Great desserts! Yes it was a cool 15C but the Tsujiri parfait was wonderful! All textures from mocha cubes to crisp cookie and crunchy barley vs red bean and matcha soft serve. Support YEG! Eat more soft serve!

Underwhelming bland flavors. Small portion. Long long wait. I was really excited for a green tea drink place with green tea baked goods. The line has been snaking out the door for the last 2 weeks. So i expected a nice treat on my visit. First off the line is stupid ridiculous. The layout of the place was poorly planned. The line frequently snakes out the door bc the till is basically at the entrance way. The menu is poorly positioned in the middle of the cafe so when waiting in the line it is extremely difficult to see. Unless you lose your place in line to get up close to it or wait until last minute to decide what you want to order. I felt this is the reason why the lines were soooooooo long and a drink took 30 min with only 6 people ahead of me. The line moves deceivingly slow. The baked goods were decent. Portions were small. Like just a few bites and it was gone. For the price point it really was not worth it. Starting at $5 a pop, i wont bother with it again. The takeout boxes look pretty but are so difficult to carry as they are awkward, my dessert was toppled over and smashed during transport with my drinks. I would rather have a ugly box that didnt ruin my dessert bc its so awkward to carry. The drinks and ice cream were disappointing. The flavour was bland and it didnt have a good green tea flavour to the drink. There was either too much milk or too much ice. Again prices ranging from $5-$9 a peice the portion was too small for the price. I honestly could not tell the difference between this place and starbucks. Only starbucks you get twice as much for the same price. The ice cream was decent. Different because it was soft serve. But was very soft and ended up melting so fast. I had the float and the ice cream was already liquidy at the bottom melting when it was handed to me. It is a good concept becuse theres really no other place like it in the city. But the flavours lack substance. And the wait is ridiculous. I tried it and done it and wont be rushing back.

Another new dessert spot to open downtown, Tsujiri, specializes in matcha desserts. They're a very popular chain from Japan that began back in 1860. It's close by to CoCo's and ChixShack. We dropped in for a Tuesday afternoon snack (around 3:45pm) and it was packed. The line wasn't as long as I'd seen the day before walking around downtown but it went back to the entrance. Crazy. Service is friendly but a tad slow. I'm sure they'll work out the kinks with time. There's room to sit when you walk further inside (with about 16 seats). There's also a washitsu room, which was hidden but cool to find. The menu is up front; o-matcha, sencha, other Japanese tea, latte; ice blended, float, parfait, soft cream and shaved ice. Hilarious that they call the vanilla mix soft cream "good for matcha beginners". They also had a few Japanese desserts (kinako daifuku, matcha daifuku and yuzu tarts) available at the counter. - Tsujiri matcha soft cream (#53) ($5.75) - matcha flavour was really good. If you like strong matcha, get this! If you don't, try it anyways. - Shiratama parfait (#51) ($8.00) - the parfait had mochi balls, chestnut, red bean and you could choose your soft serve flavour (we went with vanilla mix). About time we got quality soft serve in the city. Pretty close to what I had in Japan.

Holding the reins for tradition and quality, Tsujiri is one of the most well known tea shops to have been able to successfully keep standards high while becoming more global. A buildup of excitement leading to their grand opening, followed by a grueling 30 minute wait in line to finally be able to try the legendary Matcha shop. I was beyond ecstatic. Shiratama Parfait - (8.25) - Mochi balls were soooo good, this was during my first visit where we didn't think we'd need the vanilla mix for the matcha ice cream. Totally did, the parfait ended up just tasting very heavy without the refreshing aspect. O - Matcha Float - ($8.75) - Icy matcha slurpee topped with more matcha ice cream, is there such thing as too much matcha? Uhm, nope. The two different textures of matcha ended up tasting pretty good. Would order this again! Tsujiri Soft Cream Vanilla Mix - ($5.50) - Thankful for the vanilla mix because without it, the matcha would have been way too overpowering for me to enjoy. This was good, strong robust matcha mellowed down by the vanilla cream. The texture of this soft cream is not ice cream to say the least. You're not getting the creamy milk flavor you'd expect from a soft serve but more icy watery. The twisted soft cream was served in a waffle cone that did not meet the standards to the matcha. Like stale thin crackers, ended up grabbing a spoon to scoop out the cream and throwing out 90% of the cone. Kinako Daifuku - ($5.00) - Essentially a very soft mochi stuffed with soybean dusted with roasted soybean powder. Paired with a hot tea, I can see why this would taste good. We paired iit with a float and parfait, which was not such a great pairing. The texture is nothing like i've felt before, its gooey and breaks apart easily but doesn't quite stick to your fingers. Very mild flavor overall you'll have to like soybean for this one. Cream Puff - ($3.00) - The matcha cream filling was so thick while the shell was flakey and puffy. This was a good bite! Now to the main reason why I'd go back. Yuzu Tart - ($5.25) - Crust is great, yuzu filling is amazing. Sweet but with a subtle tart aftertaste. My favorite item ever. Worth it. Overall, I think the hype for Tsujiri has died down (HENCE NO LINE UP YA'LL), and only true matcha lovers will find themselves coming back here. For me, it was pretty underwhelming to say the least. Won't be actively seeking to come here for dessert.

