Staropolska is a gem! The menu is affordable, the food is great and street parking was easily affordable. We made a reservation as we were a group of 5 and it was not an issue, but it could be on a weekend. There was only one server, but she was on top of her game. The restaurant is European, so it's not designed to be the American rush to eat. We started with potato pierogi to share. They were so amazing! My entree was stuffed chick with dumplings and a lovely cucumber salad. Very good, decent portion. The only detractor could be the restroom which is down a flight of stairs, and could be a challenge for anyone with mobility issues. Def worth checking out. read more

Chicago reportedly has a large Polish immigrant population, so I tried Polish food here for the first time. It was quite unique and commendable. Sour Rye Soup: Not bad, but honestly, I wouldn't order it again... the fermented sourness was just too direct and intense. Polish Hunters Stew: Apparently a national dish of Poland. The first bite tasted like Italian meat sauce, with a rich tomato flavor and a slight smoky aroma; then I discovered the ingredients included sausage, cured beef brisket, minced meat, and sauerkraut, making it quite substantial and much more satisfying than Italian meat sauce. Overall, it was a rich, sweet and sour flavor, perfect with rice, pasta, or bread. Sauerkraut & Mushroom Pierogi: Dumplings, but the Polish version. The sauerkraut was only slightly sour, refreshing and delicious with the mushrooms, while the sour cream added a touch of creaminess and richness. Unfortunately, the skin was thick and sticky, as if it had been boiled for a long time. For better dumplings skin, please turn to a Northeastern Chinese. Half Duck: Strangely, it reminded me of confit de canard. The meat was incredibly tender, falling off the bone with a gentle pull; the melt-in-your-mouth texture was truly delightful. The cranberry sauce was perfectly balanced between sweet and sour, with a rich fruity and fermented aroma. The rosemary emerged in the aftertaste, enriching the flavors and cutting through the richness. The accompanying sauerkraut was even better than the duck, with a crunchy texture and a mild, pleasant sourness, enveloped in a rich buttery and creamy flavor. The accompanying fpotatoes were also soft and delicious, but the roasted pear was too overpowering in its softness and sweetness, not meeting my expectations for a palate cleanser. Ahead of a few rounds at Revolution Brewery, we stopped by this amazing Polish restaurant. The atmosphere was a classic Eastern European vibe - dark wood, a well stocked bar, plenty of seating and a separate room for larger parties. The food here was excellent. I had the cheese and potato pierogis which were delicious and covered with grilled onions and bacon. My wife got the stuffed cabbage and enjoy equally. Service was top notch. Visited Chicago from Boston, which doesn't have many (if any) Eastern European restaurants so I was very excited to come for dinner and I was not disappointed. The food is delicious and reminds me of home... probably some of the best food I had on my trip! You can split the pierogi half/half, but savory+savory or sweet+sweet, not savory+sweet. We got the potato and cheese (which were filled with more of a ricotta than potato) and mushroom. We also got the chicken schnitzel (3 giant pieces of chicken over heavenly mashed potatoes) don't underestimate the portion sizes here! However, the beet soup with dumplings disappointed me a little, it was just a beet broth with dough-heavy dumplings. I thought it would be more of a borscht. Absolutely five stars! We stopped by here for a quick lunch after getting some groceries from the Polish supermarket. The food was incredibly authentic and comforting from start to finish. We had the cheese and potato pierogis, Żurek, pickle soup, and the goulash with potato pancakes, and every single dish was packed full of rich, homemade flavor. The goulash and potato pancakes were so good that we honestly wished they gave more than two. Our waitress was amazing as well, super friendly, attentive, and genuinely helpful. The portions were generous, everything arrived hot and fresh, and you can tell a lot of care goes into every recipe. It felt like a true home cooked meal in the best way. My dietary restrictions don't mix well with Polish food because I don't eat pork or beef, but I had the vegetarian platter and could not have been happier. The zucchini pancakes were delightful. Very authentic Polish food and a wonderful and attentive staff make this restaurant a must go when in Chicago. Everything about this place screams good old fashioned Polish meal. Ukrainian borscht with subtle pieces of potato--great. Mushroom soup? Yes, great as well. I'm unaccustomed to pierogis not being browned in butter (for a few decades at home), but