I attempted to contact them regarding possible pony rides and/or visit for my 2 year old grandson. They never got back to me .... Not a problem if you don't have the facilities to accommodate a request but please have the decency to respond to the request. Poor customer service and communication skills. Granted, I've only gone once, so take my review with a grain of salt. I'll be sure to update when I go back in the future. I had ridden previously at a different barn and left for various reasons. After a 3 year hiatus, I am now financially able to ride again. I had an introductory lesson with Kirsten this morning and it was awesome! Kirsten was super kind and helpful, and really understood where I am coming from as an adult who just wants to primarily learn how to ride effectively, not how to ride "pretty." The mare they selected for me, Whitney, was your average, testy, schoolmare but was so lovely once you got her moving. I also got to spend a few moments untacking her and she seemed so wonderful. As for the facility, I only went to the North campus, obviously. It is gorgeous! It was raining this morning so I couldn't see much of the outdoor facility, but it looked like it had sprawling fields and good turn out pastures for the lesson horses. The arena was large and able to maintain a group lesson while I had my lesson in a section of it and it did not seem too cumbersome. The stables were well kept, stalls had shaving (not straw! yay!) and the horses seemed comfortable. Overall, super enjoyable experience and, if I can fit my schedule to their requirements, I will definitely come back. Well worth the 50 minute long car ride from south Brooklyn. read more

I went here a couple times for introductory lessons and my experiences were ok. Rachel, my first instructor, was super lovely, patient, and encouraging, but I wish I could say the same about the second instructor, Ilana, who did nothing but bark and yell at me for not being able to continuously trot the horse around the arena. As a first time English rider, her remarks were a little disparaging and I haven't returned since. I am sure this is a great place and institution, though, to train and ride. I just happened to have an experience marred by an impatient instructor. read more

I'm rating two stars not for the horseback riding lessons, which I didn't even got a chance to try ...but because after calling several times, leaving 2 messages, writing them a message in their website and visiting the place and talking with one of the trainers or owner ... I had so much fun riding! I can't wait to ride more :) I loved the horse they put me on and I loved my instructor. They staff is super professional! I had a great lesson. I rode for years but then as a young adult i didnt have time with work etc! I Finally decided to get back in the saddle! Had a great time and felt super encouraged and not ashamed as an adult rider! I really love Twin Lakes Farm. Unlike a number of other stables where I have ridden, the instructors and the other staff are helpful, rather than snooty. Since I started riding at Twin Lakes Farm, I have gotten hooked on riding. I like challenging instructors, and Twin Lakes Farm has them. They challenge you to do your best and to become more physically fit. When you are trying to learn anything, you should always want teachers who challenge you. I love the interaction with wonderful living creatures that riding at Twin Lakes Farm gives me. The more I ride at Twin Lakes Farm, the more I want to ride again. This is probably among the best facilities where I've ever ridden and just a 1/2 hour ride from NYC on the Metro North then a short cab ride to the campus. It is well managed; the horses are well cared for and well trained; and the staff is amazing. The teachers are extremely well qualified and very safety conscious as well as mindful about riders' individual needs and goals. It's a beautiful setting as well. A great place for adults to learn or improve their riding skills. If there was one area of improvement it would be to put ceiling fans in the riding arena. Whew! It gets hot in there. read more

It's important that you read my full review if you are considering TLF. Our experience at TLF was, at first, fine. Although our first impression was that it was a training mill. Very impersonal. Maybe that's fine... just not what we experienced in the past. My daughter arrived at the barn with 3-4 years of experience. We loved the fact that there was an indoor arena which allowed for all weather riding. The coaches were mostly fine although I will say that one was, I thought, particularly harsh on the kids. Soon after my daughter began riding there, they built another arena which was covered with screens on the sides. It was nice, but my daughter felt that shadows behind the screens spooked the horses and therefore she became less comfortable riding. Our last experience there is why I would NEVER allow my kids to ride there again or recommend to anyone. My daughter fell off the horse when he stopped short (we felt due to being spooked), and while it was not a dramatic event, as she lost her footing and slipped off the side and down the front of the horse, it was clear that she was hurt. I brought her over to the bench where we sat for a few minutes. Someone came over and asked if she was ok. When I told them I didn't know, but didn't think so, I was told that they would be back with ice. We sat there for at least 10 -15 minutes and no one ever came back. My daughters wrist was broken. Later when I remembered that I had credit with them from purchasing a ticket book and realized that no one ever called to check in on her, I tried to call. No one ever answers the phone so I had to leave messages. In my first message I just stated that we needed a refund because she wasn't riding there anymore. No one called me back to find out why. In my second message I left a little more detail... My daughters wrist was broken and that we felt that shadows were creating a problem. No one called. In my final message I laid it all out there and told them how awful it was that no one had returned my call regarding my refund, but more importantly that NO ONE EVER checked to see that my daughter was ok. Not while we were still in the stable. Not within the few days after. Not even after any of my messages. I NEVER heard from ANYONE! I eventually just received a check in the mail. You may never have an issue. It might be a good fit for you. They are after all the cheapest in the area. Just know that you get what you pay for... read more

