Cannot say enough good things about our experience with Tully's Training. We recently adopted our pup, Sofia (a pug chihuahua mix), in April and sadly, as with many rescue dogs, she came to us with separation anxiety. After sorting through so many different training programs/businesses, we finally decided to give Tully's a try, especially since they offered a free consultation with no strings attached. We spoke with Claire who was very nice and extremely thorough in her assessment. We opted to go through with a three month, private training program spear headed by our amazing trainer, Sam. She was incredibly patient and knowledgeable; Sofia was so excited to see her come through the door every week. Sofia's behavior from the start of the program to the end is night and day. While we still have work to do to make her 100% comfortable with staying home alone, she has gone from going berserk to quietly sitting on the top of the couch with an occasional bark/whine. Not only were we able to work on her separation anxiety, we also were able to touch on some leash work and steps to build her confidence. Friends have even told us what a difference there is in her behavior. It is important for owners to understand going through a training program is not going to be an overnight fix but a crucial learning tool for every dog parent. We learned so much about our dog and dog behavior from our program that we can now use to continue building our dog's confidence and with dogs we foster. We are excited to continue watching Sofia's confidence grow. I cannot recommend Lisa Aijala from Tully's Training enough - she is a miracle worker!! I am a first time dog owner, became a pup mom to an 8 week old puppy, and started training with Lisa shortly thereafter. In sum, Lisa was not only a dog whisperer to my puppy--using methodical and deliberate steps to teach my puppy a broad range of commands and behaviors--but she was like a puppy therapist for me, answering any and all questions that I had about puppy rearing and encouraging me along the way. After adopting our dog Benny from a shelter, we were in love, but overwhelmed by the work it took to make even small steps in training him ourselves. We looked into other trainers, but quickly realized that we didn't want to use any of the negative reinforcement techniques that they showed us - such as stepping on the leash, shock collars, food deprivation, etc. - to get middling results. She helped our terribly shy puppy in group puppy training come out of her shell and gain the confidence she needed. We completed a 3-session training package for our two dogs and are very satisfied with the results. Tully's was very professional and communicated well with us from setting up the consultation to scheduling our training sessions. Iris was great as a trainer. Each session was high-quality and packed with new drills and information. She gave us plenty of tips and recommendations and always had new things to teach us. She also sought to help tailor the training specific for the areas we wanted to improve with our pets. If you are considering Tully's, there are two things you should note: 1) The training is not cheap. But if you're ready to invest the time and money in your pets, you will likely come away satisfied. 2) You are not paying for a trainer to come in and do all the training for you and miraculously make your pet perfect. You are paying for a trainer to come in and show/recommend the best way to work with your pet to see improvement in problematic areas. Like many things, you get out of it what you put in. Worth every penny!!! One of the best investments we could have made for our family after we rescued a dog from an LA shelter. We already had one dog who we trained, so assumed we could train our new addition, but his behavioral issues had us seeking a professional. And boy are we glad we did. We have walked away from this experience being better dog parents to both our babes. We had Meghan, who I could not praise enough. She cares... like really cares and we are forever grateful. Meghan took our anxiety ridden, abandonment issue, a little aggressive Husky with mouthy tendencies and transformed him. She gave us the tools to understand and train him. He's a different dog and we cannot thank her and Tully's enough! There was even an emergency early on where our boy was triggered and she came over at 9 o'clock at night to calm us both down. Brianna is amazing! She helped me train my pup Sophie when I first adopted her almost 2 years ago. Since that initial training, Sophie has been one of the most well-behaved dogs in my community! I would like to say this is not for the training services, just regarding a consultation and our attempts to start training sessions. They were extremely prompt in returning my emails when we were setting up the initial consultation. Claire came to our home and met with us and our Corgi Glitter in June. We really liked her and had every intention of booking. The cost of 6 training sessions is over $1,000 which did seem worth it but we had to budget for that plus clear our schedules so my husband and I could both meet once a week with Claire and the dog for two months, plus practice training at home for thirty minutes a day. I had a busy summer and I knew I wouldn't be able to commit to that until August. Despite her saying she would love to get us signed up for training that same day, I told her that we would email her when we were ready to move forward. It is now August, we have money saved for training and our schedules mostly cleared. I emailed her two weeks ago to see about putting down a deposit on training and starting in September, and I still haven't gotten a response. We had every intention of booking, but were not able to drop $1226 (the total cost of six sessions) I am super disappointed because Claire seemed so nice and our little Corgi really liked her, but we will definitely be doing elsewhere for training. read more

