I imagine they saw them as small and curious about the fruit "as is normal" and preferred to avoid having to deal with this. They showed very little empathy, denying children entry for no reason, to a program that is totally family-friendly and child-friendly. I recommend they be clear on their website and make it explicit that they only accept children of a certain age or older, or that the "pick your own" experience is restricted to adults.
