I wish I could say the bad experience ended when we walked out, but unfortunately, it got worse. Despite the place being completely empty, my husband, our three-year-old, and I were told we could not sit down to look at the menu. I'm visibly pregnant, and our child was hot and tired from the July heat. We simply needed a moment to rest while we decided what to order. The handwritten menu is, in my opinion, messy and difficult to read, so we needed a bit more time to look it over. We were immediately informed that waitress service doesn't start till 7:00pm and we were not permitted to sit. My husband stated that we were just reviewing the menu. The girl behind the counter said, "You can stand to look at the menu. You can sit when your food is ready". The tone used was dismissive, sarcastic, and dismissively rude, making the entire experience uncomfortable and hostile. It was inappropriate for anyone in customer service. I called twice later that day, but no one ever answered. Still, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and reached out to via Facebook to express my concerns. What I got in return was more of the same: a snide, sarcastic, and dismissive response that confirmed this is simply how they treat people. Found out it was cash only, no biggie, but I only had $10 cash and my ATM card, so my wife and I didn't get anything. I asked the girl behind the counter (who looked absolutely miserable that I interrupted her phone time) if we used the coupon, but wanted to add another scoop for my kid, what the charge would be, She said $5. For one scoop? I asked again because there was no way they charged $5 for one scoop and she said yes $5. It's as if they didn't want any business. No problem. I would give zero stars if I could. It's sad, really. I remember going here growing up and even two years ago. Today my family and ai went in and there were about 10 kids in there wrestling in the store and in the back. It was dark and hot. It smelled horrible. I've always loved this place for their waffles and ice cream, and make sure to make it part of any visit to the Jersey shore. But I have to say that this visit was a bit disappointing. I don't believe the waffle was made fresh. I didn't pay attention to what the girl was doing as I was talking to someone, but the waffle was not hot and was also undercooked. And there's usually the intoxicating aroma of fresh waffles cooking when you enter, and I did not smell anything. The waffle was buried under mounds of ice cream, and you can't go wrong with Breyers vanilla and mint chocolate chip. The half waffle serving is enormous, and delicious. But the waffle was not up to its usual delicious self, which was a major disappointment. The service was excellent, although odd. One of the things missing was the pretzels on the table. When I asked about them, the young girl said they were not allowed to put them out until after 6 PM. Really? What does time of day have to do with the serving of pretzels? Do I pay less money for ice cream before 6:00? (The answer is NO!) Why should something be served depending on the time of day I come in? And in all the many years I'm going there, that was a first! We did compliment the young girl on her service. I think anymore it's unusual to see a young person doing her job so well, not on the phone, and busy the whole time despite the fact that we were the only two people in there at that time of day. (Our timing was perfect!) I just don't know why the changes in waffles and pretzels This takes my usual 5 star rating for this place down to a 3. Went to Two Cents Plain on Memorial Day weekend with my husband and in-laws. The place gets crowded, quickly. However, it's cute on the inside - a fun atmosphere. The service is also responsive. Unfortunately, the ice cream left much to be desired. I ordered a peanut butter flavor and it was really bad. Tasted freezer burned. My husband got a waffle with ice cream on it, and the waffle was really mushy. I'm not sure what the fuss is about the ice cream, but it was pretty standard to me. Oh, and it's cash only. Um, I wanted an ice cream cone. Not a cup of soupy ice cream with a cone on top. I lay a $5 dollar bill on the counter She takes it and asks Did I say $4.75 No, you didn't say anything... we'll it's $5 and change but I'll just take this I guess Try air conditioning the place. I think my expectations were set too high when I went off to find Two Cents Plain. I was envisioning homemade ice cream, but it turned out to be Breyers. Don't get me wrong the quality and taste of Breyers is fine, but I had hoped to find something different than I would find at my local supermarket. You also order at the counter and sit yourself where you want. Although they do have glass dishes on display they serve you with disposable even when you stay within the store. We ordered a sundae and a waffle to eat in the Shoppe. The taste of both desserts were very good, but the presentation was lacking. The sundae was served in a plastic dish and the whipped cream did not go above the top of the cup. They may have different size sundaes, but nothing else was offered to me and in that case they should use a smaller dish to make the dish look full. The waffle was served on a paper plate and kind of looked like a pile of toppings. Compared to other places to get Ice Cream in Atlantic City they win hands down. I love it for a few different reasons... 