And if your beach body is not exactly on point (a generous understatement in my case), you don't want to stuff yourself because it's going to make your gut protrude even more prominently? So you should probably just get a juice or a salad or something? Well, I go in the exact opposite direction. When I'm at the beach, I want all the barbecue, and all the fried things. The Fletcher's outpost at the Riis Park Beach Bazaar serves the same great smoked meats that you can grab in Gowanus (and at the new DeKalb Market Hall), and it's everything I ever wanted. Pulled pork or brisket sandwiches on squishy potato rolls, piled high with tender meat, slaw, and topped with a bit of sauce. Perfectly crispy waffle fries virtually covered in fatty brisket (because meat fries are better than just ordinary fries). And of course, ribs (my favorite food). All of it served to me by a nice dude wearing a Meats shirt that looks like a Mets shirt. I regret nothing, and neither will you. (Oh, and if you want, you can pre-order whole briskets or pork butts, and serve you and everyone you know delicious barbecue on the beach.)

We spent about $35 on food and subsequently asked them to fill our cups with water. They refused. They have a sink right in their kiosk, and they refused to give us tap water. I explained to one of the workers, who seemed like a manager, that my kids were thirsty and that we spent all our money in his establishment on sandwiches and waffle fries. He still wouldn't give us the water. I further explained that I walked to the water fountain on the boardwalk, and only an undrinkable dribble came out. He didn't care. He claimed it was "health code violation" to give me tap water. I noticed that there were several gallon bottles of open barbecue sauce on the counter. It was 80 degrees out. I saw workers pouring the same bbq sauce on meat sandwiches. Isn't that a health code violation, storing food products at 80 degrees? In my opinion, Fletcher's management doesn't care about its customers, especially children. Luckily for us, a worker from the fried clam stand adjacent to Fletcher's overheard what was happening. She gave us water from the clam stand's sink. Avoid Fletcher's. Mean people.
