TLDR: Pleasant counter experience and quick service. Bad follow-through. I had an unfortunate time on Saturday where I came out to my car in the middle of errands and it was dead. I got a jump from a hero and was able to get over to Tuffy. They fit me in with no appointment - and quickly! They were informative and quick. I left happy with a new battery and confident that my alternator and starter were fine. I was able to make my gig a couple of hours away and get back home. Fast forward to Sunday morning with a dead car in my driveway. Come to find out that the tech didn't clean off the corrosion on the leads from the previously bad battery and they didn't tighten down the negative either! I missed church, some work and had to spend time on the issue myself. Couldn't leave a message at the store during off hours. Left an email contact form on the Brakes Plus (Tuffy got bought) website and still waiting for a response. read more

Went here to get my spark plugs replaced. $700 and a week later, I got my car back. And I was having the same problems. They told me transmission. Went to a different (actually knowledgeable) mechanic, and learned that Tuffy's botched it. The one spark plug (yes, $700 for one spark plug and one ignition coil!) Wasn't screwed in all the way!! And there was oil getting in and burning up, causing even worse jolting than before. Talentless hacks. read more

Today I was in the Cedar Rapids area and I had a check engine light come on in my car.. I live in Central Iowa so I was concerned to continue driving my car the 100 miles with the check engine light on back home... I stopped into Tuffy's on Edgewood and they were able to hook it up to their computer. The diagnosis was a vapor issue which would not prevent me to continue my journey back home. So I want to thank Adam and the service technician that were able to ease my mind and send me on my way. They were courteous, friendly and efficient. My daughter's car was towed there on a Friday night. They stayed open to check her in. Although no one likes to hear bad news at least I felt comfortable once Corey explained the issues to me. He offered to send me pictures of the fuel system and was helping me check with Chevy on information bulletins and recalls. He offered my daughter the student discount. My truck put me through so much stress every day something broke! i started fixing it than my stomach told me to stop and take it to the shop i took it last saturday and they found that the back end control arms was broke and rotors they fixed them, than yesterday i started hearing noises again in the front end i dropped the truck off today they fixed the jam nuts to my car tighten up anything else that was loose i really appreciate this company! read more

My first experience was decent which lead me to make another appointment with them. When I arrived with a nail in my tire they said they didn't have an appointment made and had no time to help me. They said that discount tire could help me, so I went there and discount tire was a great help on the spot. Fast forward a couple months. I scheduled an oil change I show up and there is no record of the appointment. I leave and head to work. Showed up today and yet again no appointment found. 3rd strike I'm done with them. read more

Went in with a oil leak. Was told that after inspection that it was a bad oil pan gasket. After $800.00 there was still a leak. I brought it back in and after another inspection I was told that now it was the rear main seal. Was quoted $2000.00. Needless to say I will not be returning. read more

This place is awful, bait and switch. They have done it to me the last two times now. This time I had a coupon, told them it upfront when I set up the appointment, showed it to them when I dropped it off, texted them about it again when they texted me the authorization that did not recognize it "It's OK, we will figure it in when you pay". When I get there to pick up my car, manager states "that coupon is no good for synthetic oil". Then he seemed to remember that I had addressed it several times, and said "I'll give you a discount" but only took $6 off -- so overpaid by $25. He also refused to turn off my check engine light even though I paid $300 for a new belt, because I would not purchase $2000 in their bs maintenance jobs. I have full documentation of both of these encounters if they try to dispute this review. Place is absolutely awful, buyer beware. I will never go back to this place. read more

