I stumbled across this establishment thanks to my Ukranian friend who was visiting town and insisted we try some of his culture's food. That being said, this was my first experience having Ukranian food and it definitely did not disappoint (though I do not have anything else to compare it to). I learned a lot of cultural nuances during my dining experience, especially accompanied by a Ukrainian native-- like the recommendation to dip the the raw green onions by dipping in salt before pairing alongside the soup, bread, and really with any of the other dishes. From my photos, you can see that we ordered a little bit from every part of the menu. I was pleasantly surprised by the multifacetedness of dishes ordered. I feel like I got a little bit of salty, sour, and sweet throughout the meal-- my tastebuds were definitely satisfied! Prices were a bit high for some of the dishes in my opinion, but I thought it was fun that they coincided with significant dates in Ukranian history. Although my knowledge of Ukrainian cuisine is limited, Tryzub Ukrainian Kitchen served as an excellent introduction to the flavors and traditions of this culture. This restaurant is situated in the heart of the Ukrainian Village in Chicago. I enjoyed arriving here as my Uber driver dropped me off near the front entrance. I loved seeing the charming neighborhood. The interior of this restaurant has a nice traditional and modern twist to it. Their bar area is nice and they offer a nice variety of drinks. I started off with a Ukrainian Beer, skipped an appetizer and ordered the Beef Goulash for my entree. Besides Beef Goulash, they offer Chicken Kyiv, Crispy Pork Shnitzels, Stuffed Cabbage, Ukrainian Steak and other traditional entrees. My waitress was personable. She recommended the brand of Ukrainian Beer I started off with when I asked for a traditional beer to drink. The Beef Goulash was different but good. I've been accustomed to other styles of Beef Goulash. It was good and filling. Unfortunately, I had to stop there. Wish I brought a heartier appetite for trying an appetizer and dessert. Nonetheless, I'm so glad that I had a chance to experience this place. Also, I didn't need to wait long for my food to arrive. If you haven't visited Chicago's Ukrainian Village, I recommend checking this place out for lunch or dinner. Bring an appetite as well! Was staying in the U Village and wanted a close walk for dinner. Very nicely appointed interior. Busy on a Thursday evening. Sipped a cold Obolon to start. It reminds me of a Belgian beer, a little aftertaste, but fine. We tried something different, Banosh, which was fried polenta in a mushroom sauce, outstanding! Also a tried & true pork schnitzel with mashed potatoes, also delicious. Only slight disappointment was we arrived famished and a salad and bread would have been very welcomed with dinner, especially at 20 bucks for each dish. We came here to celebrate my friend's birthday! The restaurant looks so authentic and has some nice vibes in general but the food and the service is questionable. The food took forever to arrive! I ordered chicken Kyiv. Unfortunately it was a very small piece of chicken. It would feels like eating only 3 pieces of chicken nuggets. There was no sides coming with this dish. No rice , no noodles, no salad , no fries. I paid more than 18 dollars for this dish and I was still very very hungry. The portion felt to me like i just ate a complimentary bread and butter and still waiting for the main dish. (There were no complimentary bread and butter btw) Every body felt sorry for my dish lol The restaurant was dirty and not clean, there was a lot of flies on the wall and tables. I felt so disgusted and I was worried about flies falling in my cup of water! The thing that we didn't like as well, was the bill. They ignored the request of sperating the bills and included all orders in one bill. When we asked them to correct it, the refused saying " we can't. It is already in the system" We all know that they can adjust it !! but they didn't want to adjust it. Another thing is that they included 18% of the price in the bill as tip for themselves, plus something called service fees. They added it without even asking us. Then, they asked for more tips afterwards as well! It is not professional , Specially they don't even mention anything about the 18% tip in the menu or thier website. Forcing customers to pay tips without notice or permission is not acceptable , specially if the customer didn't even like the service!! Such a cozy spot for meeting up with friends - the interior feels like you're in someone's living room with lots of cool Ukrainian decor, and lots of people around you speaking Russian and Ukrainian too! The cocktails were delicious - the gypsy fortune teller was super tasty as was the mezcal cocktail. A got the Uzvar which was a delicious smoky non-alcoholic drink. There's a lot of house infused spirits to choose from, and the party wheel looked like a lot of fun at other tables (basically a ferris wheel of shots). The food was also quite tasty - we got Salo (basically thin sliced pork fat with bread, mustard, and onions) and the rainbow party platter of pierogi. The party platter was fun to share and most of the flavors were pretty good - I'm not a big fan of ground beef, but I really liked the vegetarian options! For entrees, we shared the beef goulash (which was just okay for me - the beef was a bit dry) and banosh (basically fried polenta balls - super tasty). Dessert was probably a highlight - their honey cake was lovely with lots of cinnamon, and the sour cherry varenyky were phenomenal. Service is probably the main area for improvement - we barely saw our waitress and it was a bit hard to get the attention of someone when we were trying to order. I grew up on this food, so I appreciate the cuisine and the atmosphere of the restaurant. It is beautifully decorated and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. It's worth giving it a shot, just know that **everything is a la carte** and you might want some veggies. We got some Varenyky as an appetizer, they were quite good. My girlfriend got the Chicken Kyiv. It was quite flavorful, kind of like Chicken Cordon Bleu. It could have been bigger... it was just that chicken on a plate, basically no sides. I got the New Style Banosh. It was very flavorful, I think this was the winner of the evening. They were fried polenta balls with cheese on the inside. The mushroom sauce on the outside was very good, but there wasn't enough of it. 2 others with us got the Crispy Pork Schnitzels. It was straight up breaded, fried schnitzels (cool, no problem) on a plate with mustard and ketchup squirted in lines on the plate for a little flair. No sides, just 2 maybe 4.5" disks of deep fried schnitzel on a plate. WHY did the server not tell us we should get some sides? She was not great. She was not around much at all. She definitely didn't seem happy to be there. The food took forever to get to us even though the restaurant was pretty full but def not capacity. The place was really cute, I'll give it that. I try not to mix my restaurant excursions-or reviews thereof-with larger social and political issues. However, in this case, it is inescapable that as I write, the status of Ukraine as a country is very much unknown. And what happens tomorrow could date this review very quickly. Many of the people working here were clearly still learning English (though this is not to say that they weren't providing good customer service), and though I'm not the sort of person to ask questions, it's hard to sit in this restaurant and not wonder what's going on in their minds. But this is still a business, and by any measure, they delivered an experience worth coming and paying for. The interior is quite marvelously decorated, and even the men's bathroom held a variety of posters in the style of humor one might expect from the region. The menu was surprisingly vegetarian-friendly, and given my indulgent travel habits, I was happy to order a sauerkraut and mushroom dumpling dish, because I'm sorely in need of probiotics and fiber. Sour is probably my least favorite of the major tastes, and I have rarely ever eaten Central European cuisine, but this dish delivered a variety of flavors and I had no trouble devouring it quickly. An aromatic local tea was also recommended to me. I was actually was super impressed by this place. I would say it's more of a 4.5, but I'll bump it up to a 5 because it's important to support Ukrainian businesses. Either way, it meets the hype. They make their own infused vodkas which is super neat. I tried to get the group to partake, but they decided to go with cocktails made with the infusions. I got the Bloody Marikya which was made with horseradish infused vodka. It was super tasty, but super spicy. I do like they went bold. For apps, we got the charcuterie board and the potato pancakes. Both were actually excellent and I was surprised by the potato pancakes with mushroom sauce. I'm usually not a fan of those kinds of pancakes and mushrooms, but this worked! I went next with the pork schnitzel and an order with potato wedges. I thought they should have come together and both were a little pricey. However, both dishes were excellent. I liked the wedges with its sauce that reminded me of potatoes bravas. The schnitzel was a little bit of a safe choice, but it was crispy and tasty. It was also presented well! We finished with a chocolate cake and sweet pancakes . Both were excellent and melted in my mouth. I'd gladly save room for these dishes. As for the service, it was fine, but there seemed to be a bit of out of synch with plates being delivered and taken away. The server was trying hard and he was super accommodating so I'm just guessing he was a little frazzled with the popularity of this place due to current events. When it's all said and done, this was an excellent dinner and I will be sure to stop by again. If you want to support the local Ukrainians, this is a good place to start. read more

