I first met Mica several years ago at a photo shoot, where he was styled another model's hair. I admired from afar and knew that I had to see him as soon as possible. So I did and I haven't stopped. My hair's gone from long and wavy, with a Jerry Hall vibe to a '70s shag with bangs. I would never do bangs, I thought I never COULD do bangs. Can I give them 10 stars??? LaReina Hillseth is truly a genius. In my 27 years of life with curly hair, I've never had someone take so much time to learn about my hair, my hair history, what I like and don't like about it, and then execute the most amazing curly hair dry cut I could even wrap my mind around. It's honestly been close to 2 months since I've had my hair done and I still feel this way. The only reason I remembered to post this review is because I STILL love my hair. She also did a SUPERB color job. I came in for a balayage (blonde, I'm naturally a brunette). I had expressed to her that I didn't like how thin my hair is on top and she brought the color up higher to my roots to lighten the top of my hair and that helped SO much with the appearance of the thinning on top because their wasn't such a dark color contrast against my scalp. This is a fully honest review because I have had so much trouble with my hair my entire life and if anyone else has similar issues/has felt the same, I really recommend you see LaReina and/or I'm sure any of the stylists at this salon have their own amazing techniques! The space is so cute, in beautiful Rockridge in a bright and airy space that smelled like heaven and was decorated so nicely! Comfy chairs!! Such a great experience, I truly cannot wait to go back. I was recommended Goldfinch, specifically Ahna, by a friend of mine, and I decided to give it a try. I am SO glad that I did. I got my hair cut last week and it is my favorite haircut I've ever had. I asked for a below-the-shoulder length and asked her to do whatever she thought would look best unstyled/air-dried (as I never style my hair). She immediately decided on some texture and layers no higher than my chin, and cut it so perfectly evenly. After washing my hair and letting it air-dry a few days later, it's exactly what I hoped. I found Mica in 2017, a few months after I had baby #2. I was in desperate need of someone who can bring my sexy back. Since then I have seen him 3 times and now I'm ready to give you a well informed assessment of Mica. The Color: I had not colored my hair in years but wanted to brighten up my natural hair color a bit - and he did just that. I'm Korean but I have natural dark ashy brown hair, so he added some chocolatey baby lights that enhanced my natural look. It is exactly what I wanted for a fresh Spring look. My biggest takeaway was that he is able to create a natural blended look even when working with challenging Asian hair. Oh and that I can trust him with color, even if I decide to go lighter in the future. The Cut: Have you seen the photos? Nuff said. But let me add that, he has given me the best haircut in my entire lifetime as far as I can remember. It also grows out really nicely, so your haircut will go a long way. I told him I wanted to grow my hair out and to please don't cut off any of the length. I know I can trust him not to go off the rails like some Stylists have in the past. So Mica is obviously very talented, but he is more than that. He is truly an artistic soul, and has amazing sensibility when it comes to listening to his clients and being able to quickly grasp and translate that into something he can actually deliver on. Oh and one last thing - when I brought my 6 month old infant last year, I remember Mica helping me carry the entire stroller (with baby inside) up the steps, which I thought was very sweet. I get my hair cut by Stephanie at Goldfinch and I can't recommend her enough. There are so many people on Instagram who do shag/razor cuts, but Stephanie's work stood out to me so much that I decided to have her cut my hair. What stuck out to me was that she focuses on amazing looks that are natural and require little effort. This is definitely the case. My cut looks amazing but requires little to no maintenance! I feel so confident and so ~myself~. I've literally never gotten so many compliments on a cut. Stephanie is professional, sweet, and incredibly talented. She did a bang-up job even when I was wearing a mask and she couldn't see half my face! I felt safe and comfortable going here during Covid.