Shortly after I rescued a completely untrained dog, I consulted with a few dog trainers and ultimately decided on using Tully's Training. Sara was organized and clearly communicated the training concepts, and I appreciated the recap email after each session, which usually referenced a few YouTube videos (not their own videos though). The training did help with housebreaking and some basic obedience commands. However, when the rescue "honeymoon period" was over and my dog suddenly started showing aggressive behaviors, they suggested I either rehome my dog, or find a rescue group experienced with this particular breed to see what training methods they suggest. So essentially I paid over $1,000 to have a dog that sits on command and takes a shit outside, but also tries to attack strangers and other dogs, and there was little they could do to help. And they also couldn't tell me up front that they didn't have experience with this breed that they later admitted requires special handling. I gave them $1,000 just for them to tell me to seek the advice of others or rehome my dog. Perhaps this review wouldn't be so bad had I not found a balanced trainer who was able to successfully work with my dog, because now I know my dog wasn't a lost cause or the wrong fit for my home--it was Tully's that was the wrong fit for my dog. I wouldn't recommend using Tully's for a dog that has any aggression or serious behavioral issues. They are doing a huge disservice to owners, dogs, and the rescue world by suggesting rehoming just because they aren't capable of handling a certain dog, in which case they should have never agreed to accept payment and attempt to train a dog that they knew was beyond their abilities. read more

I have mixed feelings about my experience with Tully's. But ultimately I think I that it was a waste of my money. The consultation process was good; I spoke with someone via Zoom and then set up my first in-person session with Katie very quickly. Katie was very sweet and loved my puppy. She showed up on time (most of the time; but was very communicative when she would be late) and listened to my concerns and goals. I had already been working with him for several months and he had a good grasp on the training basics: sit, down, paw, stand, watch me, spin, off, leave it. I mostly needed help with more advanced/behavioral issues, like counter surfing, stealing things, drop it (EVERYTHING is a game to him), loose-leash walking, stay with duration, recall, polite greetings, and, most importantly, listening when I don't have a treat in my hands. One thing Katie said was to always have treats. I guess that's fine in theory, but what if we go out and I forget to bring treats? I'm not perfect. Or what if I'm wearing something that doesn't have pockets? It's just not realistic. He should listen to me whether I have treats or not. We had most of our training sessions at my house, and did one session at a park, though I don't think I would call it a full session. It was mostly play time. After each session I received an email detailing what we covered and homework for the coming week. These were mostly helpful, but often I felt like there was almost *too* much information given to me all at once. Someone will probably roll their eyes at that comment. No really; hear me out. When you're a new puppy parent, almost anything can feel overwhelming. I feel like we should have covered only one or two things per session and really focused on making those stick. But the amount of information that was thrown at me was incredibly overwhelming and I couldn't remember a lot of what Katie told me during the sessions. Which is a shame because I remember being absolutely blown away by a lot of the things she said, but even to this day I can't remember the vast majority of them. Overall I'd say I was disappointed with my experience. I don't particularly feel like Katie taught me anything I couldn't have learned by myself on YouTube, and she never helped me with treat phase-out or non-treat rewarding. Even with continued practice months after completing the course, I haven't seen enough of a difference in his behavioral issues to be worth the over $1,400 I paid. read more

