I wanted to do something fun for date night and remembered I saw on Groupon a floating experience. (Side note, the business will match your Groupon price so you don't have to buy it through Groupon if you prefer to just purchase it at the shop.) my boyfriend was also experiencing some issues with his hip and says that this would really help! We decided on the "date float" where 2 people are inside a pod. The lid available to us was about the side of a full mattress. When you enter the room, you see the pod, a bench, a couple of changing areas and a shower stall. There's a lock on the door so you can keep your personal belongings safe. You're allowed 10 mins to rinse off and then get into the pod. We saw something floating in the water and I'm not sure what it was it it grossed me out. Maybe it was lint, but it's not comfortable to see when you're about to get naked and go inside. As soon as the capsule closed, I felt very trapped and suddenly claustrophobic. It also didn't help that the "full mattress" area didn't seem like enough room for the two of us to float comfortably without touching each other or slashing one another. I've never done this before, but I thought the keys would come on while I'm floating. So it also scared me thinking it was going to blast at me any minute. I lasted maybe 3 minutes before getting out and rinsing off. It also didn't help that I saw another couple pay for their services before we entered probably the same room and the same pod. I understand their run the jets to clean it, but just the thought of another couple being in the same pod in the same water made me feel icky. My boyfriend enjoyed it and it helped his hip. He also enjoyed that he had the big space to himself lol. Definitely not something I can do again, but If you're comfortable being in a closed space, and recycled water, your experience will be much better.

After learning about Encompass (and looking to their classes a lot), I signed up to do a 21 day…read morechallenge for $21. Based on scheduling, it took me 5 days to finally make it in. Encompass is a cute, definitely wellness based studio right behind Title Boxing. The first class I attended was their Slow Flow Yoga and Sound Bath Meditation. Me, not being a huge fan of yoga unless it's hot or restore, figured this was the perfect class to start with - especially with the addition of the crystal bowls! The class was in the dark with candles and salt lamps. It started with a meditation, moved into slow flow yoga and stretching, and ended cuddled up listening and feeling the sound bath. It was very hearing and olfactory based 45 minutes. At the beginning of class, she gave us drops of essential oils into our hands to smell (they smelled amazing, and I ended up rubbing some into my neck). Throughout class she sprayed scent into the air, and burned incense. She had a chime she played sporadically and the crystal bowls at the end of class, sang and vibrated the body. It was a very unique experience and class, and it was very enjoyable. I felt very relaxed by the end of it. The studio is very cute, and well equipped. They have a ton of weights, mats, bolsters, blocks, straps and other yoga props. On top of the studio, they also have a sauna in the back - the perfect cherry after a wellness class. They do have to compete with Title next door, so at times you can hear the music and instructor on speaker from there. Because of this, the music in Encompass is turned up a little louder, which was just fine by me, but I couldn't hear the instructor very well a few times. I really enjoyed Encompass, and I'll for sure be coming in as much as I can in the next 16 days, but their schedule is a little harder for me to work into my day. Classes are more spaced out and sporadic throughout the day, and if I want to attend a class, I have to plan my entire day better. Their classes definitely have a more wellness-vibe; the majority are yoga based. It's well worth a stop in for some awesome yoga, or relaxation classes. (They do have a few cardio ones as well!)

I'd been considering yoga for some time, taking classes through SLCC over the last few years but it…read morewas time to move on to a studio. I just wanted something simple where I can focus on my mental health while reintroducing movement into my daily routine. Something that reminded me of Berkeley without being too Berkeley about it. Encompass really embodies that for me. I'm still trying out classes and looking for the perfect class fit in terms of time and my own schedule but I found the instructors and the other patrons to be friendly, kind, and supportive. It really is a warm and welcoming place, and I think that was the intention from the start. Adaptions are made as needed to poses, support is always offered and they really do feel like they believe that it's your practice, and that you should have the most say on what your body does. I'm not a physical person, I'm not really big on it but honestly, I feel like this was a good fit for me. I think the prices are reasonable but they aren't the cheapest option. However, small classes make it worth the price. The classes offered are at a variety of different times during the week and that does make it easier to find at least one or two classes that you can take the time for. There are a good mix between yoga and cardio classes with meditation sprinkled through out. I really feel like when it comes to yoga studios, you may need to try a few out before you find the one that works for you. But this one was a fit for me right off the bat.

I am now 3 1/2 years clean thanks to that very Clinic she was trying to pry me away from, anyways she tried to get me to leave and go to her for everything only to DROP all her patients and go to seventh Street. She knows nothing about addiction. She even openly talked about the owners of the clinic she was working for to me completely disrespectful to the people who were writing her checks. I am not here to slander or be rude just being honest because if you suffer from addiction you're going to want someone you can trust, someone you know is going have your back throughout your Journey, someone who genuinely cares about you and this woman will not she's in it for the check and has no idea how to navigate someone through addiction. I understand everyone needs to make a living, but you should just be treating people better than that especially people suffering from addiction/anxiety. she needs to go back to med school or get some type of training when it comes to addiction treatment.

I did a little research online and found that they are open to visitors, so I joined for the 10:00 Sunday meeting/gathering. Immediately, I felt welcome and at home. They say "come as you are" and I believe they truly mean it. I did not feel any judgement or that I needed to defend my presence, just openness and welcome. For those that have never been to a service, I'll explain a bit about how it went down when I visited-keeping in mind that I'm certainly no expert, just sharing my observations. Upon entering the space, everyone leaves their shoes at the door. People were in socks or bare feet-I think it's a personal preference. Inside the sanctuary, there are cushions on the floor as well as some chairs toward the back and along the walls. At every seat, there was a booklet with the prayers and affirmations-this comes in handy when it's time to join in. When it's time to begin, there are chimes and the Sensei, I believe he's called, walks in slowly, ritually, followed by another person. I don't know what her role is, although she lit a candle, they bowed to each other and the rest of the participants before she took her seat. There's a lot of bowing that follows. Visitors were welcomed and then a brief explanation of the service was given, which I appreciated greatly. We opened with a few minutes of "deep listening" where anyone was invited to share some thoughts. Several folks shared challenges they are facing or things that had been weighing on their minds. The vulnerability and love was strong; everyone was very respectful of each other. Following the deep listening exercise, everyone read from the booklet of prayers, chants and affirmations. It was beautiful and encouraged a sense of oneness with each other. Nobody was better than another, everyone was equal and whole-even including the leader, who was sitting on the floor with everyone else. Very symbolic. The final piece was the message from the Sensei-which was less formal and slightly interactive. I appreciated how he shared his experiences and perspectives and invited everyone to consider their own perspective. He did not state that his was the only right way, but instead that every person is responsible to find the path that works for them. And we will all have different paths. So many of the things he said resonated with me and I loved it! I'm not sure if I'll commit to attending regularly, but I certainly will return. If you see me there, please come say hi.
