The service at this place is horrible. Employees make nasty and disrespectful remarks to customers. Even spreading misinformation about fishing regulations in the area. Hiked a fishing guide for the Mammoth area for a half day. Our guide was knowledgeable of the area and brought everything we needed. We only needed to get fishing licenses. We set up our game plan and followed the guide in our car. They knew the area well and helped secured a handful of fish. We caught and release everything. They even had history of the area. Initially felt the price was a little steep but they took care of everything and the experience was top notch. Overall, would use the guide services again. read more

This Summer in August we decided we wanted to learn to fly fish. Since neither of us hadn't fished in years and neither of us had fly-fished we decided to learn the right way. We got to the store and we're greeted by friendly staff to help us locate our fly fisherman Cameron. He took us around the store to explain the reels,the lines and their differences and of course the flies. I had NO idea there was so much involved! Cameron took us the the local park to teach us the different and proper casts and could practice before going to the Owen's River. We were both so impressed with the skill it required and the knowledge Cameron had, watching and identifying corrections to help us learn the right way. Once outfitted with waders and boots we were on our way to fish. Even with the casting knowledge we found it was much harder in real life- the fish give you a half second to "set" before they realize it's a fake fly and spit it out! While we only caught a couple small trout and released them, I have a whole new respect for the craft of fly fishing. Thank you Cameron and the Fly Fishing and Trout Fitters for an exceptional first time experience. Worth every penny, we will be back next summer! read more

I purchased a pack-it Eagle Claw PK56TS Fishing rod on 7/18/24. I used the pole fishing on 7/19 & 7/21, the pole broke when fishing. I brought the fishing pole back to the store and the Owner told me this fishing pole is a final purchase and said it is very common for these fishing poles to break. I was very disappointed. This is the first fishing pole that has ever broke on me in the last 50 years of fishing. The Store owner said he could only sale me another fishing pole at 50% off. That was all he could do since I had used the fishing pole. I am very disappointed in the service that I had received from the Owner of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter. I had decided to contact the manufacturer about the fishing pole I just purchased and used 2 times and it broke when I was fishing. The manufacturer Eagle Claw Fishing Tackle stood by there product and the replacement rod is on its way. read more

The best place to get flies, advice, general fishing gear, and fly fishing lessons. Came in to check out the store and we were warmly greeted. Was able to pick up some great flies from their huge selection. Additionally my wife and I signed up for beginner fly fishing lessons which we were able to take the next day. We met up with our guide Giancarlo the next morning who took us out to a nearby site where we learned a variety of casting techniques. Then it was on to the river where he guided us to some great spots. I hooked up multiple times and was able to land 3 trout (both brown and rainbows) with Giancarlo's guidance. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to learn the right way to fly fish and to gain valuable insights. read more

On my recurring quest for a refrigerator magnet on our recent trip to Mammoth, I was thwarted not once, but twice (the second being Rite Aid, that unbelievably doesn't carry tourist magnets) before finding Troutfitter. I took a 5hr beginners lesson and the time just flew by. Dave tried to show me many different tricks and made it so easy for me to follow. Caught a fish on my first cast! Dave also explained how to handle the fish to make sure they will survive when released. Experience was definately worth the time and $ spent. On our recent trip to Mammoth, we actually had a pretty positive experience at the shop. Based on other reviews that I have read on yelp, I think maybe that makes me an "old guy." That being said, we needed some chironomid patterns to fish Crowley... And this shop had exactly what we needed. truth be told, it's proximity to the gas station - where we had stopped for coffee and gasoline - made this an easy stop as well. I enjoy talking fishing as much as the next guy, but really, I wasn't in there for a conversation. A little local know how it is never a bad thing, and hopes that I willing to share with customers is also a bonus. I found the staff to be cordial but not gushing and overbearing. Maybe it was the float tubes and fly rods sticking out of the back of my truck in the parking lot, but they didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need or ask for. Based on other reviews, it sounds like there are some other options in town for purchasing trout fishing gear. You need to find a store that works best for you, based on your ability and needs for service and support. It sounds like some folks like to stand around tackle shops talking fishing. I prefer to maximize my time on the water. The Troutfitter facilitated that, and I'm happy. read more

Planning on a trip to fish with a guide at Mammoth - first went to another more popular guide Nathan W. and he said he was booked but would be glad to refer me to another guide. So another guide answers: Eric "Otis" Hein from Troutfitters sent a strange looking email (message contained within another attachment) from a VZW account. Looked like it was an ancient cell phone SMS message. That was the first sign. Next, he was brief and said he can guide us on the waters for fish. Then I replied with our level of experience (novice), single hander and double hander gear, and our dislike for the narrow Owens river. On a side note: we had a negative experience with Orvis Pasadena when they took us with a guide to fish the Owens in the summer the year before and it was awful. We prefer the lakes. So the reply I got from Eric Otis Hein was "I'm sorry but seeing your parameters I really can't think of any waters in our area that would interest you so I respectfully will pass on the guide trip." Well I guess we aren't the fly fishing type are we ? Is this snooty attitude that represents the entire shop ? I don't know .... I was planning on stopping by the shop for flies that would work in the Mammoth area but now I am driving past it. I will get my flies and reputable guide service from someone else! read more

Came to the shop to get fishing licenses for our family, tackle and bait. We've been coming to Mammoth for years and always stop here to load up on our gear before heading to the lake, spending a couple hundred bucks, and have always had a good experience. This time, the two young guys working were extremely rude and unhelpful. Barely talked to us, acted like we were putting them out when having to get our license, and any questions asked about fishing spots or tackle to use for certain areas was rudely short answered with an attitude. I understand that they probably get sick of the same questions from tourists, but felt like the attitude and poor customer service was unnecessary. We will not be going back. read more

Disappointed to give this rating, as 6-8 years ago, I had a great experience with a guide from here. However, walked in yesterday with another lady, and in spite of there being 2 guys in the store, and only one other customer - an older gentleman chatting and picking out a few things, maybe. No one bothered to even look up/over, say 'hello', or ever ask if we needed anything! We did look through the whole store, so there was plenty of time, and for sure, some nice inventory. Well, I had a few hundred $$ in my pocket for a new float tube....so sale missed, I'll get it elsewhere. Bummed, because I expected a decent experience based on history, but...nope. I'd never been to Troutfitter before, but I called yesterday from LA to get some ideas on quality fishing holes in/around the Mammoth Lakes area. Spoke with Tyler who took his time and went above/beyond. Asked plenty of questions and gave me some great, out of the way, lakes to go spend some quality time with my 16 year-old son on Saturday.