Newly opened along 109 St and just north of Jasper, expect to wait in line out the door. We waited a total of 30 min (timed from standing in line to having our order in hand), although some people were in line for roughly 40 min. Is the food worth the wait in line? Honestly, no. Although I hear the daifuku is amazing; I wouldn't know though, they were all sold out of them by the time I was there. For those already familiar with the matcha dessert joints around the world, you'll find pretty standard fare here - soft ice cream, drinks (hot and cold), parfaits and shaved ice. One difference is that they serve daifuku, "cookie puffs", tarts and cakes as well. Another bonus: a lot of yuzu (Japanese citrus - and one of my faves!) is featured on the menu. My friends ordered the chiffon parfait - moist, subtle matcha flavor for the chiffon. I personally would have liked the cake to have a bit more matcha flavor to it. One friend said the portion size was a little too small. Both friends said they enjoyed the parfait, but agreed that they wouldn't wait in such a long line for the same item. My friend and I both ordered the yuzu float- mine with matcha ice cream, hers with a matcha- vanilla twist. (it's recommended on the menu that those "new" to matcha get the matcha- vanilla twist ice cream to curb its bitterness; I had no issues with the straight up matcha). Standard drink size, chunks of yuzu peel in the drink. Good strong matcha flavor to the soft cream. Nice refreshing drink for a hot day. Once again, an item not worth waiting 30 min for though. Service seemed fairly friendly; not particularly speedy, but given the time it takes to scoop out the parfait items (which seemed to be the most popular order), I guess it's fairly understandable. It's a fairly small establishment with limited seating. Didn't seem ideal for large groups as most of the tables just sit 2 unless you move tables around. There is just one large table, and some bar style seating along the front window. Paid street parking out front (limited, due to all the other nearby businesses). Parking is free after 10pm.

A matcha lovers haven! This is a beautiful little Edmonton gem and a killer tea date with friends spot. The menu is quite wide with lots of matcha options- from lattes and special drinks, to classic matcha, matcha moochi desserts, cake, matcha and hot chocolate, and of course matcha ice cream. If you don't like matcha they do have some options but by far this is a matcha focused joint. Parking wasn't bad and we found pay parking right out front, on a Friday night after 6pm it was only $1. Otherwise note that it is downtown so expect downtown parking. The seating is really unique too with some tall barstool areas, coffee shop tables of 4, and a little semi private room for about 6 people. Staff there are incredibly sweet, we came with a child and they were super friendly to us even though he was curious and exploring quite a bit. They even gave him a cookie which was lovely. I have to admit I stole a bite of his cookie just so I could tell you all that is was delightful and melts in your mouth. But do note I didn't see any baby change tables or high chairs so it's not a totally baby friendly cafe. What to order: if you are up to try matcha on its own this is the place, my husband described it as a close your eyes sensory experience with so many layers. We had the whipped azuki matcha latte - red beans on a latte were my absolute favourite! I wish there had been more red beans yet on it! The creamy white chocolate mocha - smooth and dreamy creamy, perfect to warm you right up. Houjicha chai latte - not too spicy but had the classic chai flavours but the smoothness and elegance of something maybe even a little bit more. Shiratama parfait - delightful and a good portion even though it looked small at first. The rice balls were similar to tapioca from bubble tea so I loved it of course. I would love to go back and try the other two parfaits. And the desserts- honestly you could order any of the ones in the display case and it's sure to please!