In addition to showing us mechanics around how to train our pup, Lisa explained why our pup was behaving the way he was and how reinforce good behavior and redirect his bad behavior. Each session is followed up by an email with everything you did that day, all of the sessions notes, homework and references for you to continue your training and understanding. They don't train your dog, they train you to read, understand and train your own dog. Training goes at your own pace and your trainer is available anytime to answer questions and give help in the moment if you need it. They really care and don't make you wait until your next session to get you the answers you need. We have a very smart and very sensitive dog and we want to give her every opportunity to be the absolute best and most confident dog that she can be. We came to Tully's and they delivered. We finished our first course and we will be using Tully's for all of our training needs in the future. For reference, our dog is a Miniature American Shepherd, a Boarder Collie Australian Shepherd mix. We started Tully's Training at about 9 months. We earned our basic training certificate. We will be signing up for our Good Citizens course after the holiday season. Our time with Lisa was a total game-changer for our rescue dog Miles! Tully's Training is one of the best investments I've gotten for my dog. Though we only had a few sessions with our trainer (and we wish we could afford more), My dog has shown significant progress during the program. My dog, a rescue Pitbull/Lab mix, knew only one command (sit) and didn't even follow the command consistently. Since then, she knows a lot more commands, has way better impulse control, responsiveness, and manners towards our guests (she no longer jumps on them). There are many good dog trainers. What I found exceptional about Tully's Training is their insightful guidance and training of me, along with my energetic young companion Zuma. My wife and I have used all levels Tully's programs from large groups, to private, in-home training and have found Mary and the Tully's staff always able to zero in on the way we have to behave to help our dog understand what is OK and what is not. - Submitted a request for consultation - 2 WEEKS LATER received an email from Meghan to schedule a Zoom consultation - Met Meghan on Zoom for approximately 15 minutes with introductions and touched on her training style (positive reinforcement), our goals of improving our dog's reactive barking and general obedience habits through private training. Due to COVID 19, Meghan was currently only offering zoom training sessions (completely understandable). Since we were interested in In-person private sessions, she referred us to her colleague, Harmony. Few minutes later, she emailed us her contact and price options: 3 month Zoom program (8 sessions)= $1120.00 3 month In-person program (8 sessions)= $1980.00 - Contacted Harmony via email, phone (mailbox full and unable to leave message, and text. - No response for 2 days and contacted Meghan for follow up - Meghan advised that she would follow up with Harmony - Finally spoke with Harmony regarding our goals. Since the 3 month/$1980.00 was a significant commitment, I inquired whether we can start with an initial session to establish a true physical assessment, more accurate frequency/duration, a customized plan, and ensure we would be a good fit. She understood my concerns but stated that she needed to follow company procedures/emailed pricing. I, personally, need to feel confident with the trainer and their expertise before committing my family, 3 months, and $$$$. A 15 min Zoom consult isn't an adequate platform for such rapport/service agreement. Based on the lack of timely responses and this experience, I will shop for better customer service. read more

Thanks to the generosity of the Tully's Training proprietors, Mary & Alex, Ken-Mar Rescue received a gift of training for some of our orphans. The training consists of 5 group training classes held over 5 consecutive Sundays. The groups are small and specific. The handlers and the canines get so much individual attention that I don't know who learned more at the first session, the human students or the canine students! The setting is perfect, a lovely park with ample parking and centrally located to any L.A. freeway. The homework is straight forward, easy to implement and the orphans love all of the positive reinforcement they receive. Mary is an expert in her field across various species: dolphin, exotic animals and canines. We are blessed to have received this gift b/c it is teaching our volunteers techniques that are repeatable to apply when training future orphans. It is literally a breath of fresh air to experience first-hand this positive, reward-based learning experience. Try it for yourself, you'll be glad you did and so will your K9 companions. read more

My partner and I turned to Tully's Training for help with our 5 year old Terrier mix and our experience has been fantastic! We had a super-positive experience from start to finish. I feel like my dog and I have made friends for life! I was nervous before starting training because I was afraid I'd find out my dog was a nightmare, or I'd get criticized for doing the wrong things. I was SO relieved when I started training with Mary. I found Tully's Training on Yelp. and I'm extremely grateful I did! Beau, my problem pup, was a pee-er. A rescue from the mean streets of LA, he just couldn't get out of survival mode even though he had been with me nearly a year. So enter Mary! Just four sessions in, Beau is peeing 98% less (I've accepted that as a Beta dog who gets excited, he's never going to be 100%). Not only that but he knows all the basics, too. Sit,Stay,Come, Leave it. What I really like about Tully's training is that you never try to be "pack leader" with your dog. That approach didn't work for me before--and it has very little basis in dog psychology and behavior anyway. Instead, you work with your dog, set boundaries, and understand their body language to work through their issues, and build trust. I've done both the private sessions, and the 5-week group training, and I am so happy with the results. I have a dog that is more comfortable and secure in his surroundings, and now knows the house rules, which provides structure for both of us. Turns out, I have a pretty smart dog, and part of our graduation from Tully's Training will be to teach him some fun party tricks. Used Claire from Tully's training to train our 1 year old puppy Winston who had not been listening to us and occasionally using the bathroom inside the house. We had a total of 5 skype sessions with Claire and we couldn't be more pleased. It was very convenient to be able to do the training at home and not have to deal with LA traffic.