I've been riding at Twin Lakes for nearly two years, and those two years have been rough. Yes, I've learned quite a bit, but I've had some instructors from hell. One screamed at my mom for talking to another parent during a lesson, and the other made me jump the same crossrail over and over again for an entire year. I feel like they won't let me progress. Another issue is the horses. Most of the horses I am given to ride are over 30, and deserve to be retired. They are slow-moving and tired. Yet, not all the horses are like that. They have many ponies who jump flawlessly and are wonderful, yet I'm 5'6'' and far too big for them. So therefore, I'm put on all the extremely old and exhausted large horses. One threw me over three jumps at a show because he was too old to jump! He was 35! Poor horse! Yes, I have learned quite a bit for hunt seat. I have learned how to handle sluggish, old, or frisky horses. Sure, I've been only allowed to jump one crossrail over and over again by a teacher who seems to hate children (there are nice teachers, though). Oh, and another thing, you're not allowed to tack or groom your own horse unless you get a barn pass, which is hidden from you. They don't seem to want to let you get a barn pass, because it leaves them at a financial risk. After an ENTIRE YEAR of asking about the barn pass, I finally had a test. When I finally got it, I was only allowed to lead my horse in and out of it's stall, leaving it there still with it's tack on, sweaty and hot from a long lesson. So I had to sneak in to the barn and put the horse's tack away (the tack is not labeled, either) and groom this tired horse! Sure, they want to keep the horses safe, but seriously people. Learning about horse care is an incredibly important part of horsemanship! There were times I wanted to quit riding, but then I tried some other places and realized that although Twin Lakes has problems, they're the best you can find near the city. read more

Like the other 3 reviews here, my experience at Twin Lakes was a negative one. I had always wanted to ride since childhood but my first opportunity to do so didn't come until my mid-twenties, when I was able to take a few private introductory lessons there. My first instructor was not remotely friendly or encouraging to me as a beginner. She was very impatient,never once smiled or looked at me throughout the lesson and all her feedback was negative. Like another reviewer said of one of their instructors, all she did was berate me for not being able to post and trot properly right off the bat. I was putting in a lot of effort but was having a hard time getting the hang of it because of lack of experience and limited strength and physical stamina, yet the instructor just made disparaging remarks to me and acted like I was messing up on purpose. She even at one point threatened to "make me" do something more difficult if I didn't get the posting and trotting right. That's hardly the way to treat anyone taking a lesson in something like this, especially a newcomer. Since she was about the same age as me at the time, I made some feeble attempts at small talk with her about horses, riding, and the like but was responded to in a very dismissive manner. All the information I got out of her was that she had been riding since she'd been a young child. It could have been that her years of experience and exposure from a young age had meant losing sight of the fact that a newcomer shouldn't be expected to immediately get the hang of something that was probably second nature to her, not an attitude one would want someone teaching them anything brand new to have. I went back once more, requesting a different instructor, but that instructor, an older woman, was just as negative, rude, and disparaging, so I decided to stop going before letting my long-time love of horses be completely marred by my experiences at one place. I wondered if it was just me but it sounds like a few people have had less than stellar experiences with Twin Lakes. The review in which someone mentioned their daughter's fall and broken wrist and the place's appalling lack of responsiveness to the incident raises the biggest red flag of all in my opinion. read more
