We stumbled upon this cute rustic distillery when we were in the area with friends and it was such a great find! Twin Stills is a family owned business with a cool history of how they got started. Their whiskey comes from an old Portuguese tradition of single small batch distillation. They have moonshine tastings, three for $9.00. Pick your flavors and enjoy! My favorite was the Apple Pie Moonshine, which we bought a couple bottles of. They also have a few whiskey's, vodka and brandy as well and if you want a full drink they have cocktails and beers too. Really a very cool spot on Long Island to have some quality moonshine. When we were there, a food truck was also parked out front, so on a nice day you can pull up a chair outside, grab some food and enjoy the best moonshine in the area, and some great customer service. No friends, this isn't a review about something I whipped up in a bathtub during the prohibition. Nay, instead we're talking about some legitimate moonshine (and mixed drinks) from Twin Stills located out east on the North Fork of Long Island. My wife and her family finally swung by this spot back at the beginning of the summer as we tasted up some delightful libations. Now truth be told, I had already sampled several moonshine flavors made at Twin Stills as you can often find them selling bottles of their o'OldTymer alcohol at farmers markets and places like Total Wine. And I've passed the actual storefront a ton of times while heading out east, but never once did I stop in (until now). I mean, it's honestly nothing special, the interior of Twin Stills. You have a tiny bar of a few seats and walls with their various moonshine flavors available. Outside you'll find a handful of tables so on warmer/nicer days you'll be able to sit and sip your moonshine which is what we did. Well it was almost only me who partook in their offerings as I was most intrigued by the fruity flavor options they had. Apple Pie is the best, but one I've tried prior, so I decided to do a "flight" of moonshine with other flavor options. I went with raspberry, mixed berry, and coffee as my three choices. Oh and I put flight in quotations because with moonshine, your samples are itty bitty. The price isn't horrible though at $9 for the trio. I'd also say that none of the flavors were horrible either, though coffee might've been a bit too strong and mixed berry didn't taste like anything specific. Raspberry, on the other hand, was outstanding. I wanted a bottle of that, but there was one other flavor I wanted to sample before my purchase (well I would've liked to have tried chocolate but it was sold out). The lady behind the bar gave me a free fourth taste of blueberry moonshine which was almost as delicious as the raspberry. In the end, it couldn't beat out that raspy winner, and so a bottle of raspberry was bought. Backtracking for a sec, I did mention I was almost the only one to drink at Twin Stills, but I can't forget to mention my wife's cocolada drink. This was a mixture of muddled fruit, a moonshine flavor, and coconut cream. She ordered a raspberry option (because it was the best flavor, of course) and boy was it a tasty mixture. I'd definitely want to try to copy that simple recipe at home and make my own. Yum. Overall, Twin Stills Moonshine is a lovely little Long Island spot with quality alcoholic concoctions. Perhaps a few moonshine flavors miss the mark, but most are delightful and worthy of drinking on their own, over some ice, or just grab that coconut cream and start the party. My boyfriend and I were in the area and decided to stop in. We've had their moonshine before and we have been wanting more. When we went in we saw some new (to us) flavors. Raspberry, maple pecan, spicy apple pie and chocolate. We've only ever had apple pie and coffee flavors. We decided on a 3 sample tasting pour. They are very small, but just enough for a taste. We tasted maple pecan, raspberry and chocolate. They were all quite good. We ended up sticking with our favorites and purchased apple pie and coffee moonshine. Love this place! Came by on the bike with the hubby. I pass by here all the time and always wanted to try it out. It's easy to pass by this place because it's small compared to all the farms. You walk in and order straight away. The bartender was awesome. We told her it was our first time there and she recommended some drinks and flights. She was friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable and definitely made our experience a great one. Outside, there is ample seating and games. Jenga, cornhole and hacky sack. We had a couple drinks each. We first ordered a flight of three different varieties each. Since there were three of us we got to sample nine varieties. We purchased several bottles and highly recommend this place. Tiny little place, tiny little terra cotta cups, great flavor! We came here as the (gulp) FIRST stop on a brewery tour of the North Fork, and were very pleased. The bar room itself is just one room, with a short bar and a bunch of knick knacks everywhere. We tasted most of the flavors, and they were all great! My favorites were the warm apple pie (different from the regular apple pie, which is also good), and the reserve, which tasted like a great aged whisky. They have a few games outside, like corn hole and giant connect 4. The bartender the day we were there was very kind, willing to chat with us about the different styles, and take a photo for us. read more