Lucas was super helpful in getting my tire changed for me to my spare when it went flat just around the corner from the shop. He walked with me all the way over to my car, pulled it into the bay, and had it changed for me right away. Took my car there for a simple oil change. Staff is friendly and oil change is done in time. When picking up the car I noticed they used 0w20 from the receipt, different from what the dealer used on the Audi. I asked and the manager explained that it's up to VW's specification (VW 502 00). He sounds knowledgable so I left without any question. I should say that I would have still been a returning customer at this point. In fact while I declined their recommended service, I did want to come back for some exhaust work with them. It just so happened that the second day I was on the phone with Audi of America for something unrelated and I happened to ask them about the oil standard. AoA said 0w20 does NOT meet VW 502 00 standard. I called Tuffy immediately and explained the issue. Manager assured me what they used is compliant with VW 502 00 and provided me with a reference to the TSB published in 2017. He also said he can swap the oil out and put what I want in, as long as I either bring my own, or buy it from them. But to me the bigger question is, is 0w20 complaint, as I dont want to void the engine warranty. So I asked about the specific brand and type of oil used, was told Dexos 0w-20 (the receipt shows Northland 0w20 oil). I called AoA again and also my dealership just to double check, and both are very adamant that 0w-20 is non-compliant, no matter the brand, and the use of non-compliant oil might just be a cause to decline warranty claim. Now to give Tuffy the benefit of the doubt, I did some extra homework. Apparently Audi/VW updates their TSB on engine oil every once in a while, and in all the revisions made in the last 5 years, 0w-20 was never listed until 2017 where it's listed under VW 508 and 509. So I called Tuffy again, pointing out what I've found. This time I was told they don't have time to look at this yet and will give me a call - And I'm still waiting for the call. Honestly I'm not sure what to think at this point. It's not like 0w-40 is much more expensive. I picked up 5qt of that synthetic for under 30 bucks. But at this point for those of us who really want to take care of our cars, the sloppiness and unwillingness to own the problem is a big no no. (will update if they ever call) read more

Prior to moving from CR I visited Tuffy S.W. for regular oil changes. I have no complaints. The waiting area is nice and the staff was always very friendly; offering me something to drink, a ride if necessary and always left a flower in my car after oil changes. My husband and I had a rare day off together, so of course we decided to get our oil changed. We made an appointment last night, and dropped both cars off shortly after 8 am today. We headed over to Starbucks where we were meeting friends. About a half hour later my phone rang. They explained that my left front tie rod was bad, something I had suspected. Of course we made the decision to replace both. He also mentioned it was making my tires wear unevenly. I informed him I was intending to buy 4 new tires in a couple of months, and he agreed I should do that as soon as possible. He also mentioned some corrosion on my battery, and said that since it was such a good quality battery he would clean it off. In the course of the conversation I mentioned the fact I had new wiper blades in the back which I had not put on yet. They also replaced those for free. Shortly afterwards they called back about my husband's Yukon. We determined that the problem they found there could wait. I was quoted a price, and we finished our coffee. When we returned shortly thereafter we found both vehicles done, at the price they quoted us. Now if this was the end of it, I would have considered it a wonderful experience....but wait, there's more! A few hours later, while driving across town, I realized my Honda CRV no longer sounded like a bucket of bolts in a washing machine. It took me a couple of minutes, but I realized they had also taken care of a heat shield that had been rattling forever! Tuffy has earned our loyalty, and we will happily use them for our automotive needs from now on. read more

This place is a complete scam 20/20 should do a hidden camera show on them I dropped my truck off because I had a bad u-joint they told me they would call me with an estimate Lucas the young man behind the counter called me to tell me the bid to replace the U-joint would be $475 I started laughing at this guy on the phone so one would think at this point he would know he didn't have a live one on the phone but nope so then he says well there is more I stopped him at this point to tell him the bids without supplying the parts which now I was and he let me know that because I did that the cost went up because I saved them time and having to go get that part, were half of what he was asking that still didn't stop this young con artist from trying to take advantage of a person he then tells me the oil cap on the top of the engine wasn't tightened down so it needs an oil change and an air filter his estimate came to a total of $1800 in repairs then he tried to actually scare me that my vehicle wasn't road safe I am absolutely furious that one person would blatantly try to take advantage of someone like this for shame Tuffy this will not be the last you hear from me I will be filing a complaint with the BBB as well as contacting the Tuffy corporation because that is a chain I was willing to pay $275 which was higher than any bid I had received because they were going to get it in and my back is not good enough to do my own work anymore but to basically spit in my face like that I will not stand for.How this place continues to do business is beyond me and it actually makes me sad for the people who left you a good review I will be taking my truck to dans tires and more in Mechanicsville Ia which is where I am originally from where people treat people kindly and not like a mark anyone seeing this please take your vehicle there before you go to these con artists their $1800 repair at dans with tires will be 1/4 the cost read more

