We got a "hankering" to visit this place today, and we're glad we did. We arrived about 11:30am, early because we wanted to beat the lunch rush. It wasn't necessary, the place was not yet filling up. We got a lovely and shady table outside, and were promptly provided with menus and water. Took a few moments to decide what we wanted, and our server was prompt and helpful in taking our requests. The main reason we went to this place was to get the chicken tenders from the starters menu for my husband. Sadly, they were out of chicken tenders! He regrouped and requested one of the burgers with added bacon, and successfully asked for the soup of the day (chorizo corn chowder) as his side dish. They don't usually do that, but made an exception in his case. I also went for the starters menu and chose the shrimp brochettes (wrapped in bacon) and a side of potato salad. To drink, he got a nitro Scottish ale, and I got a glass of the house chardonnay. Everything was very tasty. This was a surprisingly great spot to stop and grab a post ride meal and drink. I think I've stoped here for 3 iterations and owners of this spot and hands down this is the best. The tri tip was sandwich was simple and flavorful, highlighting the smoked meats instead of drowning it in sauce. The meat was tasty, very tender and filling and the portions were hearty. Our waitress was very kind, attentive, and helpful. I chose onion rings in the side and they were crispy, fresh and very tasty. The beer menu was diverse and cheap for what they were offering. We went in after biking the nearby trails. The food really hit the spot. I shared the shrimp tacos 5/5 with my friend and the fried avocado tacos 4/5. We also got a side of onion rings which was large in size for a side. There is a large beer selection on the menu to fit the tastes for a lot of different preferences. We sat outside since it was warm enough in December. The outdoor beer garden area is cute and there is a bocce court and grassy area with a stage. There was live music inside so that was a little too loud for us to sit inside and be able to talk in a larger group. Waitress was really friendly. Seemed like they were fairly busy so it was a little on the slower side, but more when it was time to get the check versus timeliness of drinks and putting in order. read more

We sat on the beautiful, dog friendly, patio with a delightful fountain. They have several beers on tap to choose from. We had the grilled chicken club which from all reports was great and the both the kalua pork and beef brisket tacos. We love 5 mile house. On cold days the inside is a cozy cabin to watch the snow by a big fire, and on summer evenings it is a wonderful place to eat outside while the kids play in the grass or play bocce. They have tons of live music and the food is great, my fav right now is the avocado tacos, but all the barbecue is great and my kids love the pizza. This place has potential, but our recent visit was disappointing. Our server was overwhelmed--she had six outdoor tables and ours inside, so it took a long time to order, and she never checked on us after the food came. We had to hunt her down just to pay. Meanwhile, the owner was behind the bar pouring drinks and not busy while his staff was clearly struggling. It would have made a huge difference if he had stepped in to help instead of watching it happen. The food was another letdown: my son's burger was undercooked, my tri-tip was extremely salty and a small portion for $28, and the croutons on my husband's salad were greasy. On top of that, there's no air conditioning, which made sitting inside uncomfortable. This was our second visit--the first time was much better, with great brisket tacos (though my husband wasn't impressed with his sandwich). Unfortunately, between the inconsistency, the price for what you get, and the uncomfortable environment, we probably won't be back. read more

We would really like to see this place succeed. We like the ambiance and friendly staff. The problem that we have with them is the inconsistent hours. They will close if they are not busy. We have visited there for dinner on two different Sunday evenings. We arrived at 6:30, (the posted hours are open until 8:00) but they were closed. They need to be consistent. I am actually so disappointed in the food and the service was soooo bad. The girl was quite literally keeping her back turned to me. We waited an hour for a Caesar salad, then there was basically no dressing. It was soooo dry. To add a cherry on top of this all there was a hair in my salad. Then I got the pulled pork sandwich and it was the driest I have ever ate. I literally took two bites and couldn't eat anymore... I asked for ketchup, extra dressing, and barbecue sauce because everything was so dry. I'm so mind blown. This is my last day in Nevada city and spend two hours here for a meal I didn't even eat. My waitress didn't even come around after I got my meal and a different waitress had to bring me my check and the host was kind enough to be more helpful than my waitress. Yesterday my husband and I went to 5 Mile House for lunch. It was amazing. I had the smoked chicken tacos and an apricot ale. The ale was perfectly balanced. Absolutely delicious! We need to start going here more often. The food is great, as are all the staff. And even just going for lunch, you feel like you're on a little bit of a vacation. Food- Pure Grease. Yuk I am so sorry to say, I had a pulled pork sandwich and french fries - my partner had a turkey sandwich, grilled and vegetables. None of it was edible because it was floating in grease. My hamburger bun looked wet but it was grease. The supposedly roasted vegetables were floating in grease. The french fries were limp and also floating in grease. I simply will never eat there again and I pointed it out to the server and she thanked me and said she would let the kitchen know. My question is how could the kitchen not have known when they served up two meals like that? read more

The food was delicious and the outdoor dining was fantastic! My husband and I ordered a BBQ combo tri-tip and Brisket plus a western burger. Both excellent but the onion rings were top notch and the tri-tip is worthy of a BBQ competition-- it was THAT GOOD! Also the jalapeño poppers were house made and delicious. I ordered the tri tip, waited 30 minutes, and was then told they were out. I asked for the chicken--also out. So I unfortunately went with the brisket. What arrived was... a $27 plate featuring one lonely, sad sliver of meat. I've now seen photos in other reviews showing triple the amount of brisket. I can only assume they were running low and rationing it out. Unfortunately, the brisket was dry and flavorless. The coleslaw tasted like a science experiment involving vinegar and sugar, and the cornbread was dry and hard. But I was starving. So I ate what I could and gently let the waitress know the brisket was dry. To her credit, she gave us half off the plate--which makes me think she knew I had been served the end-times portion. Still, if I hadn't said anything? I came home still hungry and heated up some premade meatballs from the back of the freezer. And to make things worse - my poor husband got a burger and onion rings and ended the evening bonding with the toilet bowl. My first visit to this one of a kind restaurant located above Nevada City. The historic, picturesque restaurant has an amazing, and very large rear patio. That is where the action is. Plants and landscaping are very well kept, with a nice relaxing environment which is perfect for warm summer nights and live music. At my visit, the restaurant had live music. The band and the crowd leaned "older boomer" . Everyone was well behaved and appeared to be enjoying themselves. I ordered the Sasquatch Burger for the egg on top. Both the burger and the fries were excellent. Service was adequate and friendly but not over the top in any respect. The beer selection is great and there are some excellent choices from around the region. This would be a great venue for a company getaway or one day retreat. The menu is on the limited side with burgers, bbq and pizza being your primary choices. I would return here in the future for sure. read more

Do not sit in the back room; they use white fluorescent lighting that feels like a dentist waiting room. It was 100% not the ambiance I was hoping for and the food was incredibly underwhelming.