The North Fork of LI is synonymous with "The Wine Trail." Well, let me tell you, we've visited over two dozen vineyards and have had the absolutely best time at Twin Stills on more than one occasion. Most recently, we stopped here as the last place on my birthday tour and stumbled upon an afternoon session of karaoke. We sang our hearts out to say the least while sipping some phenomenal moonshine cocktails. Whenever we bring someone new, they always buy a bottle of moonshine (usually apple pie) to take home because it is that delicious. Do not, I repeat, do not drive right by. What a fun place to drink a rainy afternoon away! We almost decided not to go, but a few people were insistent. It was POURING out but this small place was packed. They had an outdoor covered area which helped. They also a band playing some old 70's rock which was AWESOME. Happened to pass Twin Stills Moonshine on our way home from Greenport and had to stop in. How can you not when it stands out among all of the wineries? We noticed that there was plenty of outdoor space for warmer weather and were pleasantly surprised by the bright, clean interior of the tasting room. Everyone was super friendly as we sat down at the bar and took care to explain to us about the moonshine, how they serve it (in little clay cups from Portugal) and give us a drink card to use at home to make drinks from the various moonshines. We then talked to who we found out was the owner and when I asked how long they had been open he said 1 day! They had their grand opening the day before and had experienced their first slow period since that party. All of the moonshine is made by them and the business is a family affair. We did a flight of moonshine - you get to pick from their menu the flavors you want to taste and each one was better than the other. We wound up going home with a bottle of the Strawberry and a bottle of the Apple Pie. I only see good things for Twin Stills since they not only serve their own moonshine as tastings and in mixed drinks but they also have local craft beer on tap. SMART MOVE. Heading out east and expecting a day of wine tasting, I was very surprised when my traveling party suggested that we stop over at Twin Stills Moonshine. Admittedly, the place is small and easy to miss, but it is a place that should not be passed over. The quality here is superb, and the combination of ambiance and service makes you feel like you're at a backyard gathering with some old friends and family. Did I mention the moonshine is superb? Walking in, the first thing you'll probably notice is how small this venue really is, which should come as no surprise since this family-owned shop opened its doors only within the last year (from what I could find in doing my research). The owners, Joe and Patty, make you feel like welcomed guests the moment you walk passed the cornhole sets and onto the porch. Although I was still on the north fork of Long Island, I suddenly felt transported to the deep south (minus the thick accents). Spending about an hour in this venue, we were mostly being helped by Emily, who was one of the greatest bartenders I've ever encountered - efficient, accommodating, knowledgeable, conversational and incredibly sweet. Patty and Joe were likewise gracious, speaking to every guest with a smile and doing everything possible to provide quality service. Overall, the whole team makes you feel like family, and the small bar gives this place a really intimate feeling. I also particularly enjoyed the clever signage and kitschy decor around the shop. In addition, there was live music playing when we were there (Saturday afternoon), giving the place a terrifically lively atmosphere. How's the moonshine? Superb (you probably know that by now, though). The two drinks that I sampled - Southern Sunrise and Frickin Lickin Good Tea - were both excellent. As a fan of strawberries, Southern Sunrise was delicious, although I will admit that the strawberry flavor was a bit strong. The Frickin Lickin Good Tea, though? Frickin Lickin Delicious! Take some old-fashioned southern-style sweet tea and mix it with some honey moonshine and lemon flavor and you get this drink. I would come back for this drink alone! And Emily made it perfectly, taking our tastes and preferences into consideration when mixing it. For those looking to take some moonshine home, there is of course a variety of bottled options you can take to go. Although I did not purchase any on this trip, I'm considering coming back for some on a future trip. The bottom line is to make sure you stop here! Thanks to a write-up in The NorthForker Wine Press, Twin Stills was our target destination this Sunday. We have driven by this place a million times. (OK, maybe not a million but every time we come out East. Which is plenty). It always looks closed. But today there were actual cars in the lot and lots of bright flags and signs beckoning you in for some early afternoon liver-abuse. It's a small, squat, stand alone building with some patio tables on the front porch. Around the side there are additional seating arrangements and it looks like they have the ability to open up an outdoor bar for, I assume, special events or if they get really jammed. On the front door is a big hand-written sign that reads, "NO DOGS ALLOWED INSIDE". No biggie but it kinda rubs me the wrong way as 1) a responsible dog owner should know you CAN'T bring your dogs inside and 2) you would think that the staff would be able to mitigate the entrance of an invading pooch in a more personable manner. Again, not a BIG deal but it kinda kills your buzz (before you even start it) by having "NO!" greet you right off the bat. Apparently, signage is important but more on that in a bit. The inside is cozy. A bar that seats maybe 8-10 is the main feature. Wood paneling and bottles of their various moonshine flavors abound. Perhaps realizing that people can't sit around and pound moonshine all day long, they offer modest wine options and 4 local craft beers. They also offer tasting flights of the craft. Tasting flight for the moonshine is $9 for 3 TEENY shots. The lady working the bar (who I think is the co-owner) explained that it amounted to about a shot and a half. $3 for a 1 oz pour seems a little steep but I don't know what goes into making this so maybe it's reasonable? (A good comparison would be to see what LiV charges