To describe Roti Jouper merely as a Caribbean Takeaway is so missing something that distinguishes this and The Shepherd's Bush take-out from all the other Carib Takeaways. What makes this place so special? It is an authentic Trinidadian Takeaway, the creations from this beautiful island are distinctly different from the rest of the Caribbean. That this place is always busy speaks volumes, having previously visited Trinidad & Tobago I can vouch that the delicious wide ranging menu is 100% authentic. The cheerful staff who work here from these islands serve you with a smile and help to create a 'buzz.' On the menu there is far more to explore than just the overhead displays, check out the mouth watering Mac Cheese cakes and bread. Also so much from the menu you can freeze, so well worth the effort to stock up if you have some distance to travel. Roti Jouper was actually discovered quite by accident, and one very positive outcome after my dear friend from Trinidad had been robbed of a purse ( eventually returned intact minus all the cash bar £1 ) seeking solace at a café outside Archway Tube Station, we struck up conversation after picking up a Trini accent, 'if you want authentic Trini food, do get yourselves down to Roti Jouper in Clapham and mention that Raij Paul Barrackpoor sent you' Within five minutes we were on our way, just round the corner from Clapham North on the Northern Line, or Clapham High St on the Overground, and wow we were soon transported back to Trinidad. Ordered a massive takeout, which my dear friend took back to her flat in Portslade Brighton. On 16th October I popped back for another order so heavy that the canvas bag came apart at the seams, this will soon be on its way with me back to Brighton, and thanks for the very generous 'extras.' read more

I am admittingly a Trini food novice so I'm rating this place based on my tastebuds. The food is delicious. I got the doubles and whilst I was surprised the filling had the texture of refried beans (rather than the whole chickpeas I had at a roti place in Stokie), it was delicious and a bit spicy. I could have devoured two of them! I also got the shrimp roti with all four of the veg fillings option. However, opening it at home, it was heavy on the chickpeas and spinach but I didn't detect pumpkin. Oh well! It still tasted fantastic (and is not as spicy as the doubles). For a total of £6.50 I had two dinners. Score. I am deducting a star bc it's cash only. C'mon guys, it's 2017, get with the program! read more

Amazing authentic Trinidadian food! Possible the best in London. It is always jam packed in here and I can understand why! Cor blimey... the food is good! YOU NEED to try their polouri (which is soft little balls of seasoned dough soaked in garlic sauce) and their Macaroni pie, which is cheesy macaroni pasta, with a top layer of coleslaw and crispy cheese). Not forgetting their traditional spicy Roti, i recommend the pumpkin one! This place is amazing, in fact, they need to win and award! I'm serious about my food and just thinking about going to this place makes my mouth water (I'm soooo.... starting to dribble as I type this review). Anyway, prices are great, venue is clean and staff are really friendly. There is not enough space to sit down and eat but i'd rather take the goods home and enjoy every mouthful at my own leisure! Located near the tube station is Roti Joupa, this tiny take away with just a few seats decked inside sells Caribbean food. I use to eat Mac & Cheese but have reduce eating it as much as it can be quite an overload. Ms. Chocoholic raved positively about their Mac Pie. I wasn't convinced when I noticed that a square of the Mac Pie was scooped out of a tray ( which appears to have been sitting there for hours) and placed into a microwave to reheat. Reheated Mac & Cheese? With the reheated Mac Pie in our hands, I noticed slivers of cucumber and and lime sauce ladened in the takeaway box. I took a bite and it was a surprise to the tastebuds. I was expecting stodgy tasting gloopy elasticised cheese on hardened macaroni. Instead, though slightly stodgy, the cucumber and lime juice cut through the heaviness and I was eating a refreshing dish. I wouldn't have thought that refreshing would be a word that I would associate with mac n cheese. On this occasion, it does and I love it. I am happy to come back anytime for this. The Doubles (roti bread + Dahl mix) is also another favourite of Ms. Chocoholic. On this occasion, it wasn't as good as usual and was on the soggy side. read more

