I love the range of yarns in this store, with the focus on natural or blended fibres with few (if any?) pure acrylics and a good number of locally spun or dyed yarns. They also regularly have good sales on high-quality yarn available. Their COVID measures have been great, with only a small number of people allowed in at a time, hand sanitizer available and masks on, and on top of it they have maintained great customer service for both face to face and phone orders.

Dedicated to supplying artists, advertising agencies, local art schools and DIY crafters since 1950 and with branches across Canada you can find fairly much everything you might need to get creative in this creativity complex. In my experience, it's great to chat with the staff here about what you're working on or looking for. The organization is a bit complex because they have so much stuff, so it's helpful to have one of the wise young art students leading you around, plus: adorable. The vibe in here is clean, bright and modern, not at all the inspiring sense of dripping with history and the labours of love as you find in true old school places like Pearl Paint in NYC, but it gets the job done in style. Some items suffer from the usual Montreal markup, but they make up for it by having in-house brands for things like sketchbooks that are really cheap.

I still find everything too pricey, though there are sometimes good deals. But the arts and crafts material here is just too bloody expensive for no reason. I was also surprised to find, that not only do they not carry any parts to make dolls (like little ceramic or plastic heads and arms etc..); They were also entirely unhelpful in their response and borderline hostile/ at least visibly annoyed that I would dare ask where one might be able to find those types of items. A simple "no, sorry" would have sufficed. (Better customer service would have at least entertained me and asked whatever for I may need such funny specific items, and my response ("We're going to make our very own Christmas Tree Angel") should have elicited great glee and pleasantries amongst us, but alas t' was in my fantasy Michaels, not here.) Lady still managed to convince me to sign up via email/phone number which is supposedly going to give me access to better deals, which may make me bump this to 4 stars, but so far I'm sittin' pretty at 3. The shop carries nicer, higher-end yarns. There are a lot of knitted samples to pique your creative interest. I didn't try their tea and pastries, but they have a nice, small selection. I bought a few items that were specific to La Maison Tricotée. The staff was so nice, welcoming, and helpful. I would recommend La Maison Tricotée to knitters, crocheters and yarn lovers. Even if you are not, but need to buy a gift for one, the helpful employees would give you guidance.

This newest of the yarn shops has a lot of gorgeous high-end wool to be drooled over. At about $25 for a ball of hand-painted sock yarn, these will have to be occasional rather than everyday treasures. (Note, though, that the prices here are in line with other similar shops in Montreal and online). I also bought some HiyaHiya bamboo needles which are nice and smooth -- faster than my regular bamboo dpns but less slippery than metal needles. Each pack of needles came with a bonus treat: a brass stitch marker in one, a sock pattern in another. Not sure if this is a feature of the manufacturer or of this shop. (If you don't know what dpns are, feel free to ignore this paragraph). What makes Tricotée different from other wool stores is that you can still support their business by having a tea and a treat even if you want to bring along your own project, say, with wool you've got hanging around at home. A crochet class was just getting underway as I was heading out. Classes seem to be at the back of the store, leaving plenty of space for other customers in front.