for a tasting flight.) Whatever. We were willing to pay that and, when you're out East, you've gotta be a baller,right? Opted for the Honey, Apple Pie and Coffee. The honey was sticky sweet (it's HONEY! DUH!) and reminded me more of mead though not as smooth. More medicinal in nature. The Apple Pie was tasty and was just as good, if not better, than the commercially available Applie Pie "moonshine". The coffee was a bit too harsh. Super strong nose and dark, rough, acidic, burney coffee. I asked if they got it locally which, I thought, was a polite thing to do. You know, you're intrigued by the product so you want to know more and give the creators a chance to tell tales of their artisinal prowess. At this question, the lady visibly stiffened and, though remaining friendly, simply stated that they don't reveal that info. OK. My bad. So, simply trying to keep the convo going I asked if it was whole bean or if they grinded the coffee at which she kinda stiffened again and joking referred to a sign (that sign thing again!) that read "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." This is VERY weird for me. being of the craft beer culture, everyone is very open and collaborative. often, you ask a brewer what kind of hops he used and he will not only tell you which hops he used but will launch into a 10 minute diatribe about the Alpha acids, when he pitched them, where he got them and why they're better than a different hop option. Ask a brewer about his yeast and, even if it's a proprietary house strain, he'll tell you which types he blended. I get that you don't want to give away the recipe to your secret sauce but does it LOOK like I'm taking notes? Does it LOOK like I'm going to open my own distillery and try to compete? I dunno. Kinda odd. I mean, she was very friendly and the vibe was nice and all but I almost feel like we were asking Willy Wonka for the recipe to he Everlasting Gobstopper. Sorry, I've gone on too long I think on something that's probably not pertinent to the 'Shine but was something that I noticed and thought was worth mentioning. Buddanyway... Like LiV, it's early on the North Fork wine trail. Stop in for a snort. Their cocktail selection looks decent and we'll look forward to trying those next time. We went home with a bottle because, even though there are commercial options available at the neighborhood liquor store, it's nice to support a local business that also gets its ingredients (it can be assumed) locally as well. read more

I admit, we almost bailed on this place because it was taken up by a bachelorette party and a man singing karaoke when we arrived. Luckily for us, our timing was fairly perfect and they cleared out quickly. We stayed to try a flight (6 tastes for $9, not a bad price!), and my wife and I split the flight. We tried the honey - smooth and sweet and very nice. We left with a bottle! It will be amazing with iced tea in the summer. We also tried: raspberry (sweet but too syrupy for me) Coffee (HEAVY coffee flavor; if you try it, try it last) Apple (really good and if I didn't have a different local moonshine place by my home in NJ that I recently bought a bottle from, I would have bought theirs) Their aged moonshine: I'm sure it would be very good for a different palate, but wasn't my thing. And lastly the maple pecan: it has a very strong and very sweet flavor; if you like maple, go for it. I think it might be good in a cup of coffee! I remember drinking illegal homemade shine in South Georgia. Now it's legal and flavored! 3 half shot pours for 9 bucks. The Apple at 50 proof was sweet. We bought a bottle for 20 bucks and drank it over Ice to dilute the sweetness. Honey flavored at 80 proof and a new pumpkin spice at 50 proof. Ok nothing great... The fact they charge you $9 for three tiny tastings is a big rip off. If they let me put the $9 towards a purchase of one of the samples for another $11 I would have bought a $20 bottle. Just not worth the price. Whenever I go out east with my friends we HAVE to stop here. It's a cute little place that you would totally miss if you drive by it. Whenever I bring people there I feel like I'm sharing a secret. The people that work there are always super friendly, they describe the flavors, tell you how to mix the moonshine with other things and make great cocktails. The moonshine is very tasty, if you're a lightweight though I'd suggest not driving because it sneaks up on you. My favorite flavors are the Apple Pie, Strawberry, Chocolate & Berry. Blink and you'll miss this distillery tucked away amongst the barns and dirt roads in the country of Long Island. It's apparently a little new in the area, but this small little house still pumps out some great moonshine to put a little pep in your walk. There was a 2 piece band playing inside, alongside a small bar with a menu listing of their shines pouring that day. Tasting flights come with 3 versions that you get to choose. I went with apple pie, honey, and straight. Most are around 80 proof, but straight is a strong MFer at 100 proof. The highlight by far was apple pie. The smell was incredible. If it didn't have a hint of burning upon the taste, you would think it was straight up essence of apple pie. And even though I do have a lot of chest hair, the straight moonshine might've been a little much for me. We hit the Vineyards yesterday and I had seen Twin Stills Moonshine online and included it in our 'doings.' It was the BEST part of the day! The owner was so kind - he let us try all sorts of delicious flavors of his corn whiskey and moonshine including Grappa. I had friends visiting from Italy and he made them feel so welcome. We were pretty much the only ones there and were able to really get into the whole tasting experience. I cannot emphasize enough how nice the owner was, how welcome we were made to feel and how DELICIOUS the products were! I brought home 5 bottles of different varieties.
