I also had a yellow warning light on. It turned out to be a tire-pressure sensor issue. A previous dealer had set the computer to 26 psi front and 26 psi rear, even though the door sticker called for 26 front and 32 rear. Chris recalibrated it correctly and walked me through everything he was doing. That kind of transparency builds trust. Two days later, John called about a Mercedes-Benz safety recall on the car: #2018060010, Smart Fortwo Model 451, 2008-2009, requiring replacement of the damping in the rear engine compartment. Because Smart cars have not been sold in the U.S. since 2017, he was told a free recall repair was unlikely. He quoted about $400. I said I would schedule soon do to the fact my wife was traveling. Several days later, John called again. He had spent hours over three days, unpaid, looking for a better answer. He found that Mercedes-Benz of Jacksonville, a former authorized Smart dealer that still works on these cars, could perform the recall at no cost. I cannot think of many shops that would ever invest that kind of time just to save a customer money. I told John I used to own many German cars over 15-years in Los Angeles before moving to Florida and that I never used dealerships because of the cost. He laughed and told me about a BMW customer who recently came in after a dealer quoted him $4,000 to replace an oil pan. Once the car was on the lift, they cleaned the pan and found a loose bolt that only needed a turn with a torque wrench. That customer avoided a $4,000 bill. John and Chris treated me with honesty, integrity, and respect. That is rare. If you own an import, skip the dealer markup and take it to Steinhardt Imports.
