely good orange agave latte d) I am usually not a schnitzel fan. But Tryzub's pork schnitzel is as good as pork schnitzel ever gets. Desperate schnitzel cooks try to distract the eater by adding odd or weird seasonings. (See Bavarian style schnitzel if you want an example.) Tryzub goes the classic route. Hammered pork. Breading. Saute. Nothing more. Their version completely works. e) A honey cake that must be eaten to be believed. There is not a Napoleon cake on the planet that can compare with Tryzub's honey cake. I am only listing the dishes that were remarkable. Everything else was just really really good. * * * Strangely you don't need a reservation for Tryzub. There are always open tables. I visited Chicago in March and went out of my way to visit this Ukrainian restaurant that had so many good reviews. It was around 1:45 PM on Saturday afternoon and there was no wait. The food was fantastic. The food was authentic, unique, and full of flavor. There were no bad dishes ordered! They also had a wide selection of drinks and cocktails, but I didn't feel like drinking that day. One small hiccup: when I first sat down, the server didn't give me the brunch menu, so I ordered from the regular lunch menu without realizing brunch was still available. Once I saw other people getting brunch dishes, I switched part of my order over. It wasn't a big deal, but it would've been nice to know all my options from the start. The vibe of the place was nice. It was casual and welcoming. Near the bathrooms, there's some bold anti-Putin artwork, which was both surprising and entertaining. Wow is all I can say to start. Upon walking in, this is one of the most beautiful restaurants in the neighborhood. The service was very welcoming and gave a great rundown of the menu. I'm familiar with Eastern European food being Eastern European myself, but knew nothing of Ukrainian food. The potato pancake flight is a great starter! I had the hunters stew and it was so filling and luscious for a cold day. The real hidden gem here is the infused spirits, seriously they have a flavor for every kind of cocktail. In Chicago for the weekend and made my way to Ukrainian Village. Tryzub was highly rated, so I went there for lunch. Being half Ukrainian and having lived in Kyiv, I was hit with a wave of nostalgia as I stepped into the restaurant. The walls are adorned with various things that make you feel like you're in someone's home. Ukrainian pop music plays through the speakers. I sat at the bar, which features even more interesting aesthetics. I really wanted to holubtsi, but they were featuring their brunch menu. I had a breakfast skillet (essentially shakshuka) and potato pancakes. The skillet was great. The eggs could have used a pinch of salt, but the toasted, seasoned rye bread that's served with it more than makes up for it. Some people like thick potato pancakes, while I prefer them thin and crispy. The ones at Tryzub are somewhere in the middle. But they're served with plenty of sour cream and a tasty mushroom cream sauce. The bartender was friendly and accommodating, and I happily purchased a Tryzub t-shirt (the same ones that staff wear). I was so excited to eat here. There were so many unique things I wanted to try. I was planning on coming back several times just so I could try them all. But I don't eat meat. It's never been a problem when I go to restaurants in Chicago because they're usually willing to accommodate. But not this place. I asked them if I could substitute the bacon item for something else and they said no. Their policy is that they will not change anything on their menu. It felt so aggressive to me. And very disappointing. Unfortunately I decided to get their bulgarwheat burger with beet hummus and sweet potato fries and that was also incredibly disappointing. Maybe it's because I'm used to food being salted in America but there was no flavor. It was like a mouthful of bland mush. They clearly don't understand how delicious vegan food can be. The fries weren't even good and I don't know how you can mess that up. There was no salt or seasoning. Or a bare minimum. On a side note their table top was kinda gross. Very sticky and just felt dirty. Not a good sign either. Anyways, I was super full from the bland bulgarwheat but I didn't want that to be my "special treat" for the weekend so I went to another restaurant to wash down the bland flavors I need to end this weekend on a positive note so I got a mezze at a Turkish restaurant. The place is easy to find. We arrived in Uber so not sure about parking lot space. I saw on the website that you do have to reserve a table, so I make the reservation by email on their website around 3:30 pm but I didn't get a response until two hours later, and they offered me a table at 9pm though I requested one for 5 pm. After I sent the email we just went ahead to the place before 5 pm and we were lucky to find a table without the reservation. I did called ahead of time to make sure they were not super busy. I got the winter borshch ( first time trying) it was good but not what I expected. Our server was very nice and polite. The price of the food was a little expensive because the ingredients (beets) not exotic or hard to find. You can go to major restaurants and get a dish with meet for the same price. I stumbled across this establishment thanks to my Ukranian friend who was visiting town and insisted we try some of his culture's food. That being said, this was my first experience having Ukranian food and it definitely did not disappoint (though I do not have anything else to compare it to). I learned a lot of cultural nuances during my dining experience, especially accompanied by a Ukrainian native-- like the recommendation to dip the the raw green onions by dipping in salt before pairing alongside the soup, bread, and really with any of the other dishes. From my photos, you can see that we ordered a little bit from every part of the menu. I was pleasantly surprised by the multifacetedness of dishes ordered. I feel like I got a little bit of salty, sour, and sweet throughout the meal-- my tastebuds were definitely satisfied! Prices were a bit high for some of the dishes in my opinion, but I thought it was fun that they coincided with significant dates in Ukranian history. Although my knowledge of Ukrainian cuisine is limited, Tryzub Ukrainian Kitchen served as an excellent introduction to the flavors and traditions of this culture.
