We needed to have the catalytic converter replaced on our 15-year-old Honda Accord. The local dealer had advised us to find somebody else to do the work because he said Honda charges a lot for catalytic converters. We called Tuffy, talked to Todd Williamson, and got what we thought was a reasonable quote, took the car in on the following Saturday, and they were very quick with the replacement. Cedar Falls Tuffys is the worst auto shop I have ever been to. we had our can towed there because it wouldn't start. they said it needed a new starter. we got it home and it wouldn't start. we towed it back there, they fixed some wiring to the starter and said we might need a new battery. We got it home and the next time we used it, it didn't start. we called them and they said we need to try to jump it before towing it again, as it must be a defective battery since we didn't get it from them. I said I will NOT be towing it again. We towed it somewhere else and they said it needed a new starter. sparks were flying everywhere from it. Tuffys will NOT stand by their shoddy work. read more

I trust Greg at Tuffy.   The service is prompt, and they do it right.  John Z's review worries me a bit, but I've asked around and I don't know anyone in town who thinks they were overcharged at Tuffy.  There have been times when Greg's said things like, "This will have to be replaced eventually, but we can wait on it for awhile" when he COULD have gotten away with telling me to replace it now and I would have.  They will also give you rides places in town after you've dropped your car off. read more

Excellent customer service. Was recommended to the store by a friend of mine who owns the store in Ankeny, and we were treated first class from the beginning. Made an appointment for my daughters car that had a service engine light on and upon arrival they did a full and thorough inspection of the vehicle and determined that the oil level was low. Changed the oil added a new filter and send her out the door for under $60. They did not try and add on anything that was not necessarily need to be done. Including offering at some point for a brake job but was it not needed at that moment when they very well could've added it just to make a quick dollar read more

Always exceptionally great service, always extremely clear with the work they're doing and done ahead of estimated schedule. Never pressure to do additional work, while informative in what they see as upcoming service. The shuttle is very convenient, and when it's not available (Saturdays) they still go out of their way to provide a ride. The one time a mistake was made replacing my power steering pump ~3 years ago, they took my car back the next day, got the replacement part, and fixed it for no cost. I would not recommend going here. It's been a while since I came in, but I will never forget how badly I was screwed. Came in for shocks which they couldn't get for some reason and ended up getting a control arm "replaced" (didn't need). Checked the car out underneath after the fact and it was obvious that they didn't actually replace it because the bushings were discolored and worn on both sides still. I've also taken in a car to see what they say needs fixed, go to another shop and they say that none of those items actually need replacement. If you do go here, do yourself a favor and get a second opinion before agreeing to anything. read more

Took my car in to have them check out a specific issue with the brakes and they inspected everything with the car. For free. Greg was great to deal with and got me answers quickly. His team did a great job explaining what was found and best/worst case scenarios without pressuring to get the work done there. I needed a new muffler put on my pick-up. I called one day to set up the appointment, got it in the next day at lunch, picked it up after work. I had called around to three different places. I had initially posted negative review but am returning to post a correction and update. My dissatisfaction originated with a brake inspection. Greg and his men found deteriorated brake pads during routine inspection. My opposing opinion was based on my inspection of a separate tire. It was only after I had removed both rear tires that I saw that Greg and his technicians were indeed correct. Therefore, I want to send a big "Thank You" to Greg and his team for catching this, standing firm and pointing me in the right direction. I won't bore you with the details but I took my car in due to temperature gauge ready hot and warning message coming on. I am from out of town visiting relatives and it was on a Sat. So not many options to find a place open. The short of it is that I was told it needed a water pump, thermostat, and sensor for $1,800 but then told they made a mistake and they could do it for $1,400. I decided to take it to another place and got it fixed for $180.00 as it only needed a sensor. Pretty scary for those of you who live in Cedar Falls. read more
