Bed of Tulips at the festival.

My friend and I made a special trip for Mother's day weekend to Albany to see the annual Tulip festival. We won't be back! lol The festival is in Washington Park in downtown Albany. The park itself seems nice, and the festival itself is on par with festivals in my home town of Rochester as far as vendors, food trucks, crafts, etc. We were dissapointed in the lack of Information booths, and the lack of tulips. There are many different tulips in the various beds, but not worth the 4 hour drive. We expected tulips as far as the eye can see, this is not the case. If you live in the Albany area, definitely check it out as it's worth your time. You'll have fun seeing the flowers and eating at all the different food vendors. If you're out of area and thinking about making the trip, eh . . ..

How has Tulip Fest not been reviewed? It's a must do if you live locally and a Mother's Day Tradition for many moms in the Capitol Region! Every year the City of Albany and EQX showcases a nice sample of local 518 bands. In the past, I believe EXT may have made some sponsorships and assisted with the music selection. I have to say, I'd like to get on the colloquium committee for the music search because it's inconsistent. Generally we see some great performances, but for the space we have, it could be better. If you like live music or listen to 102.7/ 97.7, you'd like the Tulip Fest! And what isn't there to like about thousands of beautiful vibrant tulips all around? The food selection is ok; food trucks, carnival types and a fairly eclectic. If you don't want to spend 5$ on a water, bring your own and plan on paying 10$ for any real "meal" item. Typically, I bring along my wine tote and a picnic backpack and rage the grassy shaded spots to avoid the long lines, hideously overpriced edibles and enjoy the music. Bring an umbrella, because Tulip Fest is known for rain. Even if it's not when you leave, it will probably before you go home. When you park, park on the other side of Lark towards state or around Jay street. Jay street residents don't appreciate it, but you'll save yourself the trouble of gridlocked traffic for 45 m if you stay on that side of the park. Generally the SUNY side is a $#¡t show! And have fun! It's a cool event!

    I love these!!

Now, it seems to be more of a food truck festival with free music, and the barbeque competition has fallen by the wayside. Whereas once you could walk through the competition area and meet the competitors, stand amazed in awe of their three-foot tall golden trophies from culinary conquests of the past, and smell the ribs from a block or two away, now the competition has all but disappeared. Also, it has morphed from a 2-day event to a 1-day event. The food trucks now are about 20% barbeque themed, with the regular fried sausage, popcorn, fried dough, pizza, etc mixed in. The craft vendors seem to be fewer in number and mostly related to jewelry (boring). The free music is still a "you get what you pay for" proposition: the first band we heard was country/blues cover band and I thought they were decent. The next band we heard was an indie-pop band and their lead singer was terribly off key. After about an hour of being there, we had eaten some food, listened to some music, and had no real reason to stay. It was hot (it always is) despite the slight rain that came and went. It is a shell of what it once was. A fun time can still be had here, but instead of calling it the "Pig Out" they should just call it a "River Festival."
