Christmas Eve was a busy and festive night at Twelve 28. An acoustic guitarist played Christmas music for a full dining room. My wife loved her crispy braised pork belly, and I enjoyed the best New York steak ever, with baked potato croquettes and sauce bordelaise. This place has a terrific and affordable wine list with selections from Nevada County and the wine country of Sonoma / Napa. Cline Cellars was a favorite winery when we lived in Sonoma, and here the Cline Mourvedre was terrific paired with the pork and beef. Chef Zach makes everything from scratch -- pan roasted brussel sprouts were wonderful, the croquettes light and savory, the sauces perfect -- and his effusive father, MIchael, was host extraordinaire in a Christmas blazer that lit up the room. Wow! Do not miss a chance to eat here. We drove an hour to eat at Twelve 28 and it did not disappoint. The space is so warm and inviting, like a familiar spot that you love. You couldn't ask for a better family to own, cook, & serve you. Plus, there aren't many places that make you feel like you could have a date night there AND also feel comfortable bringing your kid- this is that place! And of course there is the food. Oh my. We went for brunch and I had the root vegetable hash (and the lavender mimosa!) and my husband had the country Benedict. Ah-mazing. I will have to go back for the s'mores French toast- I mean really? This is a great place to go for a special dinner night or just for a great meal. When I go to a restaurant that is highly recommended, I often ask for the entree the chef would recommend that night. Most times I get one of the most expensive entrees however when I got my dish it was loosely labeled macaroni and cheese. It was terrific and one of the less expensive entrees. I consumed the whole thing (not including the plate). We are going again on my wife's birthday and are looking forward to it. read more

This restaurant is a little out of the way from town, but well worth the journey! If you are looking for a nice date night in Penn Valley, I highly recommend this place. The ingredients are locally-sourced and you can taste the quality in every bite. As a result, the menu changes depending upon the season and what is available, creating more opportunities to try different recipes from the menu! This is probably the best restaurant in Nevada County. I only say probably because I haven't been everywhere, but let's be serious, it's the best. The Korean wings were amazing, flavorful, meaty, and a good amount of spice without being overwhelming, and the smashed fries are a great take on everybodies favorite fried tuber. Don't skip the bread assortment, it did a great job of mellowing out the heat from the wings before the main dish. I had the chicken, my girlfriend had the Japanese pork tenderloin, we had to agree to disagree on who's was better. The beer selection was awesome, they had 2 Moonrakers on tap (among others) , and a big wine selection. Sadly they were out of the crepe cake, but the apple Betty and lemon Panna cotta were tasty substitutes. Can't wait to get back! read more

I must preface this review by saying that I ate here twice before and each time the service and food were outstanding. However, my most recent trip this past week left a lot to be desired. First, my girlfriend is gluten intolerant and noticed that only one appetizer on the menu was gluten-free. So I spoke to the owner, who reassured me that "any dish can be made gluten-free." But when we ordered, it turned out that many dishes had gluten and could not be changed. Finally we ordered the sea bass. But the waitress came back about 10 minutes later and told us "the sea bass has bread crumbs in the sauce" and couldn't be de-glutenized, so we ended up with the beet salad. We ordered the chilled beet soup, which was fairly tasteless and a waste of money. While the beet salad and risotto were tasty, we felt we had been pushed into a less than ideal meal. There was another annoying event -- we asked for tastes of the two most promising white wines. One of them was absolutely fantastic and we immediately ordered a glass of it. But what arrived in our glass was definitely an inferior product. The waitress insisted it was the same, but we knew better, so we changed our order to 2 glasses of red Zinfandel. I did not look at the price list carefully - I thought the menu said $8/glass. It turned out to be $18/glass, so we ended up paying $36 for two just OK glasses of red wine. All in all, Twelve28 left much be desired. read more

I love that they opened in Penn Valley! I love that it's a family owned and operated business. The front of the house staff are efficient, knowledgeable and very polite. They have a stellar beer section and some unique wines. I've been here three times, and each time I've came the dishes have all been overly salted, as well as overly priced. I've lived in San Francisco for years and gone to many restaurants with this same price point here, and I think these guys really need to lower their prices. I'd love to see these guys change things by changing their appetizer menu ( similar or same ones since they've opened) up a bit, decrease the salt, and humble their high prices down a bit, because foodies can tell that the caliber of this restaurant is not yet worth the prices. But I have hope that they will be soon! I'm so happy we have a place in Penn valley. read more