If you walk in here you are hit with the Ukrainian coat of arms and a ton of great nationalist decor. They greet you in Ukrainian too but I moved from Kiev when I was 3 so unfortunately I don't speak it... only Russian. They either don't speak Russian or refuse, which is fine, so English it was. We ordered two fruity black teas and the sour cherry Vareniki. I usually do savory dumplings but these were so tasty, especially with the chocolate on top to balance out the tartness. The teas were also absolutely delicious and came out with the bag held to the glass cup by a clothespin, which kind of brings memories of being home and having fresh laundry hanging in the backyard. I would have loved to come back here to try lunch but they were closed on Monday so I will have to give it another try when I'm back. read more

What a refreshing non-traditional Ukrainian restaurant. The decor inside looks traditional. however, the menu is creative and frankly delicious. They do have some of the traditional dishes, but many of the dishes, I do not recognize, and never tried. Some of the dishes I remember as a child, but I have never seen in a restaurant. The décor is very unique and colorful which speaks to the heritage. Behind the cashier/hostess is a small hallway filled with pictures of the past. It feels like a family restaurant where you are not judged if you spoke a tad too loud during lunch. We ordered the Trio Pancake, Chicken Kyiv, and Chocolate Walnut cake. Both entrees came out with colorful sauces and decoration, which look too pretty to eat. I can taste the squash, avocado, and other flavors in the sauces. Both the potato pancakes and Kyiv were fried, which I thought would be healthier pan fried or baked, but very appetizing. The Chicken in the Kyiv was tender as there were a lot of chicken broth with dill inside. The portions are on the small side so I am glad that we ordered the Walnut cake for dessert. They have a small but selective option for cocktails, wine, and coffee drinks. We saw patio space on the side, but I feel like it was easier to get service on the inside since staffing is so tight these days. The staff is friendly and willing to explain what the dishes are. When I first walked into the restaurant I swore I had walked into a time portal to Ukraine. Most of the guests and servers were speaking in their local language, which I thought was super cool and even more authentic! I ended up sitting at the bar because it was only me and the server there (I think Kyle was his name) was very cool, attentive, and great with the recommendations. He even recommended some Chi town spots for me to check out on my visit. The ambiance was very casual and the restaurant wasn't super busy while I was there. I ordered the chicken Kyiv and the mushroom soup, both of which were good. I actually liked the soup better than the Kyiv. I was turned off by how the butter practicality came on me when I cut the chicken open perhaps this is the surprise of the chicken Kyiv. The soup was hearty and filling. The chicken was nice, but I wouldn't say anything special. However, I would recommend it for someone who has never had the dish as an introduction to Ukrainian food. I came here with a friend to support and enjoy the Ukrainian culture, and dinner here might just be one of the best meals I've ever had. We started with Borshch soup (spelling on purpose). I had the vegetarian option, and my friend had it with pork--both served with sides of green onion, sour cream, and pumpernickel bread. Next were Crispy Potato Pancakes--four large, perfectly formed cakes served with sides of mushroom sauce and sour cream. I had the Stuffed Cabbages, and my friend had the Crispy Pork Schnitzels. The Stuffed Cabbages were more filling and flavorful than I'd anticipated. Both entrees were served without any sides but large enough to be considered enough for an entire meal. We ordered Parmesan Curly Fries and Crispy Potato Wedges--way too much after all the pre-entrees. One order of Crispy Potato Pancakes is enough for two people. We only needed one side for two people, and I would suggest the Parmesan Curly Fries. This is a gorgeous place to have dinner. After dark, the lighting and decorations make this a glowing jewelry box filled with an eclectic mix of Ukrainian cultural artifacts. Not to be missed are the corridors filled with memorabilia. This is not an inexpensive restaurant, and you can drop some serious money if you add cocktails. Speaking of cocktails, the "Wheel of Fun" featuring four flavors of infused vodkas, is served on a miniature Ferris wheel. Note: their website has an older menu; the current menu features fewer items and slightly higher prices. Parking is scarce in the area; the #66 CTA bus is a good option, and the trip from Michigan Ave to Leavitt is a 20- to 25-minute ride. The Blue Line's Chicago station at Milwaukee, that connects with the #66 bus, is east about a mile and a half. read more