With my daughter hours away at college I had to have her car towed overnight. It was towed too Tuffy Auto Center. They were very polite on the phone with me and diagnosed the car needed a new battery along with a brake fluid flush and a new Serpentine belt. I asked for only the battery. My disappointment was the fact that they charged over 230.00 for battery and installation. Being a couple hours away I didn't have much of a choice. Not very happy! I would like to update my review. I spoke with the people at Tuffy and we discussed my issues and they made it right with me. I fell good now to send my daughter back with her auto repair needs. Don't waste your time going there. They gouge you on repairs and if you apply for one of their loan options, drain you dry. And Isaiah, the manager... let's just say he is one of the biggest a--holes I've ever met in my life! He's rude, arrogant and cares more about putting his time in and punching out then he does about the customer. First of all, I must point out that it is EXTREMELY hard nowadays to find a car place that won't try to dupe you into paying a lot more for a new this and a new that, when in actuality you didn't really need them. So imagine my surprise when I called up Tuffy's asking about their tire service and was honestly told that I could find cheaper tires at a few recommended shops. if there is one thing I admire greatly in businesses it is HONESTY. Since they did me such a favor, I figured I would go to them for an oil change (it was the least I could do!). I made an appointment (highly recommend doing this, as these places stay busy) and when I showed up, the man at the computer checked me in and asked if I would like a bottle of water or anything while I waited. I felt that this was extremely considerate as the other car shops barely offer you day-old coffee. And wal-mart doesn't even offer that(but wal-mart is a completely different story in regards to their "car service" center)! My oil change took the typical amount of time, about 20-30 minutes, and when it was just about complete the assistant manager came and sat by me in the waiting area and discussed how things looked in my car. They have a little dish where they put samples of your fluids to show you exactly how everything looks. Another aspect that I love about this Tuffy center is that they were not pushy AT ALL! There was some corrosion on my battery but I explained that I could get rid of that on my own, and instead of trying to talk me into having to pay extra for them to do it, he gave me tips on how to get rid of the stuff myself. Love love LOVE the customer service that I received here. Not to mention the quality of the job they did. Tuffy also uses a higher grade oil so that instead of getting and oil change every 3000 miles (as recommended), their oil is good for 5000 miles, which saves you money in the long run. My only regret is that I did not find this place sooner and save myself the headache of dealing with "bargain" car service centers. Another aspect I would like to touch on, the people here are so dedicated to your and your car's well-being. When I called to ask about tires and was kindly directed to another place, Dave(the assistant manager) still stayed on the phone with me to answer the many questions I had about tires and even told me what tires HE uses on his own car and how well they've worked for him. Had a fair amount of work done here, about $2000 on a 2004 Santa Fe. We had a check engine light go off and one thing led to another: ruptured power steering hose, coil packs, spark plugs and wires. I didn't argue, followed their recommendations. We had 120K miles so I knew work needed took be done. Always trust a mechanic, especially if you don't know what is wrong. This guy comparing about brakes and rotors, good night have the time you have to flip rotors out, let it go.... . Anyway I think they did the best job and always completed work on time. I got to ask lots of questions and a lot of places don't teacher much time out to do that. read more

Tried this Tuffy out to see what their service was like. I knew my car needed brake work. They said the front driver's caliper was sticking but they could recondition it (instead of having to replace it), and I was fine with that. They replaced both front rotors, all front pads, and reconditioned the front driver's caliper. They also said I had a coolant leak. I did notice a slow leak and agreed to let them test things. They found the leak and I gave the OK to repair it. I also requested that the transmission fluid be changed. The price for everything wasn't outrageous, but was a bit high compared to other estimates I got. I decided to have the work done at Tuffy, again, to see what their service was like. If their service would've been good I could've taken paying a little more. The work was done overnight and I picked up my car the next day. The front driver's brake was grinding so I went back a couple days later and was told that it was due to "things breaking in" and if it didn't clear up in another couple days to bring it back in. It didn't clear up - no surprise there - and I took it back in. They said the caliper was sticking and they supposedly got it fixed for sure the second time. No additional charge for that. A couple days later the front driver's brake was grinding again. When I took my car back in the third time - to have the front driver's brake looked at and when they supposedly fixed the caliper for good - they said I needed my transmission fluid changed. I said, "Huh?! I just had it changed." After some typing on the keyboard the manager said that it looked like they had two records for my car in their system. He supposedly combined them both so something like that wouldn't happen again. He then proceeded to say again that the transmission fluid needed changed, that it looked old/worn. I said it had been less than 10K miles since I had it changed and I asked why the fluid looked old/worn. He just looked at the monitor and didn't say anything. That was the last time I went there and I won't go back there again. About two months later my check engine light lit up and I noticed my engine was running a little hot. I knew what it was before I even opened my hood: the coolant was low. They hadn't repaired the leak in the cooling system properly and/or they missed another leak. Just reinforced my decision to spend my hard-earned money somewhere else. read more