Awesome atmosphere. The staffs there are so nice and friendly. I tried greentea latte and my friend had the parfait. Both were significantly authentic. We also had thr macha cream puffs, acha cheese cake and macha mochi (I forgot its name), they are really good

Matcha Black Sesame Latte ($6.75+tax) tasted more like black sesame with milk. There was a hint of matcha flavour though. Edmonton was getting cold, so this warm drink was gooooodd!! However, I think I would prefer just the Matcha Latte drinks instead. Matcha Rare Cheesecake ($5.75+tax) was creamy and had strong matcha flavour! Super delicious! Lovedddd it! My fave dessert! Yuzu Tart ($5.25+tax) was nommy as well! Personally, I don't really like sour desserts, but this was actually pretty good! Normally, the yuzu flavour desserts don't have much of the "yuzu" taste, but this tart had quite a strong yuzu flavour! Not bad! Overall, I love anything that has matcha in it! I can't wait for Vancouver location to open. Is it still "opening soon"? What's taking them so long to open in Vancouver? I feel like it's been 6 yrs since they announced it..... Highly recommend this place for the matcha lovers.

I love matcha, everything from traditional lattes, cakes, to matcha cream filled chocolate truffles. So not surprisingly, it is a dream come true for me that Tsujiri opened in Edmonton! Since it's only been open for 4 days now, there was quite a line outside even at 2 pm. We had to wait about 45 mins before we actually had our first sip. But this will obviously die down over the next couple of weeks after everyone has had a chance to try their menu. Their menu itself is surprisingly large. There are many varieties of lattes, teas, floats and blended drinks in addition to the parfaits, ice creams, and baked products. I started with the iced O-matcha latte (classic) and the matcha cream puff as I wanted to try uncomplicated products for my first visit and just focus on the grade and quality of the matcha itself. AND IT WAS AMAZING! i have never been to Japan, but I would bet that this is the best matcha that we can get in Canada. The latte was perfectly balanced with the milk and did not have an aftertaste that you can sometimes get in poor preparations in other places (not naming names). The matcha cream in the puff was stronger (more bitter) but I loved it even more than the latte! The interior is black and a muted gold, it looks very sophisticated and calming. There is seating for about 12-15 people inside and despite of the line we got a nice little table to ourselves. The staff are very nice inspite of being so busy. I still want to try the parfait and the daifuku so I will definitely be going back very soon.

A 158 year old family tradition. This is a sixth generation tea empire. Quality matcha shipped in directly from Japan. The staff is very warm, welcoming and knowledgeable. All of the menu is made from high quality ingredients. Lattes, tea, blended ice, parfaits, shaved ice. All of them are beautifully presented and refreshing. Pastries are made in house as well. Soy and lactose free substitutes are available for all of the drink menu choices. Matcha soft serve is also very popular. Where else can you get super caffeinated ice cream? There is a "Washitsu" for special events and the ambience is very relaxed and enjoyable. It is a smaller space with 5 lower tables and some higher "bar seating" facing the street. Reservations are recommended for the Washitsu. Not a lot of free parking available but pay parking is located close by. This is an accessible venue.

Ok if Starbucks green tea frappe is your jam, this might be something to try if you want to taste legit matcha. Be warned that traditional matcha is very bitter, so it is nowhere near the sweetness of a green tea frappe. In fact, if you are a matcha newbie, do as they recommend and try it with half vanilla soft serve if you go for the ice cream. You won't regret it. They even prepare green tea the traditional way with the whisk & everything, just as how I experienced it in a tea house in Tokyo...brings back memories... I would highly recommend that if you are going with just the matcha drink, you buy one of the desserts on display too. When I was in Japan, that's how it was served, because the sweetness of the dessert is meant to balance out the taste of the matcha. The wait time is not bad depending on what time of day you go, but there is very limited seating, so be prepared to take your treats to go. On the other side, the to-go boxes are so chic...it's like a giftbox. And presentation of their desserts are true to photo, almost everything we ordered was Instagram worthy. I'm not matcha obsessed, and it is a little but pricy, but honestly, the portion was enough to get my fill of matcha without feeling gross after. So it's a nice treat to have once in a while, especially if you want to avoid something overly sweet.

