More of a 3.5 star place, but rounding up since I thought I got good value for the money and having more culinary options in an area is always beneficial. Tsunami Sushi Bar and Grill is located in strip mall near the office I was working at, and some of the local staff mentioned it was a lunchtime favorite. The interior is a cookie-cutter of any Japanese / sushi joint in America. There is a counter off to the right when you walk in where can sit and watch the chefs prepare the rolls if that's your preference. Otherwise, the decor is laminate flooring with dark wooden tables and chairs, and a mid-height wall separating the dining room punctuated with Japanese themed art work on the walls. I ordered the sushi bento lunch box, and for $13...it was a very good deal! Tempura fried veggies were lightly battered and fried to a nice crisp without being soggy. The California roll was a bit heavy on the rice, but otherwise inoffensive and had that familiar flavor profile of imitation crab meat mixed in with cucumber and avocado. I thought the teriyaki chicken with fried rice was the highlight. The chicken had a nice charred flavor from the flat top and was not drowning in sweet soy sauce, as is prepared at most places. And there was plentiful fried rice, which again, had a nice smoky charred flavor. It was a generous portion size, and enough that I had half to take home for dinner that night. Is Tsunami the most authentic Japanese restaurant you'll find? No. But for the Rio Grande Valley, it is a change-up and pleasant surprise. read more

We ate at Tsunami sushi bar last night for the first time in about two years. Service was friendly, ambience is OK, and the food was excellent. I had them make a special platter of Nigiri sushi for me, and it was very, very good. My husband had the bento box and was super pleased with it. The food is alright. I got the yakisoba combo with chicken. The food wasn't warm enough when I received it. Our server might be new, he took forever with the drinks. When we finished our drinks, it took awhile for our server to give us refills, mind you it's a Monday and there was one other table. My dad loves this place and every time we come the service gets worse and worse. It was his birthday and the service is not so great. First time eating here. Novice sushi eater. The sexy roll is delicious. Paired it with a coke zero and gyoza. I absolutely enjoyed my food. I was not expecting to get a huge roll. I shouldn't have ordered gyoza because i started getting pretty full. It was 4:30-5pm when I got here and there weren't a lot of people so that was nice. The service was fast, and the lady attending was super polite and gave great recommendations. I will definitely be coming back and bringing family here. I noticed on the drinks menu that they have Lucky Buddha in their imported beer. That's a bit of a rare sight, so I will be coming back for that, haha. read more

I've always enjoyed Tsunamis sushi, fried rice, and calamari, but the ambiance takes away from the experience therefore not a five star review. The lights are bright white and the environment isn't every inviting but we enjoyed our experience, the waiter was helpful and courteous, overall good experience! read more

Drove over from Mercedes for dinner. Ordered sashimi & 2 hand rolls. Nice big cuts of fish on the sashimi but the hand rolls were so full of rice, avocado & cucumber that it only had about a tablespoon of fish. It should go without saying, sushi should NEVER have cream cheese in it. Unfortunately Tsunami is not the only restaurant in McAllen that does this. And it's wrong. Also, the sashimi here is not good. Probably all days old, and you are not getting a proper sashimi cut per piece. On the topic of fish, your options are limited anyway. Most of what they fill the rolls with are imitation crab or frozen shrimp. Even the fillings are mostly carrots and cabbage. That's not what's supposed to go into sushi rolls. All that said though, the service and staff are very friendly and helpful. The manager is very kind and makes it a point to build relationships with the community. The yakimeshi beef had great flavor to the meat although I think it was a bit over cooked. Would have been. Juicer if it had been more on the medium side. The fried rice was delicious. The spicy edamame was the best I've had here in the valley so far. Just the right amount of spice and salt. The hand rolls were nicely filled and rolled, Lots of filling. Didn't fall apart. The octopus was not chewy at all but it could have used some acidity to bring out the flavor. The unagi had great flavor. The 3 stars are due to most of the rolls on the menu having an element of cream cheese. I'm lactose intolerant and I've never seen so many rolls containing cheese. It might just be a valley thing since that has not been the case in other cities I've lived in and/or visited but it seems to be a thing here. If they had more options I'd definitely give them at least 4 stars, especially since the service was so great! read more

I used to like this place a lot, but it's going down hill. I ordered their lent special of shrimp fried rice a Cali and Philly roll. The fried rice was 3 battered shrimp on an unappealing bed if what was supposed to be fried rice(no onion or vegetables). The Cali and Philly rolls are nothing special, but when I got my check the prices were jacked up and not the prices from the menu. How are you gonna charge me 10$ for a Philly roll when it says 6.99 and over charge me for a Cali roll as well. I would never pay 10$ for a Philly roll. I'd just buy something else. There wasn't even a heads up the price on the menu is incorrect. I'll have to reevaluate if I ever come back. read more

almost 1 hour for my order to be ready. when i got there at about 8:25... the cashier said it would take "a couple minutes" after 13 minutes i asked again how much longer, the girl said "its almost out" after 25 minutes she said there were a lot more orders ahead. i left... no one ever bothered to apologize. this is totally unacceptable customer service. the cashier (idk her name) she was wearing a black cat suit with a fluffy tail for halloween. i called after a total of 1hour... and they said "oh yes, now its ready" maybe invest in peoper customer service training for your staff. customers just need a better experience. i get that yall were busy, but a quick "sorry /i apologize for the wait time" goes a long way and will only take 2 seconds of their time. that girl, as i mentioned, never apologized or said thank you. and i would ask her if she could check the status, but she would just stand there chit chatting with the rest of your crew and look at me from the corner of her eye. read more

They have issues understanding English and I don't know Sushi terms in Spanish, so that was annoying. Ultimately the food was good, does sometimes take a long time but fresh tasting. I am taking off a star because last time I went there was a strong order of fake strawberry and I could never figure out where it was coming from, it was too strong. Finally my daughter bent down under the table to grab something and noticed a fragrance plug-in was plugged into the actual bench I was sitting at and I was accidentally knocking into the outlet with the back of my leg. I was greeted by an pretty decrepit looking sign in the front. Sushi was pretty good, but the service was quite poor. Ended up waiting a while around noon which is fine, though I was the only one sitting down in the restaurant during lunch "rush". However I spent just as long waiting for my food as I did my ticket, and wasn't much impressed with the syrup pourer sauce dispensers. Trying to pour any sauce that wasn't soy sauce was impossible, and I questioned how long the spicy mayo stayed room temperature in it's container. It didn't feel clean, and I wasn't comfortable eating raw fish here. Overall, decent sushi, albeit at strange prices that don't really make sense (cheap rolls are strangely high priced), but poor service. Hoping it performs better in the future. read more