I love roti and as my boyfriend and I headed out of London we decided to stop in Clapham and enjoy one. I will readily admit, I like spicy, but not mouth burning hot. At Roti Joupa you have to be careful. We ordered a medium roti and a hot roti; they got the orders mixed up. I was eating my roti and my face started to get red, my nose began to run, and my tongue started to go numb. At first I thought wow, I am a punk I can't even handle a medium roti. Of course my boyfriend thought I was a total wimp until he tasted my roti and realized I had the hot and he'd been eating the medium. At that point I decided to stop eating my mouth burning roti, despite how good it was and enjoy my fruit juice! So my advice is to order a mild or medium roti separately from anyone ordering something hotter. The roti is very good and I would have enjoyed it more if I had eaten a medium or mild one. read more

This was a pleasant experience through and through. The folks were really nice and the food was a pleasant revelation! I had a goat curry wrap, which ended up being A LOT of food for cheap. Doesn't seem like many people choose to dine I'm at this establishment, so the owner seemed to relish the opportunity to talk to me, especially given that I was a foreigner. LOVE Roti Joupa! I was so happy to have found authentic Trinidadian food nearby in London. Everything is good here. The pumpkin and buss up shot is absolutely delicious- it tastes the same as it would in Trinidad. They have pholourie (so-so)and aloo pie which always runs out before I get there so it's a rare treat. Even though it's a really small takeaway that gets crowded at times. The staff are really friendly, polite and most importantly fast! Cannot complain about price as it's cheap in comparison for the food in the area and the portion size is great. I can rarely finish all of it. There's limited seating here and I wish they would invest in a better seating area so I wouldn't have to trek home before digging in. read more

Bought kumar, poulorie, doubles, veggie roti and chicken roti. Was REALLY excited at the prospect of some good food, because it's been MONTHS since I had any authentic Trini food. Got to the location and it was packed, so I felt encouraged - if there are a lot of people food must be good right? Not really. What worked: The staff is great. The woman who took our orders was professional and thorough. We ordered several items and our order was totally correct. Service was quick. What didn't work: Food was lukewarm to cold. Some of it smelled like fish oil. The filling for the doubles was bland with a hint of shadow benny or cilantro. The sauce for the poulorie had an unpleasant bitter aftertaste. The biggest let down was the roti. The dhal puri skin had no dhal in it, so in essence it was a tortilla. I've never had a dhal puri roti without peas in the skin. The fillings for the roti were okay. Would hardly say this place is authentic. read more

Love this place. Essentially a takeaway, but you can eat on a stool by the window if you don't live nearby. The service isn't the fastest, but they're friendly enough when they acknowledge you're there. But it's the food! Oh, the food! The goat curry roti is what I always opt for and it's delicious and tender. Watch out for the odd bone though (a mark of authenticity?). The first time I went, I got a really fresh-made roti, and it was pretty special. They make the bread in front of you. Sadly, the last two times, my roti hasn't been quite as fresh. They still make the bread in front of you, but they're stockpiling. The most recent one was a touch dry round the edges. But still, it's only 5.50. You can't complain. And once every now and then you'll strike lucky. Hope I do next time! read more

There is absolutely NO WHERE ELSE you can find the authentic taste of Trinidad cooking. Roti Joupa has it all, from food to snacks to drinks. The atmosphere is just as Trini with the continuous sound of Caribbean music. Staff are friendly, courteous and helpful. There is a wide variety of dishes to please even the fussiest palate. While Roti Joupa doesn't visually stand out on the street, the food absolutely does. I ordered hot doubles for £1.50 which was a spicy ball of beautiful veggies and dough. I then ordered a duck roti - wow. It was so huge that I could only eat half for lunch and ended up having the rest for dinner. Super cheap, extremely tasty, enormous portions and friendly staff. Visited here while staying in London. I've had a lot of Jamaican food over the years, and felt that it was time to give Trinidad a try! The location was very close to the tube and easy to find. The place appeared to be clean and the staff was very friendly to me. My curry chicken was very tender and flavorful (wish there had be more of it). And it blended perfectly with the rice. Very solid dish, I just wish there had been more chicken. read more

