**Update!! My tooth bonding fell off one hour later!!**…read more
I had a 12 hour layover in Manila from 5 am to 5 pm. I've had routine dental checkups and cleaning done in Manila before, so with nothing else to do on my layover I thought I would use the opportunity to get some dental work done. Based on my past experience, the quality of dental work in the Philippines is just as good as in the US, and much more affordable.
The primary reason for this visit was to get bonding done on one of my two front teeth, which had been ground down over time leaving it shorter than the other front tooth. I also expressed interest in laser teeth whitening, but only if both procedures could be done in a timely manner since I was on a bit of a time crunch. I scheduled the earliest appointment available (9:00 am) to allow plenty of time to get everything done before I had to go to the airport that afternoon.
When I arrived, the dentist asked whether or not I wanted the laser whitening. I responded that it depends on how long it would take, because I had time constraints that day. She said that the laser whitening would take 45 minutes, and the bonding would take 30 minutes. That's a total of only one hour and fifteen minutes, which was no problem for my schedule, so I agreed to do both procedures.
5 hours later, the dentist was frantically attempting to polish the jagged edges of newly bonded tooth. I was telling the dentist that it was already 45 minutes past when I needed to leave for the airport, and more than 3 hours past the time she said we would be done. I had to decide in the moment whether it would cost me more to rebook my flight or have an American dentist fix the tooth when I got home - neither option was good. Ultimately the whole thing was a waste of time and money since I will have to pay another dentist to fix the botched job.
I'm actually happy with the way the tooth looks, but it feels absolutely horrible. The top of my front tooth has a sharp edge on it, and I feel like the whole bonding material could easily just peel off like a paint chip when I brush my teeth. The bottom of the tooth is rough against my tongue and feels very unnatural. There is also a sharp edge on the side of the bonded tooth where it meets my other front tooth. The entire tooth feels bulky and artificial, much thicker than the adjacent front tooth.
I suspect a lot of other people might have a much better experience with the same dentist. However, if she had just honestly answered my question about the duration of the procedures, I would have skipped the laser whitening and had plenty of time to properly finish the job that I had actually gone there for. I don't know if she genuinely believed it could be done in under 2 hours, or if she knew that I would be spending much less money if I passed on the laser whitening due to time constraints, and just lied to get me to spend more.
In the end, I could feel that the bonding was not at all finished, but I was out of time. The dentist insisted that it feels good now! As the one who actually has the tooth in their mouth, I can assure you that it actually feels very bad. I was really surprised that she had the nerve to tell me how my tooth feels.
Lastly, in my intial emails in which I made my appointment, they told me what the normal price was for these procedures, but that I would receive a discount from the normal price if I got both procedures done. I otherwise would not have asked for or expected a discount, but after they screwed up my tooth it actually seemed appropriate. They still charged me the full price.
