Since The EARLY 70's, TWIN DRAGON served original Chinese cuisine. No chicken wings, no subs, etc. they had an old chalk board (black board with white chalk), actually two, with the FULL menu! Fast forward to today, YES I AGREE with the service being VERY different BUT my favorite, Pepper Steak, and 2nd favorite, egg foo yung, still has most of the flavoring that keeps me coming back when I'm in the area. What I will do (as Mr. W. mentioned in his review) the next time that I visit in person, is verbally inform the person with the unpleasant attitude at the front is share what this restaurant means to the community and the legacy that it carries. I grew up in that area in 1960s/70s. Whenever you wanted Chinese food, Twin Dragon was the place to go...or you go to Seven Seas on Georgia Ave, which wasn't as good. I knew family who operated Twin Dragon back then....the father, the children, the grans. They were such nice people. When I was kid, if I only had a dollar, i would go there just to get fried rice and gravy and a Coke....it was heavenly! The father would make it especially for me. Pepper steak was another one of my favorites...with real steak, green peppers, red peppers, yellow peppers, and onions. When was in the neighborhood a couple of weeks ago, I stopped in. I hadn't been there in over 5 decades!! I was surprised it was still there after all these years and it hadn't changed much, although it was under new management/owners. The tables they used to have were gone and replaced with just a few chairs. In the old days, you could eat in. And, for what it is worth, it was NOT as friendly as I remembered. The original owners were part of the community, and everyone knew them and they knew us. You could walk in, and they knew what you wanted right away. So, I decided to order the pepper steak and an egg roll....the no longer had rice and gravy! LOL! Well, to be honest, I was really disappointed. The pepper steak was not appetizing...more onions than anything, including steak. And,the egg roll was ginormous and full of cabbage...not what I remembered from back in the day. It was crunchy, but that is the only good thing I can say about it. Needless to say, I won't be going back. Times change, people change, places change. I lived in DC over 40 years ago. My family would get food from Twin Dragon at least once a week. I heard that the previous owners sold the restaurant, and the food was still delicious. I traveled to DC to visit my mother. She was craving Chinese food and suggested I go to Twin Dragon. It is strictly a carryout. I called in my order. When I arrived, I walked up to a large plexiglass counter top. I informed the person behind the counter that I was picking up my order. He went to the back and produced a bag and pushed it through the small opening in the plexiglass. My mother had the chicken chow mein. I didn't see her order and can't comment on it. I ordered 2 chicken egg rolls. I recall as a child getting egg rolls at Twin Dragon. They were divine. My family always craved the eggrolls, they were always delicious. Once I arrived home, I couldn't wait to rip open the bag to eat my eggrolls. What I immediately noticed, that the eggrolls had doubled in size. The eggrolls we purchased at Twin Dragon when I was a child were small. These eggrolls were huge. I took my first bite and had a mouth full of cabbage. The next bite the same. I thought hmm, maybe 3 bites a charm. Nope. The third bite, a mouth full of cabbage. I cut the eggroll open to see nothing but cabbage. Perhaps they misunderstood my order? I ordered chicken eggrolls, not vegetarian ones. These eggrolls were horrible! I threw them in the trash. What a waste of $6. for two eggrolls. They were tasteless and filled with cabbage. Their menu is extensive, offering apps, soup, fried rice, lo mein, chow mein, chop suey, chow mei fun, egg foo young, curry dishes, garlic sauce dishes, broccoli dishes, Szechuan/Hunan dishes, sweet & sour dishes, house specialties, and lunch specials that are available everyday besides Sunday. I had heard that this place is the go-to for egg rolls, so we decided to check them out on a weekend; we ordered: +a Pork Roll - rather than the use of ground pork, there were actually char siu-like chunks of pork throughout; there could have been more meat, as it was more cabbage heavy +a Shrimp Roll - had whole deveined shrimp throughout the egg roll (about 2 or so?) +a Steak Cheese Roll - definitely tasted like a steak and cheese sub, but in an egg roll form, with an addition of shredded cabbage +Shrimp Fried Rice - there is a small and a large size available, in which I opted for the small; the fried rice slightly has a sweet taste to it; it had generous amounts of deveined shrimp, which was great! I don't know if the woman really doesn't understand English, or just pretends to when she doesn't want to speak with you, but I suspect the latter. Anyway. I've ordered food from them that came with MOLD on the vegetables THREE different times! I just ordered a vegetable fried rice, ($9, which is waayyyy too much for this kind of place) and it was 90% dark, crunchy, horribly burnt rice, 5% moldy old mushrooms and pea pods with gray/black spots all over them, and 5% palatable veg (although some of it was also burnt.) I've tried a bunch of things from here and really the only thing I can recommended wholeheartedly is their Singapore noodles, and also their Triple Delight is pretty good.