I can't say enough about their customer service! Fast, friendly and efficient! I don't know if I just received the royal treatment or what but they picked up my car while I was at work and returned it before I was finished for the day. They even left me with the keys to a loaner in case I needed to run somewhere at lunch. They were able to do the repairs under my warranty. The problem was solved! Went in to Tuffy's early on a Saturday morning recently with a turning signal that wasn't working. Had two small kids with me. Figured out it was just the bulb, replaced it, was in/out within 20 minutes with no appointment. Best part was they told me not to worry about the cost of the bulb or labor. Thanks for your help. If there was any way to give these guys 0 stars then I would. For oil changes, they're okay, the price is reasonable and they do a decent job of topping off fluids and getting the job done in a timely manner. That having been said, they are just awful for trying to upsell people (especially women like my mother) on everything under the sun. I understand, as a business, their money is not made on the quick oil changes. But what I will not accept is them trying to upsell me on a safety issue. Brought my vehicle in for a regular oil change, dropped it off, and went to work. Received a call a few hours later saying that my brakes needed replaced. I was surprised at this, as it'd only been a year and a half, but I have lifetime pads elsewhere so told them I would take care of it. Next day, take my car in to get brakes looked at and the mechanic took me out and showed me how much pad was left, well over 6 mm or about 30,000 miles. After calling Tuffys back, the manager could not care less that they were caught in a lie. Tried to explain the situation and tell him why I was upset, because of the safety concern this posed, but he didn't seem to care and ended up hanging up on me as I told him I didn't see a point in returning to them again. I had been going here for regular oil changes for a couple of years or more. EVERY time I had the oil changed they wouldn't record the right miles for the next oil change not reset my notification. Sometimes the miles would be thousands off. Each time I went in it seemed I would come out with more and more wrong with my van. Eventually, they told me I needed over $3,500.00 worth of service and I shouldn't drive my van. This is where I get emotional. I missed many things because I thought I couldn't drive. One income doesn't allow for such drastic repairs. My husband had to go to Ohio for 5 days over Thanksgiving due to a family issue and because of work, I wasn't able to go. Because of what Tuffy's told me, I sat in my house for 5 days with no vehicle. No way to go anywhere for fear I would do more damage. I was talked into by a friend to taking it for another estimate some where else. The guy called me back and said.. Well..I could replace a gasket if you really want me to but you don't need it and no!! Your wheel bearing is NOT going out. Since my incident I have heard of many more stories just like mine. You tube it.. You'll see!! My advice... Get yourself another place to go or at the very least..A second estimate/opinion before you believe! read more

I was a loyal Tuffy's customer for 6 years. When Joe was the manager it was a great place and I always got treated fairly and honestly. I even recommended them to others. Then last spring a new manager came in and acted shady but I couldn't pinpoint it. This fall I came in for an oil change and suddenly my car needed a lot of work done to it. The brake pads I understood, not the rotors. I was told if I came in within the next few months and got the pads replaced I'd be fine. I came in 3 months later (I don't drive a lot) and was told my rotors needed replaced. When I said no, they gave me discounts to match the price of what I was quoted last fall in case they needed replaced. I went ahead and replaced them. Then they ran my debit card wrong and didn't charge me $50 they should have. They call me 10 days later MULTIPLE times wanting me to hurry and call them back. I did, and then asked why there was a over $100 price difference in the rotors I paid for and what I was quoted. The manager stumbled and said I was "upgraded and these would last longer". After talking to other mechanics I found out 1.) I was lied to about the rotors and 2) NONE of the flushes they kept pushing for they said "I needed done", even needed to be done in the first place. Thank GOD I said no to all those flushes! While I did pay the same amount for the brakes and rotors that I was quoted, the point is without the "discount" I would have paid over $100 more and I am PISSED. They did not ask about an upgrade or anything...just tried to screw me over. So I will no longer use them as my mechanic. The new manager is running them down hill and fast. They need Joe back. read more