the serving was generous and richly prepared. Smoked kielbasa were small links with onions (during those two decades, fresh was the choice--but these are now in the batting order) I did learn that I'm not a blintz fan. Best polish restaurant in Chicago which is saying something. The staff is 100% polish and would rather not speak English but can speak it perfectly. Ok have to let out a breath because I am so stuffed! So I brought a good friend (from Poland- Rzeszów) here to enjoy some polish cuisine. The pierogi were very tasty and packed with meat. The pork tenderloin with the mushroom sauce was amazing and I could actually cut with my fork. My friend said this is just like it is in Poland and she enjoyed all the dishes. Thank you to Staropolska for accommodating our large 20 person group last night! They graciously set us up in the private room (absolutely gorgeous) and brought in high chairs for the kids in the group. Our waitress was absolutely fantastic and attentive with our group. I highly appreciate you letting me practice my polish with you as well! She suggested that we order the family dinner for those who could in order to ensure timely meals. The family dinner was amazing and at $31/person it's a steal for the amount of food and a good variety of different Polish dishes. We have a few people who are vegetarian and they loved their veg dishes. Some of the children had dairy allergies and our waitress helped with suggesting what would be safe for them to eat. Man this place is so homey I love it. I'm born and raised on the south side so I've been eating polish food practically my entire life. The food is absolutely delicious and so authentic. The Hunters Stew was so warming and rich, and the meal for 2 was the perfect amount of food. The server was as attentive as they could be. My recommendation is that if you're going to have 1 person serving, bussing, bartending, and food running, you should at least have a manager present on the floor to support when it gets busy. This place is a Chicago institution, but I didn't expect to be blown away like I was. At $38, the Special for Two platter is probably the best value dinner in terms of quantity and quality that I've had in Chicago. It includes all of the greatest hits: potato pancakes, polish sausage, breaded chicken, steamed veggies, bacon wrapped plum, pierogis, and stuffed cabbage. We'd both recently had good pierogis at other restaurants & were hoping for much of the same; however, the food here did not live up to our expectations. He had the lamb which didn't seem to garner any praise. I ordered potato pancakes with both sour cream & applesauce & enjoyed that the pancakes were thin & had crispy fried edges. My combo of vegetarian pierogis (half potato & cheese, half sauerkraut & mushroom) were boiled; I'm partial to pan-fried pierogis but boiled would've been acceptable provided they were flavorful & fresh which unfortunately these weren't. I also wasn't a fan of their onion & bacon "jam" which is usually my favorite topping. We had an amazing experience here. The last time I dined at Staropolska was 10 years ago when I dined with my oldest son. This time, I met my middle son here because it is halfway between Logan Square and Old Irving Park where each of us lives. What a gem!!! We had the very same booth, an amazing waitress, delicious drinks and most of all, the best food we've had in a long long time. And we are food 'snobs' which we readily admit. 12/09/22 - I bookmarked this restaurant on Yelp months ago. I finally got here tonight looking forward to trying their food only to find out you need to have reservations. When I went in they seemed reluctant to serve me and asked me if I wanted to place an order to go. Why would I want to place an order to go & have cold food by the time I got home? I don't live that close. I asked if I could sit by the bar. I'm not sure but even though I was within 5' of the woman behind the bar they never looked my way or asked me if I needed anything. Very odd behavior for a server/bartender. 2 more people came in after me and were seated in the dining room? WTF? There were 2 items I wanted to order. One was the mushroom soup that was excellent (probably the best mushroom soup I ever had). The other was the Wiener schnitzel. Unfortunately it wasn't very good. The schnitzel lacked flavor. This came w/mashed potatoes & red cabbage that was pretty good. Overall I can only give them 2 stars for the following reasons. It was really odd as I felt like they really didn't want me there. This let to a rather awkward & uncomfortable dining experience. The best part was the mushroom soup. * 5 Stars for the mushroom soup, creamy and absolutely delicious * 3 Stars Mashes potatoes pretty good my sister makes kick ass mashed potatoes * 3 Stars Red Cabbage was good * 2 Stars Weiner schnitzel wasn't very good.