It's only been a week since it opened but the hype that its garnered is well deserved. The meticulous nature of the pastry chefs as they assemble each order is something very appreciated. The flavours all complement each other. Matcha is a very subtle taste to begin with and the add-ons only add but never mask the pure nature of the matcha. ITADAKIMASU

The store is often busy with a line out the door, especially on Friday and Saturday after 9 a.m. Here's a few tips to be a better patron and have a better experience: Breads can be ordered online for quick in-store pickup. Some items are made daily, some on certain days only, it's all listed online. They will slice your bread in the store for you if you like. Come as close to opening as possible for best selection, especially on one-off days, e.g. - bagels made only on Wednesdays sell out quickly. They also have a lovely European and Canadian cheese selection! Consider browsing their current cheeses online, as there are many beautiful cheeses but no space to really ogle at them in the store. Come in prepared to avoid hovering for too long in the small customer space. There are a couple other regular non-bread items, like honey, traditional dijon, coffee beans, rillettes/terrine, French butter and recently a small selection of deli meat. One could almost make a mixed charcuterie plate after a quick visit here. Parking behind the business is tight but doable. Street parking is available within quick walking distance in the adjacent neighbourhood. Only d-bags park right out front on 99 Ave, thus blocking an entire lane of traffic. I've noticed it's usually mid-age women in expensive SUVs. Goes with the hood I guess. Eat high-quality bread and be happy!

Located on Alberta Avenue, Popular Bakery fits well into the multicultural atmosphere of the area as a Portuguese bakery and restaurant. One of the few places where one can sit with a cup of coffee and enjoy conversation with friends (except when community coffeehouse The Carrot is open), Portuguese Bakery sells fresh baked goods, sandwiches made to order, and a few hot entree items such as Portuguese flame-grilled chicken and pork. A cooler contains a variety of beverages, both domestic and imported from Portugal, and there are a few short aisles of groceries, again, mostly Portuguese. Despite being large and spacious, tables are precious few. I can imagine this place getting very full at lunch time, and doing a mostly take-out business. I was there around four in the afternoon, and the tables were around half full, mostly with older Portuguese men and women sitting around enjoying coffee and pastries, speaking in their mother tongue. My server was Portuguese, and I really felt like I had stepped into another culture - which is exactly what I want when I am visiting an ethnic establishment. I ordered a quarter chicken meal with french fries (my other choice was rice) and a salad (which comes with the meal). I was asked if I wanted my food served regular or spicy and I opted for regular. My food was brought out to me a few minutes later, and consisted of a large plate almost overflowing with chicken, fries, and salad. The salad was a mix of vegetables in a light, almost Italian style vinagrette with a bit of a salty kick to it. The fries were average, but crispy. I thought perhaps they might make their own here, but I was wrong. The chicken, however, was the star of the show. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, the meat was infused with a tangy season mix in oil, accented with salt and garlic. The grilled flavour of the chicken came through as well. Instead of giving me an entire dark or white quarter, I had a wing, a chunk of thigh, and two chunks of white meat. I enjoyed the variety, and it also made the meal easier to eat. For dessert, I decided to try one of the many tempting treats in the bakery's showcase. An egg tart is a standard Portuguese favourite of mine and they were here, but looked rather burned. Some of the other items, such as danishes, eclairs, and other pastries looked delicious, but a bit too much to follow the meal I had. I opted for what looked like a smaller dessert - a slice of caramel pudding. As soon as my server handed me the plate, I thought my arm would drop. It was heavy for such a small slice! I also had a cup of coffee to accompany my dessert and keep me occupied as I finished reading a book. The pudding reminded me of the filling of an egg tart, very firm in texture. The caramel part was probably the light syrup at the bottom of the slice, which tasted more like a lightly burned sugar than caramel. It was good, though, and it took me a while to fork my way through it. The big disappointment of the afternoon was the coffee. It was very, very average. However, it was also inexpensive. The price for a meal is in the $7-$10 range. The sandwiches are on fresh bread or rolls and include a variety of meats. There is also soup. I plan to come here again to have more chicken and try the rice. Portuguese Bakery closes daily at 6:00 p.m. and is closed on Sundays.