I really loved my dinner at this restaurant. We had vegetarian dishes that were all seasoned well and had many components making for interesting flavors. Food was filling but not heavy. Best part was the flourless chocolate cake which was divine. Service was very nicely done and they made custom menus for our party because we were celebrating an anniversary. Price was steep for this area and I think could be a bit more fair- ie reduce price for dishes if the meat is left out- but overall it was worth it. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a special occasion. read more

This is our go to place in Penn Valley. Mike, Lorie, Zack and the rest of the staff always treat us like family. The dishes are consistently unique and flavorful. The menu changes to fit with what is fresh and in season. Get there quick while they are still serving the stone fruit and strawberry salads. The fresh fish tacos are always a treat. read more

Soup was very good. The salad was very salty and there was very little of it. The potatoes with pork bellies was not as expected. Nothing on the menu was terribly appealing, not much for choices other than meat, nothing very healthy. We wished there were some or one egg dish We were there for lunch. It was empty and the service was bad. I had to keep getting up to find the waitress. She needs to learn to observe to see if customer needs something without interrupting or just to notice customer was looking for her. The meal was wildly overpriced. This restaurant is in Penn Valley. Ahem. If I hadn't read about it, I probably never would have tried it. I didn't really even know where Penn Valley was. There's a Taco Bell there, right? After reading the rave reviews, of course I took the bait. Hook, line, sinker. Twelve 28 is amazing! We've now been several times and it doesn't matter what we've ordered, it's all been great. Beet salad, risotto, whatever. Big portions, we always take some home. Our dogs have very refined taste buds. The service is excellent and fast. The chef (owner, I believe) is super friendly, comes to the table. We ate there on my birthday with a bunch of friends once, they had my name on the menu, the staff had signed a birthday card for me (make reservations for the VIP treatment). What's up with that? I felt famous. Everyone should feel famous on their birthday. If you haven't eaten here, do so soon. You'll be happy and so will your dogs. read more

F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S! We live in Quincy, CA and made the drive to Penn Valley, CA to try Twelve 28 Kitchen, it was well worth the trip! Love the atmosphere, they have a "less is more" industrial-ish vibe with comfortable seating & lots of natural light. The menu is versatile, and contrary to other reviews I've read, very adequately priced. From our arrival and through out our lunch, every staff member was delightfully friendly and gracious. We were definitely made to feel that it was not our privilege to be there, rather it was their privilege to have us as their guests. The food was outstanding, perfectly sized portions (enough to take some home :) ) well seasoned, and presented beautifully. In addition to the awesome food menu, they have a number of great beers on tap as well as a nice wine list. All of their bread is baked fresh in house and every menu item along with all accompaniments are prepared on site by Chef Zach and his team. I can not recommend Twelve 28 enough, and will surely be returning in the very near future and beyond!!! read more

Absolutely fantastic food. We have never been disappointed. The chef is creative and every thing we have tasted is absolutely delightful. We have tried new things and standards, such as chicken, and just can't tell you how impressed we are. My husband is a chef and his cooking is exquisite oh, so he Delights when a chef takes all the time and has such great dishes. Many lovely Wineries close by, including gray Pine. Excellent food. I had the lamb it was cooked perfectly. Fabulous service, the girl looking after us was really attentive and friendly. Would have liked some better alternatives other than water or lemonade for a non-alcoholic drink. So many restaurants are all about the wine and dont care to provide something more imaginative for those of us who dont want to drink and drive. On the very pricey side for lunch, especially for lunch. Also not keen on the owner standing having loud conversations with locals and his friends right next to the table when you are trying to eat but will definitely try it again as the standard of food is out standing for this area.. read more

I want to say that the we have had many wonderful meals here. The changing menu is a nice seasonal complement. The quality is great and flavors unique. This is a "new" go to place for us. Mike as the host is friendly and the staff, for a new place, is getting better and better. The price is OK with me however it is more than our usual go to by $10 or so. To not have to drive to Grass Valley, find parking! We are enjoying Twelve 28's quality food and friendly staff. read more