1. I have been going to Two Cents Plain since they opened in the 1970s. I feel a sense of nostalgia about the place and that is what kept me going back. These days it has become a place resting on its laurels not on its value and quality. My most recent trip was mundane. The young women who work there look real tacky in their spandex clothing. They are not especially friendly and the floor around me was dirty, and the waffles and Breyer's "ice cream" were sub par. I really wondered if the ice cream was genuine ice cream because Breyer's which they serve now makes a "frozen dairy dessert" .. The signage is messed up and needs to be fixed. Sure they may still have the " Hello Lollie" sundae but i am no longer impressed with the place. It doe not give me goosebumps anymore. read more

They boast about their vegan menu, but when I walked in there the girl didn't know how to make any of the vegan products. She put it in a ponytail, then without washing her hands or using wax paper - grabbed an ice cream cone and proceeded to make my order. GROSS! My friend had exact same experience a few weeks ago - except when she pointed out to the girl she should use wax paper or use cones with wrapped paper - her answer was - "well that's how how we were trained". WRONG ANSWER. This place is so good and I'm sure if the owner knew he/she would change the policy and ensure the people behind the counter either 1) wear disposable gloves when handling cones or 2) use wax paper when holding cones or 3) put paper around base of cone. This is all fairly customary for ice cream parlors. If you goto 2 cents plain see if you observe what I'm taking about and leave comment for the owner. My 3 daughters and I were seated a table against a wall in the restaurant that was half empty. I asked to move to a table that suited our needs better. The waitress stated with an attitude that the tables were the same size and I replied that's true but if we are going to argue than she should understand that the table against the wall has half the space of seating we would be on top of each other. Asked for a medium vanilla soft serve in a cup with fudge and sprinkles and received a spoonful of ice cream drowned in a pint of fudge. Took 2 bites and the ice cream was gone and was left with a gross cup of fudge. When I politely asked why I was given such a large cup with such a little amount of ice cream, the worker then told me it was because I got fudge, in which I had to pay an extra dollar for so it should not have compensated for the lack of ice cream. A single girl waited on us for our orders one by one while 4 other workers sat behind the counter on their phones without acknowledging us. We ordered a waffle with ice cream as well and we were given a cold premade waffle that was sitting out on the counter instead of making a fresh one. We then sat outside to enjoy our expensive ice cream when what seemed to be the owner began taking in tables and chairs surrounding us and sat on a chair next to us and waited for us to leave. We felt uncomfortable and got up and the second we left she removed the table from under our feet, 3 hours before closing. After all of this, we watched from our outside seating as a worker sat on her knees and ate ice cream from behind the counter. It was evident that she wanted us to leave so we did. The owner is completely inappropriate and unappreciative of her customers for what is, no joke, literally Breyers ice cream. My friends and I showed up 15 minutes before closing time and the owner threw us out with no apologies on a June weekend. I mean, really? This will be the last time we patronize this store which doesn't even have the capability to make their own ice cream. Spent $12 on a waffle and ice cream with a few friends. The waffles are rather large and sharing one seemed very appropriate. The owner of the establishment (a short, brunette woman who walks around the shop with an obvious attitude) made it her mission to stop at our table often and harass us to hurry with our dessert. The entire experience was rather disturbing. The way she lifted my friend's arm off a chair behind us without excusing herself was the last straw. We left $13 on a $12.10 bill in all singles to prove a point. She counted it out in front of us and then sarcastically exclaimed "Wow, thank you!" I have gone to this ice cream parlor with my kids and now with my grand kids. Today, I went in with my sister who wanted ice cream. I asked if they could give me a drink of water (I wasn't having anything). They refused to give me a cup of water. They would sell me a bottle of water. I didn't have any money so I walked out. Obviously, I needed a drink of water. I cannot believed they refused a 70 year old woman a drink of water. If I can avoid it, I will never set foot in there again.