I've been living in Clapham for quite a while now and I'd heard really good things about this Trinidadian eatery but hadn't quite managed to get there. This place is always busy, and when you walk in you can see lots of cooks in the background preparing roti from scratch. This gives it a very authentic feel. I ordered chicken curry (a favourite dish of mine). There was a delicious simplicity about this food. No sauce, but very flavoursome. Lovely rice and peas. They also use chicken thighs which are much more juicy. Portion sizes are excellent too, no scrimping here. You can also choose how hot you want your curry, I opted for medium - it was perfect for my palate. Any hotter and I wouldn't have been able to walk the next day. Never tried this sort of cooking before, but my brother was paying so I didn't like to refuse the offer. Not sure what it was called, probably a Roti, all I know is that it was large and looked like a packet of folded pastry. It was supposed to be the mild one, but if it was, I wouldn't dare try a hot one. Maybe I'll try again when my taste buds recover. read more

Visiting from CA and lived in Trinidad. I always get roti when I am in London. This little place was excellent. I had a shrimp roti and a double and a passion fruit soda. Absolutely delicious and was just like being back in Trinidad. The service was wonderful and fast. Prices are low. Portions enormous. Best roti ever. Don't miss this little place. I had been meaning to try one of the two Caribbean take away spots located right next door to each other every time I walk out of Clapham North tube station. Checked reviews online and saw that Roti Joupa was the one to go to.. - The mac & cheese is something else. Unlike anything I have ever eaten. Super tasty all around. Lime bits add great contrast and it has a mild spice kick that ties it all together. And for £1.50 its a no brainer! - The curry chicken roti was much bigger than I imagined, but it certainly fits its price at £5.50. Will emphasise more spice next time, but in no way was I disappointed. Great texture to the Roti and the meat was very tender and flavourful. Went down a treat. Looking forward to going back and trying the Goat Curry Roti, which I just didn't have the courage to order on my rookie debut at this authentic Indian Trini spot. Definitely worth going back to and I can see myself becoming a regular in the very near future. Was feeling the music as well! read more

Now I've not been to Trinidad, so I can't tell you if it's authentic or not - though I am reliably informed it is. However, what I can tell you is that it that the roti are delicious parcels of flavour - the curry goat is tender and chunky, the mixed vegetables are sweet, savoury, and spicy - as spicy as you like, they will always ask you how you prefer it. Staff are friendly, and it's a pleasure watching the chefs cheerfully cooking away with the Trinidadian radio in the background. The price also means that the value-for-money is excellent. For a quick bite, there is no better place in London. read more

My first experience with Trinidadian food was from the Roti Joupa, and I haven't looked back. Their curried goat with pepper sauce and a buss up shot is just awesome, (often backed up by a slice of pie), and I have to get a fix at least once a week. At £5, it should be a sin. Freindly staff, clean, open kitchen, good ingredients, great tastes...I don't know what I'll do when the time comes to leave Clapham. Until then, the Roti Joupa is pretty much the only reason I still live here. read more

A small but authentically Trinidadian take away opposite Clapham North tube station. Having a Trini wife and spending a lot of time over there eating both home cooked and street vendor's food, it is nice to be able get that in London. Nearly every Caribbean place in London is Jamaican with only a nod to Trinidad on the menu, usually in the form of a mutton roti. Well Roti Joupa I'm pleased to say is Trini to de bone and gets the food pretty well spot on. I've had curry goat and curry duck and they are really nice, the duck doesn't match my mother in laws but its good and I'm not sure what could (actully come to think of it I didn't see mother-in-law on the menu). The doubles are nice but, and this will sound weird, too clean. The barra is warm soft and virtually grease free and the channa is fresh. The problem for me is that doubles are supposed to be greasy, the channa is supposed to be a deep dark colour and the grease should turn the wrapper see through. The doubles I had at Roti Joupa the other day were just a bit too clinical, almost a sanitised version of what should be decadent greasy street food. read more
